Appearance
He is a strange creature—a novabestia as he calls himself—from the start. Vinea appears as something trying desperately to imitate something more familiar to the Gembound. A hyena, changing coats with the seasons, with features unknown to such a creature. Enormous orange eyes stand out against his face, shifting to blue as the caves cool, watching from above. Hyper-sensitive whiskers track every surface's curve as he moves, clinging to ceilings with dexterous, webbed digits. When he cannot see, his whiskers show the way. The hybrid's mouth is monstrous, splitting bottom mandibles lined internally with far too many teeth. Stubby horns protrude from his crown, never really showing many signs of growth. Imitating these horns are spikes from his shoulder blades, shifting up and down and often flattened against his back, obscuring the webbing that connects keratin and skin. Webbing runs down his throat and stomach, also often flattened against himself, pressed into obscurity. What cannot be hidden, however, are the strange appendages at his sides. Webbed arms incapable of flight act as gliders, carrying his hollow-boned body great distances. At the tip of his long, furry tail, lie another sort of rudder, a hooked bit of keratin with feelers around it.
During the warm cycles, he is a rich and tawny color with prominent black spotting and white undersides. His bioluminescence is a rich crimson color, decorating the tips of his horns, fins, and whiskers; painted in strange markings along his limbs and tail's tip. As the caves cool, his coat sheds and gives way to a paler hue and his bioluminescence becomes colored blue by a natural sort of antifreeze. Fully grown, he will be a behemoth compared to many of the caves' denizens—standing five feet three inches tall at his shoulders. But, of course, he is light as a feather, only weighing about fifty pounds at his healthiest. At emergence, however, Vinea will be the size of a standard hyena puppy and weigh just two pounds. His coat will have yet to lighten and define itself, rendering him a rich, chocolate color. Even his bioluminescence will be absent up until his second cycle of life. Personality
Strange, bewitched and seemingly not quite Gembound. One may describe him as something right out of the gothic, perhaps with vague influences drawn from the true faeryfolk of Scottish lore (but, yet again, without). Vinea's true nature is rather obscure, masked behind a rather unnerving set of behavioral patterns in which he tends to observe from afar, greedy- and bug-eyed with slavering jaws. Looking at him in the face gives off an unsettling air of dread. Do not trust it. All you can trust to slip from the creature's tongue are honest deals and trades --- he will not spoil his own offerings. To do so is a means to one's own end in a serially materialistic mindset. In that same vein, it's worth noting that Vinea is a kleptomaniac, obsessive over acquiring the smallest, most superficial items with little reason other than just to do it for the momentary rush of adrenaline. Being unable to steal said thing often brings about anxiety, nerves, and a general poor mood. Neither of which are desirable, as he'll just start cackling out an eldritch cacophony.
Aside from the more personal characteristics dictating his behavior, Vinea's a somewhat respectable friend to have once you've gotten past the oddities surrounding him. Subverting all expectations about his materialistic nature, he's a rather generous friend. It's touching when he bestows a gift upon close and trusted companions. "In exchange for their tolerance," he says quietly as he offers forth the gift. Ever living in deals. Additionally, he is intrigued by clairvoyance and frequently attempts to tell of the past, present, and future. The creeping mycelia is omniscient, offering views beyond the known. They will end up being his medium and greatest object of study. History
