Appearance

Like most bird hatchlings, Hera is in no way 'cute' or 'pretty'. She is small and seemingly malformed, covered in off-white down. Her eyes seem to constantly squint, and her beak is a dark color. Her gemstone is a bright, yellow-green, seeming to glow in the dark, while being a pale white color in the rare cavelight. It sits at the tip of her beak, like an egg-tooth that never went away. Her eyes are a dull yellow-orange color.

Once she has become a juvenile, she is much less awkward looking. Her down has shed, revealing flight feathers. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to the color, with the tops of her wings being rich brown, the rest of her wings being dirt-brown, and the tips of her wings black. There are white and cream feathers in seemingly random patterns. Her torso is dark brown, with white spots. Her gem has grown in size, covering the tip of her beak. Hera's eyes have gone from yellow-orange, to yellow.

Once she has become an adult, Hera makes much more sense. The vast majority of her feathers are dark brown, lightening in color as you get to the tip. Her beak is a bright yellow color, with her gem replacing the tip like an egg-tooth. It isn't uncommon for her to dye her feathers with plant juice. Her eyes have gone from yellow, to a bright golden color.

Personality

Hera definitely has a bone to pick. As a hatchling, she hates how she looks, being little more than a puffball of down. When she sees how other Gemlings look, not fluffy little beasts, but appearing to be more like miniature versions of adults, it makes her more sour. She views those she sees as prettier than her as rivals, while looking down upon those she views as uglier. She constantly tries to make herself look prettier, whether by attempting to dye her down, or winding pretty things into her feathers.

As she becomes an adult, and her feathers come in, she becomes rather vain. She loves nothing more than to preen, and play with her feathers, finding ways to make them look prettier, dyeing them with plants. Hera views those that seem to be prettier than her as rivals, and constantly works to sabotage them, or put them down. She refuses to spend time with those who appear to be much uglier than her, attempting to make them 'learn their places' as unders to their 'betters'. She surrounds herself with those who she believes to be slightly less pretty than she is, and attempts to keep herself at the head of the group.

Now, though, the trauma of the Trials and the change in her body has made her... reluctant. Quieter and more subdued, like her feathers. She thinks that her gray feathers look remarkably like they did when she was all down and awkward angles, which is... distinctly upsetting. She certainly doesn't feel pretty anymore, and her new form is a blatant reminder of the mistakes she made and the trauma she endured.

She's also... not the brightest animal in the world. Not stupid, certainly, but she makes very poor decisions and struggles to foresee the consequences of her actions. She seeks knowledge just like every other Child, but intelligence is very different from wisdom. And while Hera is generally rather friendly, especially to strangers, her opinion of the Masters has been deeply, deeply poisoned. She has a quiet rage in her heart and the Trial has left its mark on her. Even the grand stag Astraea no longer carries her trust. (Why did he have to kill all those Lessers, anyway?)
