Appearance

This strange hybrid appears almost seal-like, with a streamlined form and sleek, slimy skin. Like a whale, it possesses baleen for filter-feeding, but like its life-giver also possesses a sharp upper beak and is capable of digesting almost any matter it can swallow. It has an extendable neck. As a baby, it will be around four feet long and capable of short bursts of movement on land with its fins- however as an adult it cannot leave the water without being crushed by its own weight. As an adult, it will be 20ft in total, from nose to tailtip. Like Nox, its soft skin can change texture and this is often used to show its emotions- but certain parts of its body possess small rows of hidden spikes that will give potential attackers a nasty shock. Like its mother, it constantly produces a slime that, in addition to being foul-tasting and slippery, is highly combustible. Its fins resemble Nox's wings, with strange, bubble-like growths running in stripes down its sides just above its ridged underbelly, and trailing from its tail flukes. It possesses small, vestigal fins just above its tailfins.

It has only one eye on the exterior of its body, which, like Nox's, is protected by its gem. This eye has poor eyesight, but the hybrid can open its mouth to reveal another eye in the back of its throat, red in colour with a slit pupil.

Personality

As a child, Phlegethon is excitable but rather prone to what some may call violence towards anything that's smaller than it and moves. If it can fit in its mouth and it runs away from it, you can bet it'll try to eat it. The strange beast is easily excited by the mention of food and the presence of it, and will not hesitate to gobble up your food if you offer it. It is ravenous as a youngster and seems to constantly be eating food to fuel his rapid growth. It's absolutely incredible how much this neonate eats.

When its growth spurt hits, it will become rather clumsy and unaware of its own size, constantly bumping into things and misjudging distances and how small and fragile other gembound are.

As an adult, Phlegethon is an interesting beast in that it is driven by both instinct and intellect. It is slow, purposeful in its movements and thoughts. Some may consider it to be lazy by nature, but it simply doesn't move without reason. If it doesn't have to be anywhere, it just lounges around and waits. One of its favorite pastimes is sleeping, if that tells you anything. The monster's docility gets broken by its food-oriented mentality and being hungry — it becomes irritable and prone to attacking anything that moves. In these times (and really any times) it is easily manipulated by food and promises of it. Even when it doesn't hunger, it happily accepts food and gobbles it up eagerly, selfishly. Don't expect it to share even scraps of something.

It rather enjoys conversation and the company of others (even if they're silent), despite its looming, intimidating appearance. Due to this, Phlegethon has a strong preference towards not eating greater gembound as long as they prove to be good, benevolent, or simply neutral toward it. It turns a cold shoulder to those who are rude to it and gives violence to those who physically attack it. Phlegethon is unforgiving and never forgets a face, ever. An eye for an eye mentality drives its revenge and it will seek to devour anything that poses a threat to it. If it doesn't destroy it now, it will destroy it later.

Gembound who find themselves in its good graces are welcome to seek shelter within its goopiness or to maybe be offered some food it catches before it swallows it. Don't worry, you'll know it likes you when it shares food with you and offers to protect you.
