me when i'm normal - Howlite-T-One - Jul 13 2026
It'd been a few days since Howlite had hatched. Now, she was having a little wander, more out of curiosity than any particular need or task. She'd found an ominously dark tunnel and, at the end of it, a door into a dusty room full of bones. Howlite wasn't very certain what to think of it, but she had a walk around anyway.
It wasn't long until she came across the bone shelters. She didn't know, of course, that once upon a time they'd been used to house people who'd rebelled, and that they'd been hunted by masters and overseers. They were just funny little structures that she decided would look a lot better on the ground.
She reached for her magic, but found nothing. "Phooey," the creature lamented, nudging at a bone 'pillar' with her forefoot.

The dinosaur had lingered. It'd struggled to learn that the rest of this place wasn't like Lacerta. It'd really struggled. Everything here was smaller, delicate.
So, it watched. It'd lingered back when it'd caught sight of this fluffy thing, ducking behind the bones to watch her, squinting through the dark and straining its eyes.
Thankfully, it didn't take a genius to figure out the bone pillar was upsetting her, because if anyone came here looking for brains, they'd be sorely disappointed. Even a zombie would go hungry.
Well, it couldn't just sit there while it futility attacked the bone pillar, could it? It would show this fluffy person how to be strong how to be mighty so she too may survive Lacerta.
It charged from its hiding spot, bodily crushing the bone pillar as it slammed against it. Perhaps, the pillar didn't need as much force as the dinosaur had put into it. The small structure exploding into bone fragments as it threw itself at it, sending dust flying out.
Yes! Yes! Now the fluffy thing would know how to kill! Destroy!

"Oh," said the howlite as a dinosaur came out of nowhere and exploded into the structure, dusty, long-dead bones and gemstones flying everywhere. She felt... disappointed. She'd really wanted to do that herself. But, she was polite. "That was really good."
... but it felt nasty to lie.
"Maybe, um, next time, you could ask before doing that..?" Howlite said a little more sheepishly. "I didn't get a chance to try breaking it and now it's all gone. But it's okay."
There were plenty of bone structures still around, at least, but now Howlite had sort of lost the desire to want to wreck more things. Not if someone was so much better at it than her. "Is your overseer here?" She asked, assuming everyone had one.

Brother blinked owlishly at the fluffy gembound as it was gentle parented. Once she was done talking and asking it questions, it turned its head towards the destruction.
Ask before attacking? But that would give away the element of surprise. It didn't understand...
She was making noises at it and why did it understand what these noises meant? That required too much thought, so it chose not to think about it.
Instead, it leaned down to grasp a bone in one clawed 'hand', then turned it and set it upright. Balanced within the rubble, just a single pathetic bone sticking upright. There. It had remade the tower.
It looked back at the fluffy gembound, then pointed towards its recreation of the pillar.
It grumbled, a low sound in its throat, dewlap wobbling.

Howlite blinked back. He wasn't talking back. "Do you--" she'd started, but the dinosaur turned and started putting the bone back in place. She blinked again, stepping closer. "Oh. Thank you."
At least she could try again.
This time, when she reached for her magic, it responded. The ground shook beneath her paws and the dinosaur's talons and the limp pillar tumbled back over onto the ground with a clatter. It wasn't... quite the same as it would have been if she'd done it unassisted, but she appreciated the effort, at least.
Her head bent, sniffing at the bone as it rolled onto the ground. Then, Howlite looked back to Brother. "Can't you talk?" She asked quizzically. "I'm Howlite-T-One. What's your designation?"

Yes! Yes! More destruction! The Howlite-thing had learned to destroy, he was so proud. She was learning so quickly. It was certain it could also do the pebble wobble thing too... Maybe if it stomped its feet hard enough.
Oh. She was talking to it again. Why did she want it to talk? It didn't see how that would help them have fun breaking things. It was already having fun.
It leaned down again to grasp the bone, setting it back upright once more in the pile of rubble and dutifully reset it for her.
Eventually, it grunted, "Brother." The words didn't quite leave its mouth right; it was slightly garbled, more of a growl than anything else. Then it immediately decided that this was exhausting and boring. Not nearly as fun as wrecking things.
So, it looked pointedly at the Howlite again, then the bone sat upright.

Her head turned, watching the bone get put upright. Ah, so they were doing this. He seemed to like watching her knock it over, though. "Brother," she echoed, and decided this was a fine enough designation. Maybe different overseers named their minions different things. Maybe a Brother was someone that helped others wreck things.
Fair enough.
"Who's your overseer?" She asked again, genuinely wanting to know. "Mine is Tectus. She's really cool." The cat-thing pulled into her magic again, and another, weaker rumble shook the earth, tipping the bone back over onto the ground.
She batted at it with a paw for good measure. "Do they live here?"

Internally, Brother groaned. Why did this Howlite-thing want to know so much? Why did she like talking to much? And what was an Overseer.
With a sigh, it shook its head. Making a short grunt, which may have meant 'no'. It had its pack, and it didn't need someone to oversee it or whatever an Overseer did.
Wordlessly, it reset the bone again for the Howlite-thing. Why did she have to speak? Was this not already fun? It shook its head again. Hopefully that would be enough to answer both her questions.

"You're very quiet," Howlite said, watching Brother. She couldn't imagine not wanting to talk. It was such a wonderful thing!
The bone was reset and Howlite was already on the job. The magic was stronger again, rumbling through the ground and sending the bone clattering once again. It was then that a thought occured to her-- the cat gasped and looked up at Brother with her eyes wide like saucers, dark pupils bloated.
"Did your overseer forbid you from talking?" She whispered, scandalized by the idea. How cruel! "Did you do something wrong?"

Brother blinked as it looked at the Howlite-thing. Why would someone forbid it from speaking? All these questions were beginning to make its head hurt. Why did she want it to think about these things?
It shook its head again. Then another time for the last question. "No." It grunted.
Once again, it set up the bone to be knocked over, idly wondering when it would be its turn again. He huffed through its nostrils before speaking once more. "Talk boring." It grumbled with all the elegance of a caveman.
It was feeling exhausted by this already.
