Appearance

Birth does not always produce beauty. Oftentimes the first seconds, days, months, or years will be filled by the exact opposite. Stumbling, drooling awkwardness might mark a child’s start. Wild, untempered behavior might plague them until the time comes when they recognize its undesirable consequences, or perhaps never at all. Many such examples reside already in the caves of beasts whose thirst for blood and chaos were never quenched. Woe be that the caves introduce yet another to their ranks.

Of these, there are many tales, yet this is not one of them. Enter Miriam: her majesty is only limited by her size, and that continues to grow.

At the beginning she can be measured like a length of delicately wrought chain; small, golden, and textured by the keel of her scales, the child could be mistaken for a 14-inch necklace that hugs a royal’s throat. Her smooth white underbelly disproves the initial impression. Dainty, her width is like that of an exceptionally slender forearm. Like any other developing being, she consumes to reach greater sizes, and at this tender age the feedings are more frequent than the glacial pace they will eventually become. Her figure is more substantial when she is satiated, albeit temporarily.

Not long out of the chrysalis, she can produce venom. Spat towards a target in an awful spray, inhalation or ingestion can cause issues of varying severity depending upon the duration of exposure and the concentration of the droplets. Effects can range from headaches, difficulty breathing, and drowsiness to convulsions, decreased blood pressure, and ataxia.

Shed after shed adds more links to the chain. New features prepare to emerge with every discarded skin. Once a face that only carried some feline aspects, such as whiskers and a deceptively tiny maw (one that can widen far to swallow prey), flaps of scale clad flesh folded against her skull slowly unfurl to reveal pointed ears. Their tips curl backwards like horns, and the skin inside is pale. Previously unblemished scales begin to blotch, darkening and shifting to integrate a bronze marble pattern into the gold while a half mask forms around one of her eyes. Claws on the two reptilian forepaws she possesses sharpen and curve, and the dexterity of her toes increases as they lengthen.

Reaching adolescence is signaled by a change in eye color, what’d originally been an icy hue losing its frost and becoming bluer. When the fourth cycle finally comes to pass, their intensity reaches a peak: a bright and burning ultramarine. Like in earlier cycles, they take up a significant portion of her face though now appearing alien compared to other, more mature features. From thenceforth, at a considerable length of 15 feet, her appetite and growth slow, most major adjustments complete.

Personality

Many words are associated with children: boisterous, troublesome, curious, uninhibited. Yet, blatantly in her youth, Miriam is none of them. Her eyes do not blink. Her face is as unmoving as stone. Every step or slither she takes is slow, deliberate while she measures the world up in her wide, surveying gaze.

Often what she finds is of little interest to her. The trees she knows are hers to inhabit, and the ground below is hers to prowl. Lessers are meals, nothing more, and Greaters do not receive any better attention despite their heightened intellect. Her mind, hedonistic and spurred by selfishness, perceives them only when their existence benefits two topics: aesthetics and personal gain.

Bereft of a visible gem of her own, the tatzelwurm finds herself drawn to those with the most eye-catching of specimens. There might be an element of jealousy at play, judging by the twisting sneer of her lips that she learns to hide with age when engaging with those her inferior, but perhaps it is a mere fondness for things carrying artistic appeal. Once an example she likes enters her sight, the vision does not leave her. She is compelled to gravitate towards its presence or render a cheap replica of its image, whether carved in wood or stone.

Practice enables her to mask cold apathy behind sunny smiles and demure steps so that she may approach these rare objects of her desire, and in doing so, she develops an affection for theatre. All stories are carefully edited accounts, some chock full of lies. All mannerisms are parts of a costume, sewn together for a player to don and flaunt about upon the long and winding stage of the caves. Her favorite persona becomes that of the kind and charming friend or mentor; through it, she reels her target in with song, dance, and pretty words to add them to her collection. And then her claws sink in to mold them into her personal lackey, dependent on her for support and guidance.

Her goal possesses such simplicity, as that is all she is: a lazy and self-indulgent combination of serpent and feline.
