Appearance

At time of hatching, Huma is a fluffy little scrap of down and bones with the type of glare that can wither your soul. A white puffball whose puff has not exactly grown in just yet, she struggles to move long distances and prefers to sleep all day. Hunting is possible, though not in the typical way — she won’t be able to fly until sometime in her third cycle. Her voice is shrieky and loud, meant to draw the attention of older owls who might decide to feed her.

As she grows, her body will become more awkward — her baby puff will stay for several cycles, even as flight feathers begin to grow in. Her talons will grow in their effectiveness as she gains strength with them, and her beak will as well. Huma will be all awkward angles in her teenage cycles, and will be a true ugly duckling — her glares will fade into miserable scowls, and it will become almost impossible for her to look anything other than annoyed or startled.

Finally though, her adult feathers will grow in and she will gain the sleekness and grace of an adult owl. Her white, heart-shaped face will mark her as a barn owl, with graceful white feathers spotted generously with brown and black. Her black eyes will sparkle with excitement, and her voice will become softer; deep and smooth, teetering on the edge of androgynous. While not exactly known for it, Huma will be a lovely singer if she bothers to put the effort in.

A lethal and stealthy hunter, she will pride herself on her appearance and keep her feathers immaculate — only when well-groomed can she perform with any effectiveness — but more than that, so many cycles of being fluffy and awkward will never let her forget how lucky she is to be beautiful. Huma carries herself with pride, now — pride in her abilities, her senses, and herself. Not every creature makes it to adulthood; she is lucky to be among of them.

While it will be covered by down for her first few cycles, Huma’s stone is a small, crooked crescent of crazy lace agate on her chest, emerging from her breastbone where it is rooted. It will be easily visible in adulthood, but will blend in to her feathers rather well from a distance (and especially in flight) due to similar coloration and small size.

Personality

Fire is a wild, unpredictable, and uncontrolled element — and Huma reflects that. She is unrestrained and hot-headed, a violent force of nature and a spitfire of energy. Her first instinct when threatened is to fight, although she’s not big enough to do much damage unless you have very soft skin (especially in her first couple cycles). She has fire on her tongue and in her talons — she speaks her mind and does not care for the consequences of her actions. Huma is opportunistic but impatient, and broadly, a creature at odds with herself.

The truth of the matter is, she is deeply insecure, both in her appearance and in her fire. Because she has no control over herself, the magic threatens to control her. She hates to watch other Gembound be hurt by her actions, and would honestly prefer to settle somewhere quietly and seek out the wealth of knowledge that the Origin Cave offers. Huma is deeply enthralled by history and research, and is genuinely a very intelligent little bird when she gives herself the chance to be — the only problem is, she hasn’t yet swallowed her false pride and admitted this to herself.

If Huma wants to have any control over herself or her magic, she will need to learn self-control first. The external fire will not calm until she tames the fire within; until she is “reborn”, much like her namesake, she will never achieve her full potential. Potential allies will likely be shunned, but unless she is forced to tame her patience and gain a little perspective, she will need other Gembound to help guide her.
