Appearance
 Opal is an amphibious, eel-like Gembound. He is 15 feet long and stands around 3.5 feet in height on 4 short legs, much like an overgrown river otter. His slimy, purple skin is pulled taut over his bones and muscles, giving him a somewhat emaciated appearance. As his body suggests, Opal is most comfortable in the water. The four-toed, sharp claws on his legs are webbed. Fins made for swimming run along the side of his neck and down his lower back, as well as on the end of his tail. Opal also has 5 sets of gills located on his chest, behind his front limbs. The slime on Opal's skin is foul-tasting and toxic. It contains tetrodotoxin, a deadly neurological poison that causes rapid weakening and paralysis of muscles, especially respiratory. Symptoms can include shortness of breath, drooling, and, sometimes, seizures. His body secrets much of it to keep him from drying out on land. It also makes him slippery and difficult to grab, especially when under stress, as he produces an excess amount of the mucus. Yellow bioluminescent spots run down his sides which pulse erratically. Somewhat shaped like a fish's, Opal head has three bulging eyes on his face, as bright and yellow as his bioluminescence. There are two on the side, and one peculiar, prehensile eyestalk on his forehead. That one dangles over like an anglerfish's lure. Using the eyestalk, he can look in all directions. A mess of long, sharp teeth protrude from his broad snout, lipless, like a creature of the deep. He also has a set of pharyngeal jaws in his throat which are mainly used for swallowing. Opal uses the fins on his neck and his bioluminescence to to help express emotions. This can be helpful to determine what he is thinking, as his face, although bug-eyed, isn't all that expressive. His gem, a beautiful, glistening, black opal is buried in the base of his tail fin, part of which is visible on the surface. Personality
A product of his time, the blood-soaked trials of the Overseers forged him into the reclusive creature he is today. Opal 376 does not trust easily. He was not conditioned for community- or kindness. Although he had tasted warmth and belonging, it became soured by the revelation that he was just a pawn who had almost lost himself completely. No one would ever touch his heart, or his mind, so deeply again. Although the new age had softened him, Opal 376 remains vigilant, ever skeptical of others' intentions and positive outcomes. He regards the newer gembounds with quiet curiosity, but prefers to keep them at tails length, and laments on the deep chasm separating them from him- one he was never fully aware of, until now. Opal is cautious by nature, carefully calculating his moves and intentions as if one wrong step could spell his doom, but also quick to act should the situation turn dire. Opal has the remarkable talent of remaining level-headed under most circumstances, almost never losing his grip or letting rational thought get clouded by emotion. His mind is his most powerful weapon; when his strength gave, when his magic failed, it was wit that saved him. And a little luck. There is strange side to his cold pragmatism; a surprising thoughtfulness. Beneath a stoic veneer, resides a contemplative mind, silently questioning the very world around him and his place in it. In rare instances, he reaches beyond himself to share wisdom or lend a claw- though usually born from self-serving motives, sometimes, a glimmer of genuine compassion peaks through. Through it all, one truth endured: survival at all costs. Nothing is more precious to him than his own life, lived on his own terms. It's not just about avoiding death. No false Mother, no wrathful Masters; their shackles will neber have him again. There is no length he won't go to, no blood he won't spill, no pain he won't endure to ensure this. History
Opal remembers very little of his past before the Great Awakening. Only snippets and sensations remain, buried deep in his mind, and are as vague and fleeting as yesterday's dream. What he does remember clearly was the never ending cycle of pain and brutality. Back then, Opal had no name, no identity; other than his gem and a number. He endured Hydra's trials for as far back as he can remember, and when he wasn't at its mercy, he trained for it. Why? For what? Opal no longer remembers, or perhaps he was never made aware in the first place. Then one day, he woke up, and five thousand years past by him in the blink of an eye. Though most of the caves looked the same, they were not. The Masters no longer had an iron grip, the cycle had been broken. Suddenly, he was free. But Opal had no idea what to think. His mind had been conditioned to follow orders. He never knew a life without structure; with out danger around every corner. In Fornax, he swam unbound, unchained, for the first time in his life. He could go anywhere, do anything- there was no Overseer shouting orders, no threat of death. After everything he endured, this should have been a paradise, but Squelch never felt more on edge in his life. With no direction, everything seemed like a test. Everyday, he expected the Overseers to rip him from his beloved water and throw him in Hydra again. Opal found himself beginning to dread that day, but a part of him also wished for it. Although he seemed free, he never truly felt free. His mind was stuck in the past, and he longed for familiarity of it. That was... until he met Mother. It was She who tore off the last of the champion's shackles and shown him another way, one that he did not have to walk alone. Through her he found family, warmth, and a new purpose. For the first time, it wasn't fear that drove him, but love; and he realized that there was much more to life than merely surviving it. But for all the good she has done, Mother was not what she seemed... Coerced into assassinating Revik, Opal 376's attempts were thwarted by the Bonebound. In an unexpected show of mercy- or perhaps unintended cruelty- his connection to the Hive was severed. It was in this, he realized it had been a lie. He had not been loved; he had been violated, body and mind, used. Freed from Mother's influence, Opal 376 helped them, the Kingdom of the Seven, and the Children of Rot assault Mother's Hive in a bid to free her other hosts from a false family. Unable to find Reji, the only being he felt a genuine connection with, unadulterated by Mother, Opal wandered the caves aimless, empty, and lost. Heartbroken, he returned to his chrysalis and hibernated for many cycles more... |
