Appearance

Canine, alien, bizarre; hulking and lanky.

The son of a black mastiff and the Master Vargas, The Sentinel bears a strange and ominous overall appearance: nine feet of lean muscle, jet black, capable of long-limbed languid steps on all fours or brutal bipedal movement. Spines jut out here and there--from neck, shoulders, forelimbs--and the rigid, spine-like ears, barely capable of movement, double as structures to support additional eyes. Scale-like structures form a hood around its neck that protects but also flares, like a cobra's hood, covering thick jaw and neck muscles. Fingers and toes are tipped with massive claws, and the staring eyes--two on the face, four more on the 'ears'--are a ghostly blue-white that hardly seem to blink. Two additional ghostly blue pits tip the ears near the top.

The gemstone is a black Onyx corrupted by Oil, with sheens of violet, pink and green iridescence, embedded in his sternum. It is streaked through with veins of true Oilstone, courtesy of Rrevalk's direct appearance before him. Other effects of the Creator's visit include a need to seek out magical sources to sap them for his own strength, and a single blue eye on the main blade of his now magically-linked halberd--quite near to the haft--through which the Sentinel can see. His voice, when it comes, is a bass and rasping rumble.

The Sentinel holds himself not with Vargas' overbearing, straightforward nature but with the aloof, eerie stillness that its predecessor Black once held. When he does move, it can be chaotically unexpected, violence erupting from what seemed like peace.

With Corruption come a few peculiarities. The Sentinel is forever shrouded in thick darkness and smoky shadows due to his intrinsic grasp of Encompassing Darkness and Energy of the Void. This magic also passively gives him perfect vision in pitch black, but he is blinded by bright light; and from time to time, he sees the world of Void around him, rather than reality.

Personality

The Sentinel was hatched into his role, given a title but not a name, and taught that standing his entire life beside the breathing Aperture of Draco was his purpose. He has accepted this dutifully with the same sense of guardian's responsibility that Black held, taking his single task quite seriously.

Given his basic framework of chaotic magic element, Master single parent, and dog's heart and soul, the Sentinel has mostly formed into a single-minded and potentially dangerous warden of Draco. He is likely to remain obedient to Vargas, until and unless he develops values that he holds to be greater than this obedience. He is attentive, keeping watch on all who pass and all that they do. He is a curious being, holding interest in visitors, stranger, enemies and allies. This curiosity is generally benign, but on occasion it may become instead dangerous: a curiosity as to what a strange Gembound's bones look like may for example result in the Sentinel attempting to simply open up the stranger to find out. Given his Corruption, the Sentinel may waver unpredictably between either option.

The Sentinel, stuck as it is at a door for most of his life, is often quite lost within his own mind. While this has detached it somewhat from reality, at times he is deeply thoughtful instead of simply blank. When he can be induced to speak at length, and when his limited ability to express himself allows, he can show surprising insight.

Another surprise may be his genuine protectiveness: though it has yet to be challenged, he holds a fierce guardian spirit for Draco and in particular the chrysalises of any children growing there. This stems from an early interaction in which magic caused him to hallucinate his failure in doing so: he is determined not to let it truly happen.

History

- The black guardian mastiff, Black--one of the very first wave of Origin's Gembound to awaken--mutates into a bipedal fighter and is Corrupted, eventually perishing protecting others in the Trial of Hydra - Darkness.

- The gemstone is returned by request to Master Vargas, interested in seeing Corruption amongst the Gembound; this is revived to become The Sentinel. Black's halberd is returned to it.
