Appearance

even when he reaches his full size at 4 cycles, vega is relatively short for a wolf, measuring a little over 2 and a half feet at his shoulder--a few inches taller than the average malamute. his degraded emotional & mental state has left him with a floppy, tired way of moving and near-constant bloodshot eyes from his poor sleeping habits. he looks exhausted at almost all times, as if even breathing is a laborious activity for him.

the quartz of his jaw bone protrudes noticeably from his chin and beneath his maw. the pain stopped when his bones stopped growing, but it continues growing out at a slower pace, growing longer and heavier each few cycles.

past

As a pup, Vega looks awkward, almost batlike in appearance. His ears are big and radial, and sometimes they even flop a little bit under their own weight. Though the round puppy is a Mexican wolf, he looks a little more like a dingo than anything right now, sparsely haired to protect him from hot summer heats. It only serves to make him look a little silly in the caves, though.

His coat is a muddy mix of dark and sandy browns, blacks and greys. As he matures, he will grow to have a pretty white underbelly, sparse underfur making his coat appear silky smooth, and a sandy coat, topped with a dark gray cape over his body. His back is blackened, white flecks like plumage giving it a "starry" appearance. His eyes are a pale, cloudy gray, almost like that of his gemstone, but for his first and second cycles they appear as a deep, watery blue.

Though outwardly unseen for now, Vega's entire lower jaw is made of a cloudy quartz, including his teeth. It will continue to grow as he matures to fit the rest of his skull, however as irregularly as quartz tends to grow, irregular spikes may appear around some of his teeth as he grows, and jagged edges of quartz may begin to protrude from the skin of his jaw. If he's particularly unlucky, he may find it difficult to move his jaw one day before he reaches 4 cycles old, as the quartz around his joint begins to grow out.

As he grows into his second and third cycles, Vega's full coat begins to fill in, covering up the awkward Shepherd-puppy look of his first cycle. His ears become stronger and his head large to accommodate them, fur growing in more noticeably around the edges of his ears, one thin layer at a time.

At 3 cycles, he is nearly his adult size and his coat has largely grown in, but it's patchy and bland, the defined cape on the top of his body shadowy and brown-tinted instead of the sharp, almost green in contrast blacks and grays of his adult form. The adolescent's coat is uneven in places, thin at times, making him very much appear as a sub-adult.

The milky quartz crystals that emerged during his second cycle continues to grow, painfully spreading out the skin around it as the jagged spines establish their shape. From time to time, this causes his difficulty eating, but it does not show in his weight; only in the sheen of his fur, the stiffness in his shoulders. Symptoms of stress are more visible than absolute lack of food, as Vega does not need to eat every day.

Sometimes, the skin of his lower jaw, and rarely his mouth, will visibly bleed for a few days. The stretching of skin is painful, but slow, and Vega takes great care to avoid infection.

Personality

cycles of loneliness have taken their toll on vega. although he is still a kind, patient soul, his frustrations about being isolated for so long have turned inward and vega has quite a plethora of issues.

first of all, he does not think very highly of himself. he is needy for attention and affection and honestly pretty socially undeveloped. he has trouble sleeping and often goes for hours upon hours on end awake. he has fashioned himself something of an observer at this point.

A wolf without a pack is a stunted thing, indeed. Vega is a smart, observant little thing, a panic in his paws and a patient, occupied look in his deep blue eyes. He is as naive with his trust as puppies come, but he doesn't do anything without thinking about it first.

But all that time spent watching and listening and pulling puzzle pieces together in his head, a puppy is bound to have questions. And oh, does Vega have questions. Questions he's dying to know the answer to. His wide, wondrous eyes are almost an eerie blank when he tilts his head, awaiting--and the simplicity of a puppy comes back into form. He isn't aware his simple, prompt-and-response attitude might make some gembounds uncomfortable.

Vega is a rather social creature, despite all of this. Being a wolf doesn't make it feel very natural to be alone, and he has the instinct to stick with a family, even if that means creating his own. Now, that isn't to say he's very good at staying in one place. Vega is a migrating creature, and he likes to move around. Perhaps that's part of his curiosity; perhaps it would be best if whatever "family" he makes feels the same.

Somewhere in between all of this, Vega has always carried a bit of paranoia inside of him. Off and on, he can be impulsive, and has always struggled with the impulse to isolate himself in pursuit of self-preservation. He doesn't dare speak of his anxiety, but with the right knowledge and caught at a bad time, Vega's instability (with reality as well as in regards to his anxiety) could put him at risk of some serious manipulation.

As a pup, Vega is as playful a child as any. He really prefers adventure and exploration, though, to sparring or anything that requires staying still for very long.
