Appearance
The subject in question-- The "Researcher"-- is a Hainan Black Crested Gibbon, or Nomascus hainanus. And for the main part she remains a pretty normal specimen of her species. A slender, vaguely humanoid form. 1'3" and a little stunted. Long, highly flexible arms perfect for swinging around trees. Thin, prickly golden fur. Dark bluish skin, most visible on her pointed face and opposable extremities. A midnight diamond atop her head. But what's most eye-catching about her is her ghostly pale eyes, complete with unnaturally white pupils that practically glow. Oh, and the ticking time bomb locked around her face. Growing out of her jaw and encasing her muzzle in a "second jaw" is Cerussite. A bland, easily-forgettable gemstone that glitters in light-- though the way it leaves her with just an inch of opening certainly isn't. Every breath she takes, all the food she eats, it all has to pass through a narrow, hard-to-reach slot that restricts her mouth movements, leaving her breathless, undernourished, and all-in-all not having a good time. Oh, but that's not all. Cerussite happens to be a source of white lead, a toxic mineral long since banned on our planet. And it's fragile. Normally such a gem would barely pose a threat, but with it contaminating everything she ingests from birth, a variety of bizarre and seemingly unrelated symptoms will quickly arise. Trembling. Asthma, piled atop her already slim supply of air. Frequent dizzy spells and stomach cramps. Internally her brain is under attack, too, leaving her with stunted intelligence and memory loss. The toxins strike relentlessly her first two cycles before stabilizing. But starting from her 6th cycle, she'll begin a slow, fatalistic descent. Soon it's not just tremors, but seizures. Anemia. Kidney failure. Her body can chrysalize all it wants, try and patch herself together like a broken toy, but the end result is inevitable. Without supernatural assistance, Researcher will be dead by her 11th cycle. But hey, she really does have gorgeous eyes. Personality
Researcher is a researcher. Cold, meticulous, and driven, unlike her goofy lab assistant. Right from birth her mind is full of questions. Where is she? What is life? What secrets lie in the shadows? She views the world through an objective lens of facts and numbers and wants to investigate it all. But she's not just a scientist. She's also a leader, and must act accordingly. Straight-backed, poker-faced, committed to doing the boring work instead of running around doing experiments on a whim. Not exactly the life of the party here. But when you do see her running experiments or learning new things, you can briefly see that sparkle of awe in her eyes before it fades away. And Researcher is also mortal. She doesn't fear much, but she does fear death. And with a ticking timebomb locked around her snout, it's not exactly a faraway idea. Watching her own body deteriorate terrifies her. Forgetting her own research terrifies her. She'll try every experiment, remedy and spell to alleviate her condition, all the while unaware of what's really making her sick, until the day she dies-- unless something drastic happens, that is. Researcher enjoys a close relationship with her Assistant. Her voice is breathy, muffled, and overly formal, like a grainly audio log. History
