Appearance
Red-crowned cranes are named for a patch of bare red skin on top of their heads, but Zhusha's is replaced by his gem: a piece of vibrant red cinnabar. With cinnabar being one of the densest gemstones, it is lucky that Zhusha's is not particularly large nor thick. He holds his head tall and proud, and will grow to a height of five feet (1.5 m) with a wingspan of eight feet (2.5 m). Everything about his bearing is regal and dignified, and his eyes -- dark brown, almost black -- have a determined light to them.
When fully grown, most of Zhusha's feathers will be a pure, snowy white. His secondary feathers are an deep, inky black: this is the area near his tail when his wings are tucked, but show as a black stripe across the back of his wings that cuts off suddenly near the tips when in flight. (Look up "red-crowned crane in flight" for examples.) His face and neck are also black, though white feathers extend down the top of his neck, starting from behind the eyes and ending at about the middle of his neck. His long, grey-black legs are well suited to wading through water to find food, and his sharp beak, a dark green-brown, lets him stab prey. After surviving the Trial of Hydra, Zhusha has acquired Spire Spider venom, making his bite extremely painful and magicka-draining. He has also acquired opposable thumb-toes on his feet. Personality
Zhusha is driven to create. Whether the creation is artistic, whimsical, cultural, or useful, he wants to make it and he will succeed. Failure only makes him more determined. He does not bother to stop and feel ashamed after failing, but future attempts may include quite a bit more anger. Although he loves to share the wonder of his creation, he does so on his own terms. Those who demand or take without asking will be rejected outright, and will become an enemy in his eyes. Although his default mood is calm, that could change very quickly. Zhusha is quick to anger at a perceived insult or injustice. He is bold, proud, and hates being ordered around: not necessarily a good combination of traits. At the same time, he feels any emotion very strongly, not just anger. Humor, grief, joy, resentment, love, pity: any of these are possible. He cares deeply, not only for his own friends and family but also for the average Gembound, including those weaker than himself and those in need. Or maybe it's for an imagined ideal of the average Gembound: he might find many Gembound to be disagreeable or distasteful, and therefore not care about them very much. Zhusha's gem, cinnabar, contains a mercury compound. Short-term skin contact probably will not cause poisoning, nor will eating a very little tiny bit (but why would you eat a rock seriously), but inhaling it as a powder or heating it up and inhaling the mercury vapors released can give you big poisoning real quick. His own symptoms include very minor hearing loss/periodic itching first 4 cycles, which will increase to mild hearing loss, skin rashes, and minor muscle weakness beyond that. |
