Appearance

Shrike is difficult to categorize at first glance; perhaps something out of some strange mythology. She is serpentine in general shape, and lithely built. Her movements are snakelike, as well, curving and keeping to the ground; at rest she sits up and rears back, cobra-like. Four limbs grace her frame: her forelimbs, which double as functional feathered wings, and her hind legs. All four bear bird-like toes and claws.

She displays the Oil-slicked signs of corruption across a formerly pristine frame. Her hues are a dirty grey that was once pearlescent white, with subtle hints of ivory or Oiled sheen touching her here and there, and with a darker, ragged edge to her feathers. In times of exertion, her white extremities may flush silver-blue, tinged Oily black--the color of her blood, should it ever be spilled. Her "halo" of once-shimmering, clear Diamond is now slicked darker, with a rainbow sheen, like the Oil that drips perpetually from her eyes. Her body is athletic but thinner than it should be, touched by the plague that she perpetually carries, with Blackflies often accompanying her in a sickly cloud.

Long feathers hang ragged in a mane around her neck; sharp bristles form a narrow dorsal stripe from the back of her skull to her tail tip. The wings are feathered, and unkempt fur coats her shoulders, flanks and back. Thick, pebbled skin and scutes line her tail, and her birdlike limbs are covered in scutes, as well. Large, curved spikes and smaller, thorn-like spines cover her body haphazardly, some hidden beneath the pelt and others jutting out entirely. Beneath her coat, her skin is thick to the point of being armored.

Her ears are feather-tufted and her mouth is a narrow beak--but her jaws are strong, with sideways-clamping mandibles quite capable of crushing or shearing her prey. Two small saber teeth jut down from the beak. And if her mouth should open widely, one would see a bizarre sight within: a lamprey-like ring of rows of razor teeth, extending from the roof and sides of her mouth down all sides of her fairly rigid throat.

Personality

Shrike is a false front, and always has been, but now it's a thin veneer over the urges toward Chaos.

She has a logical, calculating mind, capable of quick learning and adaptation. Her sense of humor can be a little dark, as if she doesn't quite know where to draw the line, but is usually strong regardless.

Most of her friendliness, however, is a complete facade. Shrike is an Ice Worm at heart: a predator with no need for empathy or pity. She cannot really feel these things--but she feels pleasure, enjoyment, satisfaction, fear, pain... As a result, she will hold no real attachment to morality. Shrike is somewhat morbid, carrying a fascination for fear and pain--and for inflicting it on others, thus living up to her name. Her induction into the Chaos Forge, and the corruption that came with it, has made this an almost acceptable quirk: its urges toward violence would have her snapping up the chance to go to war in a heartbeat, but thus far, the Diamond has not been called to it.

When interacting with those outside the Forge, she is likely to present her more polite false face to anyone she deems useful to her. Her bright and glittering laughter, however, is ultimately as cold and hard as her diamond stone.

History

Created when the character Ivory gave life to the a shard of the diamond gemstone of the Ice Worm of Hydra. Ivory was herself the result of Shango giving life to a Pearl bearing imprints of a Black Rhinoceros x Addax hybrid. And Shango, in turn, was the result of the diseased plaguebearing horse Khloros giving life to a Spectrolite containing a three-way hybrid of Smilodon, Nicobar Pigeon, and Thorny Devil. Shrike carries minor aspects of many of these creatures.

Later in life, Shrike challenged a member of the Hive and one of the Chaos Forge to battle for her loyalty. The Chaos creature (The Warden) won the battle, and so she joined the Forge and succumbed to Chaos's corruption.
