Appearance
When East tumbles out from the darkness of his chrysalis, he doesn’t have much going for him in the way of intimidation. He’s small and covered in fluffy feathers. His coloration makes him look as if he’d bathed himself in a river of mud, only splotches of his underside appearing clean and white. Eyes large and bright yellow, the bird seems almost angry—at his life, world, or supposed lack of hygiene by observers is anyone’s guess. If this isn’t comical enough, an angular chunk of smoky quartz rests upon his head. It’s opaque enough to be nearly pure black though faint swirls and specks can be seen if peered at closely.
As maturity approaches, he becomes sleek and black. White streaks remain at the throat, the sole vulnerability of this shadowy figure. The quartz, once an unusual adornment, melds with the jet feathers of his crest to create a brimmed hat. Tottering steps and desperate flaps of wings are replaced by the calm, confident pursuit of a sleuth on the trail. His glare now carries genuine threat if he so chooses, backed by a razor beak and talons. Mellifluous with a hint of gravel, East’s voice treads the fine line between rough and smooth. Personality
East is born a cynic, never taking things at face value and always keeping an eye out for the worst outcome. However, for one so mistrustful, he carries himself with poise untainted by paranoia. There’s comfort to be found in believing everybody to be at least a bit of a scoundrel. Nobody’s without suspicion, so he can treat them all the same: keep them at a distance and watch for danger.
Most of his early life he spends as a quiet witness. Any misdeeds are noted and filed away as further proof of his own gloomy outlook. The good is seen too but only to be remarked upon as a fragile condition all too easily shattered. Even so, he is not devoid of humor. Sharp wit weaves into his comments when he actually bothers to break his silence. Despite his pessimistic attitude, he’s driven by a strong sense of right and wrong. If something feels off, he’ll pick at the issue like stripping flesh from bone. It’s difficult to deter him when in this state, often requiring a sufficient beating or evasion to remove his scrutiny. This conviction is not resistant to erosion, time likely to wear it down to dust if not carefully preserved. Growing, the realization will hit that cooperation is necessary for his continued survival in the caves.
