Appearance

The swarm of tiny beings are difficult to pinpoint with the naked eye. At times they are a cloud of buzzing brown-grey, at others, a mantle of what look like flies resting on a surface. If examined individually, each creature somewhat resembles a winged mite: opaque, dusty-colored, and four-winged like a dragonfly. They are also iridescent, and give off the impression of solid swathes of color by precisely orienting their bodies en masse toward light sources--though they can, and sometimes do, glow.

Legion can take any form it so desires: the swarm, a hive-mind, can imitate any form it sees, or create a variation on one, or even create all new ones from nothing but imagination. These shapes are never solid, however: they are a constantly-blurred image, shifting ever-so-slightly, and humming with a soft buzz. Often, there's flashes of light: bioluminescence within the body.

Generally speaking, Legion no longer bears a single chosen form, instead nervously choosing a small amorphous cloud of brown that keeps to the shadows. As a swarm of tiny beings merely imitating larger ones, Legion comes with a few pecularities. First, its ability to harm or be harmed, physically: it cannot strike an enemy with the force of anything but gnats. A physical strike, therefore, might disperse its present form--but the individual tiny creatures, unless crushed, will be difficult to harm. Magic is liable to hurt them a great deal more. Rather than healing in the normal sense, Legion will--when injured--retreat to regenerate new "units" to replace any lost. Taking larger forms leaves Legion more and more dispersed and transparent: a cat, for example, might seem perfectly realistic but an elephant will be a large, elephant-shaped thin brown cloud. And regardless of which form it takes, Legion's voice will always hold an undercurrent of humming or buzzing. Individually, the mites can--as a swarm--fit through even the tiniest spaces, or take high into the air as a cloud of flies.

For both mending and for energy, Legion requires an intake of food, which it primarily seeks through carrion--seeing itself as a cleaner--or through fruits or even vegetation.

Legion's gemstone is a bright green, slightly-radioactive Titanite. This stone makes up the thorax of the 'queen' or hive controller, a very slightly larger 'mite.' As a result the gemstone is barely more than a speck, though when the swarm is still, the largest and its gem can be picked out by its spot of neon color.

Personality

Legion is a hive-mind: a swarm of thousands of tiny, curious beings sharing one 'controller.' It does not know how it came into being, or why it is here. It began as a friendly, intensely curious and personal creature. Events, however, have taken the swarm from naive and gently friendly to bitterly suspicious and fierce. Betrayed by the fungus 'Mother,' their entire swarm bar the Queen was lost. Rather than brightly lighthearted, then, the Queen is wary, rightfully angry, and determined to wreak vengeance on the Hive. A second tragedy, in the form of Fission taking hold, saw Legion's attempts to reproduce create instead a parasitic twin that devoured its entire brood while it lay helpless. As the original swarm is rebuilt, this newfound bitterness, trauma and angry righteousness is likely to reshape Legion and their values, behavior and beliefs profoundly.

Legion often pauses to gather the opinions of every single being in its swarm: the swarm as a whole is, in essence, merely a mouthpiece for thousands of tiny, mind-linked lives. While the Queen is now an angry, bitter thing, her mites are without her experience, knowing only her fury with a sort of wary sympathy. While they will act as one, Legion as a swarm is fully aware of its own damaged nature, and how it has been changed by the horrors it has undergone; like a traumatized person it may even debate with itself over the right course of action, or how reasonable its own behavior might be.
