At first glance, Rain seems to be a mostly normal mantis -- just shy of six feet tall if you push their "moth fuzz" down flat, and a little over six with it. The pale scales form into specialized scales reminiscent of hair or feathers, but in Rain's case they're mostly just useful for looking less threatening. After all, who's really afraid of something with a lion's mane made of cotton candy?
Their face is a darker blue, with two compound eyes in a deep purple in the usual place. Three eyes in the same purple sit in the center of their forehead -- they almost look like markings, until they start blinking. Antennae spring up off the top of their head, useful for detecting changes in moisture and smells in the air. More than that, their face is glassy -- it is covered in careful but flexible chitin like that of their fur, allowing for minimal movement -- enough to blink, eat, and talk with a slight impediment, but not really enough to show much facial expression. Their mandibles somewhat resemble human teeth, especially from a distance, but are capable of reaching out up to six inches in front of their chitinous prison. They're designed for crushing the bones of small animals, but are decently precise and can be used for slightly rougher tasks than teeth might be (albeit with a bit more strength behind them). Then comes their torso -- where one might expect to find the fleshy stomach of a centaur, they instead have a hard, chitinous carapace in the same blue as her face, but this time with pretty white spots placed on her like pox scars. Her armor protects her, and unusually, most of her vital organs are tucked away in this faux-thorax rather than in her longer and more elegant abdomen. And speaking of her abdomen. Her legs, arm-scythes, and her abdomen are all made of the same horrid material -- a thick, tough hide and multiple layers of thick, strong muscle. Her joints are extremely flexible and allow for a wide range of movement, in addition to being firm and heavy because of that same dense muscle. Her abdomen has some of the larger organs that could not fit elsewhere inside, and the taught skin stretched over her scythes bends awkwardly rather than actually cutting through anything. Finally, she has a thin, faux cape made of skin along her back -- it starts at the base of her thorax and drapes politely over her abdomen like wings might. It is flexible and delicate, and Rain generally views it as a nuisance (albeit one that she guards jealously). While it wouldn't hurt if the skin itself were damaged, tearing it away from the body altogether certainly would. She is capable of flipping it up over her head to act as a shawl or cloak. Personality
Rain is fascinated by movement and by shapes. The inner workings of a Gembound's mind is interesting, sure, but not hardly as enrapturing as the flex of muscle and tendon over bone, wrapped up in a tight bundle of skin, taught and ready to cut through. The variety in the size, shape, and strength of the Gembound in the caves fascinates Rain, and she wants nothing more than to keep a living record of all the different systems of anatomy she can find. A new curiosity is just that, and she has a tendency to try and collect specimens for further study -- both living and dead.
Furthermore, Rain is calm, and not just because her chitinous face allows for minimal showing of emotion. She is not easily startled, and certainly is not easily scared. She is level-headed, even in a crisis, and can always find a way to explain the thought that has gone into a decision -- hers or someone else's. Every move is carefully planned, and nothing she does is an accident -- or, at least, that's what she would like you to believe. She makes an excellent mediator among her family, though, and an even more excellent diplomat outside it (or, she would, if she had any interest in talking to other Gembound). Rain's moral code can seem ridiculous or even nonexistent at times, simply because she does not seem to consider walking, talking, breathing Gembound to be any different than Lessers. She treats cave insects and spiders in much the same manner she might treat another Faery, and tends to treat real Gembound in much the same way she might treat a Cave Deer or a rat. Whether because she is incapable of making a distinction or because she simply does not want to, Rain grapples with the difference and has no qualms about killing a non-insectoid or arachnid Gembound in the pursuit of science (on the whole, they're too large to eat). That's not to say she's a feral killer, though. Rain understands the importance of being a wolf in sheep's clothing, and takes great care to maintain her facade of a soft-spoken and unassuming diplomat until the last possible moment. She's not good, but she is nice. You might find warmth in her words and her actions, but that is all the more dangerous -- she's only cold and cautious around those that she's fond of. History
