Appearance
Karyo is a black and white Saluki dog. They stand 25 inches high at the shoulder and weigh 50 pounds at adulthood. Their ears and tail especially are covered with long, silky strands of "feathering", but there is also some shorter fluff on the backs of their legs. Otherwise, their fur is very short (though still silky-smooth), their skin is thin, and their frame is delicate-looking. They were built for speed, with long legs, a light body, a deep chest, and an efficient heart and lungs. Their face, too, is extremely slender, giving the impression that it is much longer than usual. Though their tall, slender build might imply grace and dignity, Karyo themselves is anything but dignified. They're all lolling tongue and toothy grins, restless and hyperactive one moment and peacefully napping the next.
They are black on top and white on the bottom: the black on their face ends just above their brown eyes, apart from a thin black stripe down the middle of their snout. Their throat is white apart from a necklace-like, vaguely v-shaped stripe of black across the middle. Their chest, the insides of their legs (and the outsides, for the lower half), and their belly are all white, while the rest of their torso is black. The feathers on their ears are both black and white, giving them a smoky look. The very top of their tail is totally black, while the long feathers growing there are pure white. Their gem, Vladimirivanovite, is deep blue in color with a glistening vitreous luster. It takes the form of a cluster of small crystals growing just above their left shoulder, a perfect complement for the black fur there. As a puppy, Karyo seems less lanky, built more like your average dog instead of like a greyhound. Their feathering won't have grown in yet, so you can see clearly how large and floppy their ears are. Karyo has the mannerisms of a cat, shoving their face against anyone they want to shower with affection - which happens to be almost everyone. As soon as they figure out what purring is and how to do it as a dog, they'll become absolutely obsessed. Meeting a new friend? PURR. Talking to an old friend? PURR. Doing absolutely anything? PURR. Feeling bad and need some comfort? PURR. AND FACE SHOVES AND CUDDLES. They're convinced that with enough affection and purring (and maybe a dash of magic and creativity), every problem will go away eventually. They might seem almost incapable of taking anything seriously. They get bored easily, and tend not to finish large tasks, especially if it is the only thing they are working on. They do better with multi-tasking, so that they can return to other things if they tire of one thing. They're impulsive, and often don't think their decisions through all that well. Although they are friendly and eager to offer help to whoever needs it at the moment, they will inevitably move on to another adventure if they do not get more tasks or games to keep them entertained. That's not to say they'd intentionally abandon someone without warning; it's more like they'd go out one day to have some fun, get distracted, and just... forget to come back for a long, long time. And they are rather uncommunicative about their plans, whether that's because they're purposefully vague or just because they forget to reveal all the details. Karyo loves to collect trinkets, feathers, and pretty gems. When faced with a conflict they can't resolve with lots of purrs and cuddling, they might attempt to offer a trinket in exchange for peace. This does not please them, however-- they get very attached to their treasures. Karyo suffers from fatal insomnia, a prion disease that leads to neuron death in their thalamus. Chrysalis healing may alleviate symptoms in earlier stages, but does not fix the problem. It is caused by a mutation in the gene that codes for the prion protein, and the prions will just keep coming back unless their DNA itself is changed.
Cycle 9: mild insomnia, problems concentrating/paying attention, forgetfulness. When they sleep, their dreams are vivid and often bizarre. Cycle 10: Moderate insomnia, worsened problems from previous stage, weight loss, slightly slurred speech, trouble swallowing. May seem more uncoordinated. Cycles 11-12: Worsening insomnia progressing to complete inability to sleep; feverish feeling despite lack of infection; elevated heart rate; coordination problems, tremors, and muscle spasms; slurred speech; episodes of confusion and hallucinations; eventual coma and death at the beginning of cycle 13. Chrysalization without mutation will have little to no effect.
