Appearance

Scarred | Burly | So, So Tired

Even as far as her own sub-species goes, Shoal is a strange-looking owl.

When you think 'owl,' you might think of a creature that's near-silent, graceful, and ultimately beautiful. An ethereal, apex predator that glides seamlessly through the air.

Not Shoal. Shoal is a ragged-looking beast, equipped with feathers that seem a little muted of colour and that barely cling to her body. She's a little more heavy-set than most owls, too-- a little more burly, with unusually thick legs and sharp talons.

Her face is marred with an array of scars that parts the once-soft downy feathers, mangling the pink skin below and putting dents into her beak. On the left side of her beak, a thick crack threatens to split the thing in half should it receive another hit.

The rest of her body, for that matter, is littered in a web of scars. Most aren't too noticeable, they map across the skin under her feathers. You'd need to part them to see them, but some are thick enough that they've stopped new feathers from regrowing, leaving behind bumpy scar tissue in their wake.

If she were once beautiful, it's quite unclear to see. Shoal is shaggy, and somehow seems far older than she actually is with half-lidded, featherless eyes that are deep-set and hollow. Not to mention her croaking voice, and tendency to spit whatever foul words come straight to her head.

The only thing that remains of Shoal's beauty is her eyes, really. They almost gleam a beautiful golden colour-- one, her right eye, a hunk of amber gemstone that's fused into her skull beneath the skin and feathers, but it's almost difficult to tell if it's a real eye or not. One way of telling is that her actual eye glows very faintly, more noticeable in the extreme dark.

Often, Shoal does not carry herself with... well, anything. She seems exhausted, and bored, often sometimes quite literally. Her movements usually seem just a little sluggish and groggy, and she often neglects eating or washing herself.

She stinks. Just a bit.

Personality

World-Weary | Cynical | Clever

Shoal, at a first glance, might seem a little unnecessarily angry at anything and everything. The owl can come across as incredibly volatile and cruel if she's caught in the wrong place at the wrong time, often ruining first impressions. A second glance likely isn't much better-- she holds grudges long after she's forgotten why she even held them in the first place and will pick apart tiny details to get angry about.

It's not that she really means to, of course. She does have good intentions and she's a fairly selfless gembound. Shoal bears some deep-rooted desire to, simply, protect. In another life, the owl might have been some arrogant, decorated hero, though her scars and shaggy plumage seem to do enough to keep her relatively humble.

Everyone has their moments, surely.

Shoal's kind heart, although trapped under a mile of ice, shows itself best once she finds herself comfortable with someone else. An array of new sides come out of her-- someone who's darkly humorous, but also takes the time to appreciate the occasional pun. Quick-witted and playful, with a bellowing, hearty laugh that comes in abrupt peals. It's almost like meeting a completely different owl at times.

Most importantly, she seems about ready at all times to joke about herself and her own habits, typically about her... rash behaviour. Truly, when it comes to combat, Shoal simply thinks about what would be best instead of what's actually safe for herself.

Which, incidentally, might make the fact that Shoal is fairly clever and reasonable at times damn surprising. As loud and crude as she can be at times, the owl is, in fact, capable of settling herself down and coming up with actual plans and logical conclusions if given the valuable time.

Just not in combat.

History

Battle-Worn | 27 Cycles of Bullshit

Around cycle 20, Shoal hatched in Fornax. This was fine for all of three days, when the owlet was attacked by cave rats twice her size and beat her back into her chrysalis.

In cycle 24, Shoal re-emerged from her chrysalis and began exploring Fornax. In cycle 25, she was again beaten by a rat the same size as her, and went back into recovery.

In cycle 27, Shoal emerged again. In cycle 30, she went into hibernation.

In cycle 35, Shoal emerged in tunnel M. She was immediately crushed by a herd of startled cave deer and retreated back into her chrysalis to recover.

In cycle 39, the owl re-emerged once more. She explored the caves, keeping low, keeping quiet, avoiding greater and lesser gembounds alike. In cycle 42, Shoal finally settled down in Cetus.

Halfway through cycle 42, she was crushed by another cave deer while drinking from the swamp.

Shoal has re-emerged once more in cycle 48, and is completely done with Origin's shit.
