Friend or Foe? - Mosi - Jul 25 2016

God of the Stars

Hmph, what a humiliating defeat. And at the hands of a bird, no less! It burned him up that that stupid chick had been able to scurry away into the bone pile while he'd been powerless to do anything. Even the bone clasped in his jaws did nothing to improve his mood! The only thing he wanted in his jaws was the chick so that he could rip it apart!

Long legs ate up the ground as the canine-creature stalked across Orion, even the stars in the sky --his creations-- did nothing to improve his mood. The other thing that didn't improve his mood was that his Moon was nowhere around! He needed her to soothe his bruised ego and to help him plot his revenge on that stupid chick!

Mosi's head tossed as he threw the bone away, only to pounce on it moments later and chomp it with his fangs. He had to remember to be careful, despite this vessel's shortcomings it had surprisingly strong jaws and could easily snap the bone in half. This was to be a present for his Moon, not a chew toy for himself.

There were plenty of gembounds around for him to rip apart and use to vent.

Just as this thought passed his mind the creature's ears twitched at a new sound while his four eyes focused somewhere just behind the throne. Was that... heat he detected? Hmm... Curiousity took over him as he walked forward. Would he have a new chew toy? Or something better?

It was about time to find out...

Far above Mosi's head, well relatively speaking considering he was a quadrupedal beast, a chrysalis stirred. Hanging from the limb of a branch which had gnarled considerably, most likely to support the weight of the crystal at its edge as they both slowly grew. At some point in its development the weight of the rock caused the limb to invert, and now small twigs were curled around it in a supportive basket. The branch trembled slightly, as its charge rattled. It looked as if there was an angular fruit growing, a pleasing lavender tainted with splashes of white which could've been confused for mold from the ground below. The mineral cocoon continued to tremble subtly, as the contents inside stirred. After all these months the slow growth was reaching its end, but the strain to come into this world was harder than anticipated thanks to the foliage outside.

Finally the first microscopic fissure erupted in the surface of the crystal. The sound of cracking rock left the tree, distorted by the canopy that engulfed it and changing into some indescribable ruckus outside. Slowly but surely the cracks widened, branching off at organic angles and creating a web on the purple and white surface they marred. Below this stone, purple dust and shards would slowly descend in waves. This created the sound of pebbles falling in between cries of rupturing stone.

The sound of cracking and breaking echoed around him but from where? On a whim he looked up, four eyes focused on the bright gemstone above him. Ah, so that's where the sound was coming from. The chrysalis seemed rather tiny, it would probably behold some snack-sized morsel. He could feel his jowls begin to salivate with the mere thought of biting into something tasty but he would hold back. Perhaps he could make use of this newborn in some other way that didn't involve making a meal out of it.

The dust and shards dropped down on his snout, annoying but otherwise unharming him. With a snort he pawed at his muzzle, removing the debris from the dark and glittering surface. He could see nothing at first but surely there was something living in there. He hadn't seen it pop out but here was the signs of life. "Art thou living or not?" His voice was thoughtful as if he were questioning himself more than the mystery being within.

Darting out of the opening in the crystal at the sound of a strange creature, the small gembound looked like a fuzzy snake as it moved pressed squat against the branch into the folliage. "Living or not?" Mimicked a soft voice, with an lilting hiss that one might expect more from a snake than whatever this youth was. Large black eyes stared down at Mosi, they looked like they were popping out of the poor creatures skull, probably taking up more room than the runt's brain. "I am living or not? Are you living or not?" His ears twitched, rotating at the slightest sounds in the room. Occasionally there would be a loud noise that cause the creature's head to bob towards it, but he always kept it cocked so that the focus of his vision was the larger beast down below the tree.

Curiously, the civet shifted his posture to sit upright. In a display of his own megalomania, or perhaps an innate awareness of that of the hound below him, the civet lurched forward and swung a small limb to the side. His movements were swift, and his coloration made it hard to see what he was doing beneath the shade of the leaves, but shortly after doing so small chunks of crystal would rain from above as he battered the chrysalis from which he emerged and caused a shower of stones below.

Mosi stared upwards at the tiny thing as it darted outwards from its crystal home. It had such a tiny little heat signature and a strange hissing voice like some sort of reptile. The canine-like creature snorted as it mimicked him with its simplistic questions. The canine shook his head, deciding to indulge these childish games. Was he not to take on the roll of god? Was he not to garner followers to help he and his sister build up this place? "Yes. Thou art living as am I. If we were not then we would not be speaking with each other, silly mortal." His long tail brushed the ground as he rose up on his hind legs in an attempt to snuffle at the thing with his nose... until it shifted and dropped a few crystals on Mosi's unsuspecting head.

With an irritated huff of air he dropped back on all fours and lashed his tail impatiently. "Cease thou running!" He lucked upwards to find that the thing had changed locations. If not for the fact that his heat stood out like a sore thumb he probably would have lost the civet but as it was he easily swiveled his muzzle around to look at the thing dead-on. "Doth thou have a name? A calling by which I am to refer to you as?"

The civet cocked his head at the question, his mind beginning to actuate. "I am mortal? Are you mortal?" The small creature seemed to have no awareness of its own mental processes. "I am living? I am not mortal." Every word that the beast below said seemed to be transient in the youngster's mind. Once again he whacked crystalline debris down below. At least he seemed easily amused and mindlessly obedient, he wasn't running anymore after all.

With a mighty leap the creature spread its legs in the air. Hitting the larger beast in the scruff and then clinging on for dear life to pull himself right, the civet found itself perched on the back of the beast. "I am living. You are mortal." He posited into the canine-like creature's ear.

The thing above him seemed to have no idea of what he was saying, mimicking without any actual sense of the words. "This vessel is mortal but my soul is not." Yes, this vessel with which he was currently confined too had its limitations like its current size and the powers... or lack thereof. He found himself unable to craft his beautiful stars and go without ever needing to eat or breathe. He could also feel pain, setbacks but not anything that he couldn't deal with by training. All of this distracted from the simple fact of... why was he humoring this creature? "Desist!" He yelled as more shards rained down from above, causing him to lift a paw and shield his eyes from the debris.

Then, he felt something upon his nape. He didn't even have to turn to see what it was, his strangely placed eyes allowed him to see clearly the thing upon his back while his head was still turned straight. "In the next realm we will both not be. Keep sitting on mine back and you will visit there very soon! Remove thineself!" He demanded, eyes glaring back at the strange feline-like thing. It felt strange having those tiny claws clinging into his fur and not to mention he didn't exactly appreciate being sat upon like some sort of lowly steed. It wasn't as if this one was some sort of emissary or even a pet...

Or could it be?

Closing his eyes, the small civet leaned forward, placing a palm atop the larger creature's skull, hunched so that his maw was practically invading the other's ear. For a moment a deep growl resonated inside of the civet's throat, but instead of getting louder or higher in pitch it sounded as if it was instead getting further away. "Remove thineself! This vessel is mortal, and in the next realm it will not be! Desist or you will visit there very soon! The words were warped and guttural, yet coherent. They were an amalgamation of Mosi's own, but sounded like neither of the creatures who spoke them. The sound appeared to be coming from the tree, which was clearly empty, and yet the words were spoken. They were menacing, the inflection was definitely from Mosi's speech, but the words themselves did not bear Sid's lilting tone or hissing utterances.

For his part, the civet seemed quite pleased with his trick, leaning back on his hind legs and clapping his paws together in a delighted fashion. "I am a soul? Yes. Living and not." The civet concluded, his journey for understanding what he was seemingly complete. With a sage nod he returned to his four legged posture on the caniod's scruff.

The smaller creature did not leave his back in fact he did something else altogether. A tiny paw was placed on his head and its muzzle was right in his ear, the sensation of someone else invading his space besides his sister caused his hackles to raise and a growl to slowly form in his throat. He was also prepared to turn viciously and snatch the creature off his back but stopped when something incredible happened.

The creature mimicked him again but this time there was something else to it... a bit of magick. The creature was speaking but it was in his own voice and not spoken from his own mouth. It seemed to be coming from the tree but undeniably it was from the civet. Mosi stared, ears twitching as he tried to make sense of this. His twisted mind worked to put two and two together until finally he made a connection... Perhaps this was in fact an emissary. Someone sent down from one of the other gods to help he and his sister in his quest for greatness.

It was still young, yes, but it would grow and would come to learn of its duty. A thoughtful sound like a purr rumbled in his throat as he mused these new thoughts. The young one's voice spoke in his ears again, just as he made the connection. "Yessss... A soul. A spirit. An emissary sent down from the heavens for my use." He purred from between his fangs. "A messenger for the use of the God of Stars... yessss..." All of a sudden he didn't mind the thing being on his back. "What is thine name, messenger?"

The civet made a weird huffing noise. Instead of being properly amazed at the phenomena before him, this canoid was asking more questions! "Don't know." It sighed in what was perhaps its first original sentence. It had just concluded it was something called a soul, and now it was being asked what it called itself. What more could be done to enlighten this poor giant beast beneath the spirit?
