It's not bad living here. It really isn't. I promise. I love plants. - Rift (Original) - Jul 19 2018

It was a lovely day in Eridanus. The plants had never looked better. No trace of plague remained in the forest. The black disgusting goop had been wiped clean and completely destroyed. The lights were shining bright and warm, almost as if the cave wasn't a cave at all. One could almost see the blue sky, if they even knew what a blue sky was.

Rift's front lawn was as beautiful as ever, lush and full of flowers and beautiful plants, well tended and cared for as if they were the cougar's very children. In a way, they were. He had raised them from seedlings, never using his magic in their process. It had paid off - they were healthier and more beautiful then if he had simply grew them immediately.

But the cat was nowhere to be seen. He was not checking his garden for any crushed stems or dying leaves. He wasn't watering them or lounging on a branch above. He wasn't prowling through the forest, healing and cleansing and watching for dangers. He wasn't doing anything he would normally do - he was lying silently under his tree.

His tail thumped occasionally against the ground, that and his twitching ear the only sign of his agitation. It had been growing for so long, festering like a disease he couldn't cure. Sebastian wasn't here - probably off in another cave doing who-knew-what. He remembered their confrontation and shuddered. He had promised to try and be more understanding and had given him his blessing to wander the caves. But the longer his absences went on, the less and less Rift liked this agreement. He wanted him here with him so that the days weren't as lonely. He wanted his brother all to himself.

Perhaps he was being selfish. But he had helped raise Sebastian from a cub! He had been there at his hatch! They had lived together their entire lives! Why did that all have to change? Why did Sebastian leave for Rift didn't? They had both sworn themselves to the protection of the forest and nature, but the black cat wasn't pulling his weight.

His tail thumped again.

Rift let out a long sigh, but didn't move from his place. His patrols and gardening had lost its charm. He did it so much, all day every day, that his lift just seemed to drag. There was nobody else, not since Pride and Amras. He had been alone.

He shifted and moved his head so that he was more comfortable, but his skin was itching to do something. But what was there to do that he hadn't done already? The thought that he should leave Eridanus and travel elsewhere popped into his mind for an instant before he immediately shoved it away. No, this was his home. He wasn't leaving. This was where he belonged.

RE: It's not bad living here. It really isn't. I promise. I love plants. - Flit - Jul 19 2018

On terms of body, Flit was fully grown, although he didn't know it by now. The last thing he knew, he'd eaten until he felt fit to burst, and fallen into a fitful rest. The next thing Flit knew, he was re-emerging from a magenta prison for the second time, dragging along behind him what felt like a wet blanket. But looking back, this prison was different. Flit felt dazed; almost hungover. When he looked back his cradle was soft, quite unlike the first time, which had been composed of hard stone. This one sunk in on itself with the texture of a tiny leaf. His previously blurry vision had cleared, and Flit found small pink paws drawn to something waving in front of his vision. Something feathery and soft, and when he touched them, they examined his paws in turn. Flit felt both contacts and knew that the feathery things were his.

Flit edged on, little paws barely disturbing the soft moss beneath him. He was still damp, his wings still rumpled, but no longer dragging behind him. The orb upon his tail was noticeably easier to bear. The fluttermouse felt an urge greater than the one to clean himself, involving climbing the nearest thing he could find. He knew it would be safer than on the ground, where curious ants were already starting to scent their curiosity. Flit climbed the stem of a nearby plant, feathery feelers waving, sending ripples of texture and scent through his body. Little pink paws clung easily to the surface, pulling him ever higher. The orb upon his tail only slightly weighed him down.

Clinging to a cross-section in the stem a few feet above the ground, the insect was oblivious to all as he settled into a groggy, almost comatose state, even with eyes wide open. He wrapped his tail around the plant, securing himself in place. Although what he was waiting for, he didn't know; nor was he aware that there was someone nearby, or that the luscious grove in which he'd found himself belonged to someone else.

RE: It's not bad living here. It really isn't. I promise. I love plants. - Rift (Original) - Jul 19 2018

After a little while longer, Rift could no longer stand sitting in his home. He had to at least get up and stretch his legs. Perhaps tend to his garden. The thought that, at one point, would have brought him joy only brought him a sense of boredom. His tail thumped one more time before he raised his head and struggled to his paws.

He instinctively turned back to groom his pelt but stopped himself just in time, blinking at all the things that were growing on him now. While he definitely loved the look of all the plants growing across his skin, the way he washed now was not exactly his favorite. He much preferred using his tongue to wading through cold pools to properly wash himself.

With a frustrated grunt, he rose to his paws and padded wearily out of his den. He brushed through his garden, letting the smells of the forest flow into his nostrils. He had been in this forest for nearly five cycles now and it was so familiar that the sense of wonder he once felt was now replaced by the lull of everyday life. As he padded on, he brushed right past the flower that the fluttermouse was perched on, not even noticing that the little creature was something more then a large moth. As he passed, his tail swung and bumped against the stalk, sending the flower waving gently as he headed towards his pond for a quick wash.

Flit was totally still, clinging harmlessly to the stalk, and had he not been disturbed, it's unknown how log he would have remained there in the same position, allowing his wings to slowly dry. However, the fluttermouse was dragged roughly back to his senses as the plant first swayed softly, before it violently bounced, swinging the little mouse roughly as he barely had time to adjust his grip.

He didn't know how long he'd been clinging there, but surely it wasn't long enough! his wings couldn't be dry! To fall would mean they might get crushed or worse! The creatures of this cave were so much bigger than he, and clumsier! no-one could ever help him if-

He let out a sharp squeal that would be barely audible to all but the sharpest ears and kept on clinging for a precious moment. Then, with the weight on his tail dragging him down, he had no choice but to let go.

He hung in the air for a moment of pure fear, wings splayed- and he didn't hit the ground. The next thing the insect knew was that he was airborne- fluttering and flitting about unsteadily, with his wings dry enough to keep the weight. Instinct alone seemed to have caught him, and he soared up, able to look down at the flower garden with an expression of wonder, before finally dropping down and alighting on the nearest flower he could see- which just so happened to be growing on a big, and well-camouflaged cat.

But Flit was too shocked to pay him any heed, his little heart thudding at the speed of light, trembling slightly with exhilaration.

He could fly; and finally his name made sense.

Rift was so intent on the dread of splashing into a cold pond that he almost didn't notice the tiny squeal that rose up from the flower. Almost. It just so happened to be one of those days that he had removed the leaves from around his ears and all the sounds of the forest were flowing into his head. Of course, by this time, he had become completely numb to it, his sharpened sense of hearing so normal to him that the background noises were a dull murmur. The tiny noise only passed through this barrier because it was a sound that he had never heard before.

At first, he didn't really register that he had heard anything at all. But then his good ear twitched as he realized something different had occurred and he turned his head back to look for what had made the squeak. And his eyes widened as they stopped on the tiny mouse perched on a flower on his back. For a moment, he simply looked at it, trying to comprehend what he was seeing. Was it a mouse or a moth? Or maybe both? Had he accidently licked one of the mushrooms growing on his fur? Had it caused him to hallucinate? No, he was feeling fine. This must be real.

Then again, he had seen stranger things. A gigantic snake, a triple bird turning into one, and all the strange things that happened in Polaris. In terms of weirdness in comparison to the caves, this strange little creature was barely uncommon.

His neck starting to hurt, he laid himself carefully on the ground and curled his body towards him so he could look back easier. He wondered if there was a chance that the little moth-mouse could speak so he quietly whispered, "Hello?"

RE: It's not bad living here. It really isn't. I promise. I love plants. - Flit - Jul 25 2018

Flit was drawn out of his thoughts as he felt his perch move beneath him, and froze. He looked up, hesitantly, and realized with a jolt where he was perched. The little one opened his mouth for a moment, whiskers freezing, fur along his spine rising, but he suddenly found himself completely frozen, gaze fixed on the giant head looking right at him.

Flit looked down- and now he could see the greenish fur beneath the flowers and plants around him, barely visible.

The little one wobbled, drawn roughly back to his senses as the large creature lay down. Was he going to roll? But then a booming voice reached him, bringing a momentary relief. "H-hello! I'm s-sorry, I didn't realize these flowers belonged to anyone!" he flustered, suddenly recovering from his momentary fear-paralysis. The little mouse spread his wings around him and prepared to fly. He leaped into the air, wings carrying him higher in a series of erratic beats. He fluttered high above the big cat, before descending and latching onto a nearby tree trunk. The little one turned to look back at the cat, only a little bit fearfully. Most of the big creatures he'd met so far had been nice to him; why should this one be any different? Still, it was better to play it safe and not offend anyone.

RE: It's not bad living here. It really isn't. I promise. I love plants. - Rift (Original) - Jul 28 2018

Even though Rift had spoken to it, he was still a little surprised that it had spoken back. He had never met a Greater Gembound that was so small and so odd looking. He watched with wonder as it opened its tiny wings and fluttered off of his back and onto a nearby tree. Slowly, so as not to spook the little creature, he rose to his paws and padded over, sitting down calmly in front of it, ear perked with interest.

For a moment, he forgot to answer the apology, instead wrapped up in the joy and relief of finding something new and absolutely not dangerous in his forest. He leaned forward carefully, whiskers twitching as he looked at the little thing. So wrapped up in his interest that he realized it was probably freaked out by him, being so much bigger and all. He leaned away, giving it space again.

"S-sorry," he whispered, "I've just never seen anything like you before!" He suddenly remembered what they had said earlier and his eyes widened. "Oh, and it's fine, the flowers belong to the earth, not me. I simply tend to them." For a second, a flash of pride ran through his pelt at the thought that someone thought that these were his plants. He had taken very good care of them, after all, and he seemed enough of a protector to have his own plants, apparently.

RE: It's not bad living here. It really isn't. I promise. I love plants. - Flit - Jul 30 2018

Flit's rounded ears twitched, and he turned his head slightly to watch the big cat moving over to him. He froze for a moment, whiskers twitching, but forced himself to relax. His heart was hammering-even though he knew it was irrational. There was something about large gembounds that made him falter sometimes, no matter how kind they always turned out to be. The fluttermouse felt a little bad about that.

Once he was close, though, the big cat spoke- his voice wonderfully soft against the little mouse's sensitive ears. "Oh, hey! Farrah said that too! H-have you... ever seen a mouse before? Felina said I looked like a mouse." As the cat responded to his worries concerning the flowers, the little one sighed with momentary relief. "Oh, that's good to know!" He looked around for a few moments longer before a flutter of his wings once again carried him aloft. This time, he perched on a nearby leaf and settled back on his hind paws so that he could properly look at the cat, pink feelers waving at the air, drawing in the floral scent of the cat's garden and the scent of his fur. Magenta wings folded together, hiding most of his body from view once again.

RE: It's not bad living here. It really isn't. I promise. I love plants. - Rift (Original) - Jul 30 2018

Rift's whiskers twitched. He didn't know this "Farrah" and wondered if there was someone running around his forest that he didn't know about. But from how the little moth-thing was talking, they didn't sound like so much of an enemy. Felina, he'd met, but she was okay. When they mentioned mouse, Rift suddenly realized that they did, in fact, look very much like a mouse, just very much the wrong color.

He nodded. "Oh yes," he whispered, without thinking, "I used to hunt mice." He suddenly widened his eyes as he realized exactly what he had just said, chastising himself for being so careless. "W-well, that was a long time ago. I switched to plants and fruits and now I'm on an all-sunlight diet." His tail flicked and brushed against his green fur. "That's why I'm all green now."

He watched as the little creature rose into the air and settled on a leaf just in front of him. He stared at the tiny feelers with interest, noting that he had never seen a mouse with little antenna like that. Nor one so yellow. Nor one with wings. Definitely not a mouse. "So, uh, what are you?" The question was a little blunt and he decided in a flash to back it up with a gentler question. "Do you have a name?"

RE: It's not bad living here. It really isn't. I promise. I love plants. - Flit - Aug 02 2018

Flit opened his mouth, showing for an instant a streak of his white lower teeth. His twitching whiskers stiffened, feelers froze, and there was a short but stunned silence. The yellowish fur of his mane fluffed out for a second, but Flit shook his head and resumed motion a moment later, trying to brush it off. He... might not be a mouse anyway! Right? And Rift quickly dismissed the thought, allowing the little one a small shudder of relief, even if he couldn't help staying a little wary- even if the feeling came with a sliver of guilt. "Oh! Right! that's why I didn't see you. I thought you were moss!"

Flit found his gaze drawn to the plants and flowers clinging to the feline form- haphazardly, it seemed, but with an unmistakeable elegance. Flit found his curiosity growing; he'd never really considered the use of plants for anything outside of foodstuffs, and, well... truth be told, leaves didn't look very appetising anymore. although he remembered them being delicious, something in his belly told him that they wouldn't be quite so scrumptious now. But for another reason entirely, Flit felt an urge in his heart to leave the trees behind and look for a meadow, a wonderful haven with long grasses and trailing leaves. This jungle was nice, it was true, but the fluttermouse found that the leaves and tight spaces no longer felt so welcoming. He wondered briefly why, but then remembered the wings at his back.

"What am I? Uh, I..." the little creature spent a moment considering, seeming surprised by the question. But then he glanced back towards his wings once again, magenta appendages folded against his back, and a word came to his lips almost unbidden. "I'm a Fluttermouse, I think. Yes... that sounds right!" The little thing felt like jumping for pride and joy, little feelers waving frantically. Unless there were others like him who used a different name for their kind, Flit thought that it was perfect. "And my name is Flit!"
