Appearance
Adult Quick Stats: 23” long | 34” wingspan | 2lbs | light brown/grey/black feathers | royal-blue iridescent speculum feathers | traffic-cone-orange feet | orange beak smudged with dark grey | brown eyes | lapis lazuli gem jutting from spine like a rounded dorsal fin — travels all the way down her back
Nora doesn’t look like anything special. She’s just a regular-looking Mallard Duck with a blue sail popping out of her back. She waddles like every duck when she’s on land, but in the water, she’s graceful, and can be pretty fast when she wants to be. Her coloration could be considered rather bland by those who prefer the flashy green-headed males of her species, but her feather patterns are quite attractive to the right eye. Her gem is the only flashy part about her (aside from her shiny blue-purple speculum feathers), a sort of “dorsal fin” that rises out of her spine like a half-oval. It’s not very tall, but it is long, extending down to stop just before her tail feathers. The dark blue is sprinkled with glittering gold (actually, the gold flecks are natural inlays of pyrite), like most lapis lazuli, and the gold sparkles and flashes in the right light. Nora usually has a kind of vaguely happy expression on her face, one that makes it difficult to discern what she’s actually feeling. Her gaze often seems faraway, as if she’s not entirely in the present moment. Personality
Lawful Good | INFP-T | The Peacemaker | Cancer | Panromantic
Using psychologist Carl Jung’s 12 Common Archetypes, Nora is a mix between the Innocent, the Caregiver, and the Lover. She’s a bit of a goody-two-shoes, and doesn’t really understand the concept of deceiving or in any way wronging others. Actually, right now, she doesn’t have any concept of Right and Wrong at all. She’s a blank slate, but her moral compass is naturally pointing straight at the Good Side. She could hypothetically be manipulated into doing something wrong, but it would take an awful lot of convincing. Nora is shy and also kind of a scaredy-duck, so it might be surprising to learn that she feels right at home in her birthplace, the Heart of Cetus. She is a duck, so that might explain it a bit, but even the creepy shrouding fog doesn’t scare her. Actually, the fact that she can’t see very far ahead of her makes her feel safe, because it means others can’t see her either. She feels more comfortable when she’s alone, though this might change over time. In fact, the older she gets, and the more Gembounds she meets, the more her Caregiver personality will come out. She’ll become a sort of Mother Figure to anyone who needs emotional support, but don’t expect her to fight a battle for you. If it’s for the sake of a Gemling, she’ll lay down her life if needed, but she’d much rather just make you run away and hide with her, somewhere shadowy, misty, and hard to navigate — like Cetus. Truly, her birthplace will stick with her wherever she goes, and being out in the open, somewhere like Polaris, will scare her to death. Eridanus might not be so bad, with its mossy trees and ferns to hide in, but it is a much brighter place than Cetus, and the brightness will probably frighten her. Even Pisces, with all its water, might scare her. Bare rock offers nowhere to hide. She’d have mixed feelings about Fornax, amazed at the sheer magnitude of water, and somewhat comforted by the heavy steam from the heat, but the lack of trees would still make her feel too open and exposed, especially if the steam let up. Orion would certainly be dark enough for her, but anywhere lacking water or vegetation would be terrifying. Nora doesn’t like to be anywhere that doesn’t have a good water source because water is both her shelter and her food supply. Without a constant presence of water, she feels naked and alone in the world, even if she’s surrounded by others. Her trips to places in the South-East Quadrant will be few and far between. Canis and Monoceros, with their piles of bones and massive Twister respectively, are probably completely out. One look inside either of those rooms and she’d be waddling away as fast her webbed feet could carry her. Despite her fearful, nervous, sheltered nature, Nora just wants to be loved and to have friends. Maybe she doesn’t want to spend as much time with you as your other friends do; maybe she needs a lot more space and alone time than others; but ducks are social creatures in the end, and she does appreciate any friends she makes. Her greatest wish in life, once she is old enough to understand it, is that one day she will be a mother with a loving mate — a mate who doesn’t mind the fact that she’s a complete homebody and terrified to step outside the comfort of Cetus. Hopefully she’ll find someone patient enough to deal with her, and to maybe teach her how to be brave, if only a little. History

Notes:
Nora has agoraphobia — the fear of open spaces and of leaving safe places. (It can also mean fear of crowds but she doesn’t have this part of it. Being in a crowd would certainly make her nervous, but it doesn’t scare her to death the way the other two things do).
