Appearance

Squick is a strange little thing to look at- some might say it's ugly, whilst others might say it's awfully cute. It is larval in appearance, with ten stubby little legs and a long, wrinkled body. These legs mean it isn't capable of moving very fast, but the ends bear little claws capable of clinging to rough surfaces along with skin and fabric.

It has a soft texture like velvet, and it has no bones, cabable of retaining its shape due to its absolutely tiny weight. On occasion, if relaxed or waiting, it can appear to melt into a small puddle of eyes and wrinkles. In a state like this, the dull shadow of its gem can be seen beneath its slightly-translucent skin- a tiny fragment of fluorite located in its stomach.

Its face is almost pug-like, with wrinkles and an upwards-curving mouth. It has tiny mandibles that look like jowls, and six beady little eyes, with the central pair being the largest. Whilst its eyesight is quite poor, it is capable of picking up heat signatures to identify potential hosts. It can be surprisingly expressive, with eyelids and a mouth capable of moving to show smiles or frowns. However, it will be unable to physically speak, and must rely on magic to communicate thoughts and feelings to its host. For the first cycle of its life it will communicate only through strange squelching sounds and gross squeaks.

Upon emergence, Squick will be only a centimetre in length, making it one of the smallest creatures seen in Origin cave. Freshly hatched, it will be a perfect replica of its adult self. It is the perfect size to find its way into others bodies without noticing, where it will hopefully remain, as it's completely incapable of surviving on its own. It cannot produce its own heat or take nourishment from foods that haven't been broken up already. In order to survive, it must find and be swallowed by a host creature, and become a part of them. Even as an adult it will be only an inch long.

Personality

Most of Squick's personality stems from its primary core instinct, which is to find and enter a host.

When it gains the ability to communicate through magic, hosts will find it to be chipper and eager to please- its presence alone imparting plenty of positive benefits on the host. Although it is, in essence, a parasite- feeding on its host's food and sucking their warmth- it will be more than capable of making up for its presence, and reaching a peaceful state of symbiosis. Equally, it will be capable of making its host feel unwell if they should displease it, brewing sickness and even forcibly ejecting itself by using magic to induce vomiting.

But, in general, it's in Squick's best interests to ensure that its chosen host remains healthy and happy to have it. This means that the parasite can build quite the bond with its chosen host, helping as much as it can from inside.

Squick does, however, have a competitive streak- it may often encourage its host to take risks and pick fights regardless of whether they can win, and all of this stems from an innate want to find the perfect host. Needless to say, as much as the parasite may offer good advice on whether to eat a piece of rotten fruit or drink from that stagnant pool- it cannot always be relied on to do what's best for the host. It may even abandon one host in favour of another and each time it changes hosts, puts itself in very real danger of everything in the outside world.

It is reckless, in a way- and at times, blind to all but its own desires.
