Appearance
Orthus is a walking mouth. It possesses immense jaws that can crush and shear through most things, able to crush with a massive bite. With a powerful digestive system, Orthus can and will eat most anything. Carried on a powerful, long body which is always "upright;" symmetrical vertically, flipping it over will do nothing. Both sides of the head are the top and the jaw, with hinges and a brain set far back.
Small beady red eyes glitter from the base of the skull. A finned, meaty tail allows for swimming. What it has gained in power and stamina, it trades in dexterity. It lacks much in the way of it, and it often moves as a tortoise, slow and heavy, if moving itself is a chore. Despite this, Orthus is capable of surprising bursts of speed. It can only maintain such bursts for a scant few seconds, twenty at most. It stands about 9 feet at whatever could be considered the "top". Three thick claws lie at the end of it's legs, able to gouge thick wood and tightly packed dirt, and even scrape rock. Personality
Orthus is a slow, lazy creature. Most often it enjoys sleeping and eating. But Orthus is also a ruminatory beast. It often gives those around it the illusion of it being stupid, which it doesn't seem to care about all to much. It keeps it's sentences curt and literal, and it is rather blunt about its thoughts. Rarely though it might say something of insight. Orthus is curious about most foods, and enjoys trying everything at least once. Or twice. Or several times over.
Orthus is unendingly patient, and tolerates most others that it meets. Unless given a direct command by Mother, it is overly passive, and will not go out of its way to attack or avoid another creature. It is also accordingly--and possibly quite frustratingly to Mother--rather horrid as a converter of gembound. It will never go out of its way to ask another gembound to join them in the web unless it is, yet again, given a direct command from Mother. It sees the idea as a chore with more effort than it is worth. It is much more likely to ask a creature to join it in eating some tasty rocks. It cares more about texture than taste, and enjoys things with rough texture most of all, breaking them down into smooth, small chunks. While it is not too choosy about what it will eat, it much prefers that which is inorganic. While it doesn't have a creative mind per-se, nor is it a dexterous beast, it enjoys making the things it eats into symmetrical, complex structures. It eats deliberately when it can, taking equal chunks off every side. Occasionally it might leave these structures to admire them, and other times it simply eats the leftover structures whole.
