Appearance

Valeria, as a newborn gemling, looks something like a pink, hideous little gargoyle. Hairless and very tiny, for the first cycle of her life, she will pretty helpless, relying on others for food and warmth. Though she will rapidly grow a short, fuzzy, mouse-brown coat, with a silvery gray underside, to keep her warm, her wings will remain useless for flight until her second cycle.

To put it bluntly, Valeria is rather unsightly compared to most creatures, though some might argue that she is so ugly, she's cute. Regardless, her form is quite strange as far as bats go. As a vampire bat, her body is specialized in drinking blood, and only blood. Thanks to a fast metabolism and very little fat, if Valeria doesn't drink half her weight in blood every 72 hours, (that's 48 hours longer than her earthly counterpart, thanks to her gem) she could die of starvation. Thankfully, some facial modifications help her obtain it. True to her species' namesake, she has fangs and razor sharp incisors that slice through soft skin, though, the bite is relatively painless. A grooved lower lip and anticoagulating saliva assists with her drinking habits, helping her to lap up blood more efficiently with her long tongue. Though her species specializes in mammals, anything with a pulse will do.

Valeria's wrinkly, pink face has leaf like protrusions that come from her squashed snout. It can detect heat from veins, not unlike a snake's pits. Her big, pointy ears, while not as exaggerated as in some species, has excellent hearing, and like all bats, Valeria uses oral echolocation to navigate, though she can see pretty well with her black, beady eyes too. She is rather tiny, roughly the size of a teacup, and weights only 2 ounces. Her gem is a small piece of faceted garnet the size of a pebble. It is a lovely maroon in color and is embedded in the center of her chest, however, it is not attached to any bone. A part of it can be seen sticking out of her fur.

With well developed, padded thumbs and strong wrists, her wings are specially designed to carry her weight, not only in the air, but on the ground, and they are actually stronger than her legs. She can creep, crawl, climb, and bound across the floor, even as newborn. Fully grown, her wingspan is 7 inches, and its leathery membrane is darker than the rest of her body, stretching between her elongated, bony fingers, all the way down to her ankles. Because she puts her weight on her wings Valeria always has a hunched-backed posture, giving her a somewhat ghoulish appearance.

Personality

She may have a face only a mother can love, but Valeria is so much more than that. Despite her parasitic feeding habits, Valeria tries to give way more than she takes. Kind and generous, her altruistic nature sees her helping others, no matter the cost and even without hope of reward. She is pure of heart, and constantly bleeds innocence and sincerity.

Even as an adult, Valeria remains childlike, seemingly uncorruptied and full of wonder, but also extremely naive. She may be good natured, but she is gullible. It is horribly easy to take advantage of her good will. Socially awkward, she stumbles through interactions like a bumbling idiot, and is painfully aware of this. She tends to be meek, not wanting to draw attention to herself, and has a hard time saying "no". Valeria's, sensitive, bleeding heart is too big for her body. She easily sympathises others, but it doesn't take alot to get through her thin skin. Her feelings are just as fragile as her bones, and those who are too harsh with them will send her away, weeping.

Valeria has an uncharacteristic fasination with many stranges things that one would not expect a sweet, little bat like her would be interested in, one of those things being prokaryotic diseases. It is unsettling to learn about, as they seem to come out of the blue, but regardless, Val's heart is in the right place. She is intruged by deadly dieases and such not because of the suffering and pain they cause, but because she wants to find cures. She believes that she must do the dirty work to spar others from it in an act of selflessness. She understands that sacrifices and risks must be made, but ultimitely, she does it for the greater good. But what she doesn't forsee is that she has the potential to become awfully misguided.
