Appearance
Tuatara closely resemble lizards but are part of the order Rhynchocephalia, which originated in the Triassic (~250 million years ago on Earth), and while the rest of their order was extinct 60 million years ago, Tuatara are the exception. They can be found in New Zealand where they are bred by conservationists today. They are studied for their close resemblance to diapsids (dinosaurs, birds, crocodilians).
They are greenish-brown and grey, measuring up to thirty-two inches from nose to tail-tip as an adult, and a weight of approximately three pounds. Males have a pronounced spiny crest made of triangular, soft folds of skin that can be stiffened for display purposes. The tuatara sheds their skin three to five times in a year as a juvenile, and only once a year as an adult. In Saul's case, this strange lizard is born with a "third eye" like the other members of his species, except his stone takes up residence where the organ should be. Once he's matured the stone is hidden beneath a layer of skin and scales as an adult, but the scales cannot hide the sickly blue illumination of the Wavellite when his magic is engaged, giving him a tiny blue-white halo effect. It is important to note that Saul's hearing is extremely under-developed, as his species has very rudimentary ears - if you can even call them ears. He is deaf to anything above 100hZ (which means he can hear: 22dB [slightly louder than the rustle of leaves] to 40dB [a quiet library].) Personality
Here's the thing - Tuatara brains fill about one-third of the space of their skulls. Its amazing, I know. Their small brains don't allow for extremely complex thought. The magic within Saul's stone might facilitate a higher-than-average IQ for his kind, but that won't translate to much when comparing him to other gembound creatures. In short: he's not as dumb as a brick but he's very close to that. His behaviors are closer to a feral animal than anything else at first, but given his exposure to the right environment and people, perhaps he could grow and change.
Saul's behavior is survival based. He could be called shy, or withdrawn, but in fact is limited by his poor hearing (and yes, that pesky brain size of his) and so, he might come across as indifferent or ignorant towards others - and that's the truth! Even if you shout in his face he's unlikely to perceive what you're saying. You have to talk to this guy quietly and calmly or he can't hear you to begin with. Good luck with that! The rest of his personality - or truly the bulk of it - will be discovered as he lives within the cave system. History
