Appearance

Physically, Dread is a typical dragon of legend: large, scaled, with wicked talons and winged forelimbs. Long horns twist from the back of his head, and rows of sharp, narrow teeth point back along the inside of his jaw. Ember-colored eyes shimmer in a dark, coal-black hide that shades to brown along its underside. His entire body is thickly-scaled, providing a tough natural armor. Thin spines connected by membranes providing extra rudders for aerial control protrude along his back, chest, tail, neck and sides. These spines tend to erect, much like a bird's feathers or a mammal's hackles, when he's threatened or threatening, very curious, or otherwise alert. Dread at his full adult size is around twenty feet long excluding the tail, and around eight feet tall; he will always be lighter-weight than might be expected, with a massively broad wingspan, in order to manage true flight. As a result he finds navigating smaller tunnels to be irritating if not dangerous, and tends to settle himself in a single cave with plentiful prey and a decent place to den. At the moment, his den is a cave within, and nest atop, an island in Leo with no ground access, densely-packed with hoarded shiny objects and the bones of his prey.

His chest is deeply-keeled for flight stability, his abdomen tucked up. A sharp, pointed spade or spike sits along the top end of his tail, useful for slashing and whipping enemies--though the bottom is also quite sharp, suggesting that the stone portion of the blade is not so much a weapon as a liability. His voice is deep and growling, when he speaks--and his roar is deafeningly loud. His breath is terrible and sulfurous. His hind legs are muscular and strong, tipped with thick black claws; likewise, thin black talon-like claws, like hooks, protrude from the tip of each wing-bone. Old burn-scarring laces his left flank back up along his back, and the wing-leather at the base of his right wing is slightly torn in places, though not badly enough to affect his flight.

Dread's stone is a jet black, razor sharp blade of obsidian running along the upper edge of the spade-spike of his tail. It could be used as a fearsome weapon against something so soft as flesh--yet it leaves his stone vulnerable to attack in turn. He will, as a result, often sleep with his head and winged foreclaws clutched protectively over his tail.

"Tattoos" formed by dye affixed magically to his scales form glowing, flame-colored symbols which grace his neck, flanks and haunches, down along his tail. They form sweeping, sharp-edged lines. Two golden rings are affixed to one of the two largest horns that twist back from his skull. One of these rings is a plain, shiny band. The other is engraved with the same elegant lines that form his dye-patterns.

Dread has evolved greatly over his lifespan. At his base, he is an aggressive predator, a dragon in all the mythical senses of the word: destructive, temperamental, savage, and brutal. If he sees something that he desires, he will pursue it and take it if he can, and greedily guard it in his dragon's hoard. If it belongs to someone else, he may try to bargain for it first, but his greed might overcome his manners. He is territorial, though experiences with other gembound have tempered him from bestial ferocity into at least managing basic conversation. Given his simple nature, though, an angry attack might just wind up coming across as the tantrum of a huge, firebreathing but ultimately petulant child.

His experiences with others have granted him some measure of understanding regarding social interaction: basic manners via White, the bird-dog hybrid; some measure of kindness and the idea of gift-giving through Asimona, the white dragon; and further friendship, guardianship and exchange through the eagle Glory. He is a materialistic creature, simply so, and easily "bought" with shiny objects.

His mind is not that of a social mammal, with a great deal of altruism and sympathy. Instead, it's more dulled, somewhere between a cold, calculating reptile and a sharp, predatory bird. This does not mean he is aloof or avoids interaction; he is almost violently loud in conversation, very temperamental in terms of coming and going, though not as easily stirred to violence as one might initially expect. Still, Dread will never be particularly skilled at lying, manipulating, beseeching or even conversation. Instead, he is liable to demand what he wants. Beneath this, however, Dread is not blindly vicious and savage, nor in any way sadistic. He does not wander around looking for others to torment; he does not initiate aggression unless they have in some way bothered him, intruded on his den, or stolen his things and so on. However, his definitions of what is "his" may vary; hunting too close to his own hunting territory may provoke his anger. But, though seeing things with a simple and animalistic mind, he is not "evil" or aggressive without reason. Dread may even provide aid to others, so long as it does not inconvenience him too much; he sees no real reason not to. And thanks to his sapient nature, the dragon has learned a new trick: given his learned restraint with violence, he has discovered the art of trade. He is still developing this skill, but he has learned that to get what he wants--gold--he can trade away the less-desirable objects from his hoard. He has now set himself to this with all the cunning intensity of a draconic predator, setting up a public pile of stuff and doing his best to convince others to trade with him. How far this might go--abandoned, or polished into the skills of a great merchant--has yet to be determined.

History

See Post Log for more. Dread hatched in Fornax. He met very few other Gembound in this remote cave--only Asimona made any lasting impact, offering gifts of ice sculpture. Eventually, growing larger, Dread went exploring the caves. Ultimately he settled for a den in Monoceros.

His interactions with others have been limited. Some, like the eagle Glory, have brought him shiny objects and earned some measure of friendship from him. He is tentative allies with the Kingdom of the Seven of Orion after Envy offered the same. He was, as an adolescent in Monoceros, taught some manners by the bird-dog hybrid White. He was unknowingly plagued by the diseased horse Khloros, and cured by a large snake whose name he could not pronounce.

Dread has since discovered the power of trade, and attempts to gather anything and everything into his hoard and then trade the less attractive items toward a final goal of gold.

After the Raid in Polaris and its tunnel opened up further quadrants of the cave, Dread moved from his dry den in upper Monoceros to an island in Leo's bay.

Dread then fathered another trio of children: Ember, by request, who was left with Pride (reviving the stone of the wolf Fireheart), and then (prompted by loneliness) the child Callum and a hybrid with Kalama. He returned to his stone shortly thereafter to recover from a spar with Blight, emerging longer (in tail, primarily) than before.
