Appearance

Spindly, tawny, and utterly tiny at birth, this deer seems to have grown into something else over the cycles. Where her back was once dusted with a collection of light brown spots, she is now one uniform color. Shaky legs have grown tall, although they still seem almost too thin to hold her weight, in the oxymoronic grace of most deer. The ears atop her head seem to be constantly swiveling at the slightest sound, prey instincts evident even while relaxed.

'Deer' doesn't seem the right word to call her, at times. She walks in the shape of one—reddish brown fur, black hooves that click lightly on stone—but there's something detached in the way she acts. Something ethereal in the way she walks so delicately, hooves barely brushing the ground; her footsteps seem far quieter than they should be. Her voice is muted and unfocused, like a breeze brushing past one's ears, and instead of a normal deer head, glinting eyes gaze out of what seems to be a skull set upon her head.

This skull is her gemstone—a specimen of tourmalinated quartz stretching from the tip of her nose to the back of her head, set over her face in the shape of bones, giving her the appearance of wearing the skull of some odd animal. In fact, this stone is set deep enough in her face to replace flesh; although the skin and fur around her eyes seems mostly intact, glancing through the clear stone and past its black inclusions reveal the bone beneath. Her eyes certainly don't help the look; they are cloudy and unfocused, glassy like doll's eyes—or, perhaps, that of a dead fish. They shine unnaturally in the dark, revealing her presence when shrouded in shadow.

Some part of her seems to have internalized her birthplace—Canis, the room of bones and remains of creatures slaughtered one by one by one, filled with death and desolation—as one should be. She seems to be a gembound straddling the line between life and death; seeming like a ghost with her general demeanor and voice. No fear ever enters her eyes; although she does have a survival instinct, it seems more muted than most Gembound. Marrow gives the impression that if she was just slightly less attached to this earth, she would drift away like the last thought of a dying gembound, never to be seen again.

But she is living, despite all outward appearances; and so she continues to appear to walk the line between the veil, stepping between bones and taking residence among the remains of the dead simply because she feels more at home here than anywhere else.

And she creates, in her time. Marrow lives for both life and death. Both crushing the remains of unfortunate mice and birds between her blunt teeth, because despite her species she was raised by predators who taught her nothing but the hunt—and coaxing blossoms out from between barren stone, stitching bones back together so that they can run and live once more. She has a particular adoration for the thought of creation; the time that isn't spent hunting or otherwise sustaining herself is put towards honing her magic, adorning the place she lives with macabre structures of plant and bone. To others, the things she makes out of the remains of others may just be puppets controlled only by her will—but to her, stitching together old bones using vines as tendons and moss as skin gives them new life. Her creations are more than just puppets—they are her children.
