Appearance

Rui looks about the same as he did at age 3 cycles, but there is a slight pouch of skin beneath his belly. The skin around his body is still tight, but not as youthfully as it was when he was an adolescent. His eyes are still very large, but they are now calmer, more quarter-lidded, and the dark markings around them have fully filled in. He has full control of his long, thick, dexterous tail, and his small ears are no longer too furry or large for his head. He is incredibly, visibly muscular, and large for his species, befitting of the ocelet's nickname as the miniature jaguar. About the size of a large bobcat, Rui weighs in at around 30 lbs (14 kg) and roughly 2 feet (50 cm) tall at the shoulder.

As he ages, the skin around his belly will grow looser, and his fur will grow slighly muddier (mustardier) in hue.

cycle 1

This ocelot cub looks just about like... an ocelot cub. His gem is located in the second premolar on his upper right jaw, replacing the tooth. He has short, kitten-like fur, with brilliant thick stripes and spots covering most of his dirty-cream body. They're mostly all black right now, but as he grows older, some will start to fill in with dark brown, leaving black outlines around his torso. His ears are too big for his head, and he's got big, round, cloudy blue eyes. The color will change as he grows older (as will his eyesight, which will improve) but his eyes will always be big and round, giving him excellent night vision.

Rui's fur looks messy, and if you catch him at the wrong angle it almost looks greasy. Indeed, if you were to touch it, it'd be fluffy and kitten-like. The stripes and spots along his body are all black and take up most of his fur, making him appear darker than he will be as an adult, and in areas, his coat looks a bit wavy. His eyes are a dark, pale, baby blue--he does not see particularly well, but he can get by. His tail is a little stiff, and usually sticks up high, but it is long, and he can curl the tip easily.

He was born with a bright, baby pink nose, paw pads, and gums, and they will stay that way even as he grows into an adult.

Rui has grown noticeably, and his fur is no longer curly at any point, but it now clings to his body tightly, with a few stray hairs now and then (from sloppy grooming). The banana-yellow of his coat is now lighter than it will be as he grows into a full-fledged adult, showing his youth in a subtle way. His paws are a bit big for his body, and he doesn't have fantastic control over them, flopping around playfully and clumsily. His eyes are almost the adult dark brown color now.

Rui looks almost like an adult by now, but the clumsiness of his steps and the wide look in his eyes give away his youth. His belly is a bit more tucked in than it will be when he is a full adult, and he still doesn't have perfect control of all of his dexterous details, but that isn't immediately recognizable at this point. The brown filling in parts of his coat is now completely visible, and the banana-yellow of his pelt has darkened to more of a light mustard. Truly mysterious.

to put it bluntly, rui is an asshole.

he lives out his days in blissful solitude in the thick trees of eridanus, preying on whatever is small enough to fit beneath his paws, and playing pranks on the occasional wanderer into his jungle. it's a game as much as it is a tool for his survival--rui's light tricks are meant to scare away potential dangers from his territory, but he also takes a great deal of pleasure in striking fear into the hearts of strangers.

as far as hardships go, he hasn't experienced a lot of them. he found the jungle when he was a cub and he hasn't left for almost twenty cycles. living his life in solitude has left him with little more than an instinctual distrust for other creatures, and so, should one have the rare opportunity to actually chat with him, they would find him a rather jolly, playful cat. if they could tolerate his selfish tendencies and general rough treatment of the world around him, he could be a fun pal--but don't expect him to stick around in one place for very long.

all that as it is, rui's wildcat instincts are very strong. he's very attentive of his surroundings, of potential threats, and while he is a little full of himself, he isn't stupid--he will not show up for a fight he knows he can't win. he's a powerful, deadly little thing, with speed and stealth on his side, but he is still a small cat who knows his own limits. it may not be wise to expect him to go easy on you if one were to pick a fight with him--rui is heavy-handed when he isn't defending himself or his territory--but rui isn't afraid to accept he's lost, either.

As a cub, Rui is extremely active, and difficult to satisfy. It seems he has an endless amount of energy, no doubt due to his species of wildcat. He is much more active at night, and unlike many of his species, is rather fond of company.

He's a bit of a romantic, but his introverted nature keeps him from flirting very liberally. But once you've gained his trust--and it's not an easy thing to gain--his relation is a partnership, a companionship. A relaxed thing, but a wholly genuine one.

Ocelots have very few vocalizations. Whether Rui is happy, sad, angry, or flirting, he makes the same sound, and the best description of it is of a motorcycle from the deepest depths of the underworld. Observe. He makes good use of this in pranking other gembounds as well as intimidating potential predators.

While he is generally kind, Rui is incredibly devoted to his magic and combat training, and he can be very competitive in the right circumstance. He's cunning, but can be a hard-hitter in play fights and spars, out of impulse.. and maybe a little bit just to show he can. As he matures, this will turn into a tendency to tease, rather than possibly beat the shit out of his friends (and feel bad afterwards), but for now, he's still pretty immature.

From a young age, Rui doesn't seem to act.. quite as other cubs do. He seems a little off. It shows in the slow responses, blank looks he sometimes gives in response to speech--only time will tell what this unfolds upon the tiny cub's personality.
(Rui's grip on reality is vulnerable and he has a tendency to respond to stress with dissociation. This may develop into other reality-altering stress responses as his brain develops.)
