Appearance

As of finishing Quest: The Black City (3), Whale has mutated Lightsting-esque bioluminescent markings on her sides and flippers.

Whale is downsized from her Earth cousins in order to live in Origin Cave. Still, she is no small creature - as a calf, she is approximately 7 feet long, but when she is fully grown, she will reach a length of 25 feet (Black City mutated) w/o tail. Her pectoral flippers are huge and winglike, as is characteristic of humpback whales: they are approximately 1/3 of her total body length!

Whale's top half is solid black, but her belly is mottled black and white. The underside of her tail is mostly white, with a thin black border running along the edges. Where the two tail flukes meet in the middle, the black thickens in a >< shape, where the middle part is black and the parts where the sideways Vs open are white. While the underside of her flippers are mostly white with just a few black spots, the top side is black where they are close to her body. Toward the tips, they become white with large black speckles near the border between black and white.

Her head is covered in round lumps called tubercles, which are actually hair follicles. Her gem, a lapis lazuli, replaces one of these. Barnacles grow on her head and along the front edge of her flippers. She does not actually have a hump on her back; the name for her species comes from the way they arch their backs before dives.

As a baleen whale, Whale is a filter feeder. Ventral pleats - grooves that run from her jaw all the way to her stomach - expand like an accordion when she feeds, accommodating enormous amounts of food and water. The water is expelled through the pair of blowholes on her back. In order to live underwater, Whale can hold her breath for up to half an hour and dive up to 500 feet deep. (She sleeps by taking short naps while floating at the surface.)

Personality

Fearless and bold, Whale is always ready to stand up for those in need! She doesn't hesitate to defend Gembound weaker than her, even if they have nothing to offer her return or if the odds of winning are slim. In her mind, if you do something with good and just intentions, then it's worth fighting for no matter what the possible consequences. She has a strong "do no harm" mentality most of the time. Give her the trolley problem and she'd throw herself in front it before even dreaming of dreaming of sacrificing anyone else. Tell her to harm a single person to rid the world of suffering and she'd watch the world burn rather than touch that person - or, more likely, embark on some hopeless quest to find a third path.

Unwilling though she might be to lay a finger - or rather, flipper - on the average Gembound, she judges those who have been cruel quite harshly. If someone has done something bad, then they need to be punished; it doesn't matter whether they've changed or not. Of course, though, Gembound who haven't changed have likely inflicted more cruelties, necessitating more severe consequences. Whale tends to hold grudges, even for small things, which can make her rather petty sometimes.

Whale loves to let her imagination run wild, making up stories and asking to hear stories from others. She is fascinated by Origin Cave: its past, its beautiful natural phenomena, and its magic. Music is one of her favorite things in the world. Whale could sing to herself for hours on end, but where's the fun in that? She prefers listening to the music of others, or joining them in a group chorus.

Whale is more than a bit of a show-off, always looking for opportunities to demonstrate her skills or knowledge. She is full of competitive spirit and isn't very good at gracious defeat, but she is determined and willing to put in whatever work is needed to improve. However, it's easy to distract her from that work with the prospect of a new diversion. Whale is proud, and it's very difficult for her to set aside that pride. She doesn't like admitting her mistakes. She prefers to trust in her own instincts and feelings for what's right than yield to others' advice.
