RE: [Quest] The Training Dungeon - Ancient Ruins - Yew - Jul 21 2025

Yew is able to stay out of the way this time, but she might not be so successful in the future. Yew watches as the tongue comes out flailing - that looks painful. She does her best to avoid that and think of a plan. The tentacles are still attached - if she was able to get rid of one... Would it fall?

RE: [Quest] The Training Dungeon - Ancient Ruins - Callista - Jul 23 2025

I used to think that the day would never come
I'd see the light in the shade of the morning sun

She only took a moment to be freaked out from the "being eaten by a living wooden chest" experience before Callista's brain caught up with her again and she scrambled away as best she can, fur puffed up where it wasn't damp from saliva.

She turned herself over once she was a distance away, breathing heavily, and reached for something on the ground that she could use to attack one more time before it was over. Damn chest. Her paw grabbed on a piece of rock, maybe a random stone or a fallen piece of the ceiling, who cares. A quick stash of magic in her muscle and she lobbed the rock at the chest, a burst of energy sending it hurtling faster then a kit like her could possibly throw it. She didn't care where it hit, as long as it hit.

That my life would depend on the evening moon
That the night would never comе

RE: [Quest] The Training Dungeon - Ancient Ruins - Menkheperre - Jul 27 2025

So many went for the mimic's tentacles and squealing hinges, for the tongue and whip. They're effective to varying degrees, and Menkheperre can't discount that, but—

Tired, exasperated and overwhelmed as he is, the Valkhound can't afford another minute of this chaos— (and that's ironic, given the nature of his stone—) before he starts to get his hands good and properly dirty. Sure, this might've been over sooner had he started to put all his natural weaponry to use like the squat, striped animal being tongued over yonder, but—

But—

But—

Oh, goodness. He can't think straight. Certainly not enough to make a precise, well-measured strike at the mimic with magic.

But, he tries it anyway, and is duly punished for his frantic effort by an equally as frantic tongue-strike, drawing a hiss out from his throat and a vengeful swat of the claws (which misses, too) as another bruise joins the many on his body.

RE: [Quest] The Training Dungeon - Ancient Ruins - Audland - Jul 28 2025

Boy howdy, there was a lot going on. Not that Audland could see any of it. In the chaos of being gobbled up (well, as much as anything could gobble Audland up), Auddie failed to realize who exactly he was next to until it was too late. Just when he thought salvation had come upon him—as a kind, yet small hand reached out to grab his own—somebody familiar used their phony, STUPID, USELESS—

As Menkheperre accomplishes his VILE (frankly hilarious) trick, he will hear a primal guttural scream from within the belly (maw) of the beast, carrying words so snarled and twisted by rage that they sounded nearly unrecognizable as language. "AAAWHH, YOU—SON OF A—GARBLIN' GARB-DARNEN VARMINT, YOU—!!!! GRAAAAAAH!!!!!"

Audland will remember this.

And while all his blubber and fluff gets balled up and constricted with painful discomfort in the slobbery, disgusting mouth of this thing, some idiot has the bright idea to claw into him on their selfish little way out. He responds to Callista's apologies with a very sarcastic, road rage-esque, "AW, YEAH, NO, NO, O' COURSE—!!!" He's practically howling through teeth gritted tight into an ugly sardonic smile, all while thrashing as violently as he can. He doesn't accomplish much.

In his helpless, agonizing fury, Audland's temper all but consumes him. The box gets looser as more and more Gembound put their efforts into tearing it apart, and by the time Audland reaches his maximum pressure point, he's already been practically thrown up out of the box. But none of this matters to Audland anymore. His paws are balled up into tight fists, his long nails surely cutting into some of his skin, pressing tight enough to create the slightest trickle of blood.

Chaos responds to his call half heartedly, sending bone-cold flame to the open wounds, causing little pieces of living fire to drip down to the floor riding on the black ichor that leaves his hands. As the fire steadily grows up his arms, Audland directs his first wrath toward the box.

@Callista @Menkheperre (baby raging at you) @Angel (sort of. to Witness)

RE: [Quest] The Training Dungeon - Ancient Ruins - Thalia - Aug 02 2025

Thalia went whipping by, albeit to her in slow motion. She was clinging to the mimic, and struggling to fight it--by thwapping it repeatedly with her enchanted flute.

Thwap. THWAP. Thwap-thwap-thwap.

Predictably this did absolutely nothing. She looked very determined, maybe even courageous, but was just background silliness against the foreground actual combat and heroics taking place around her.

At least she could make a song about it later.

RE: [Quest] The Training Dungeon - Ancient Ruins - Game Master Dark - Aug 02 2025

It took a few moments more for the Mimic to die. Violent moments, moments where it thrashed and whipped a violent weapon of a tongue about and flopped on its last leg--er, tentacles. It was side-slammed by a dog. A latch went pop! and sprung, never to close again, as a strange bipedal... cat? thing? attacked it. (It had no idea what Angel was, or what any of them were, aside from having reassigned them from 'food' to 'OH NO' mentally.) Hoof-kicks, someone--swallowing??? its tongue? (WHY?), a tentacle being shorn off by painful pecks of a beak, the bounce of a rock, the flicker of cursed flame scorching it--it build up, overwhelmed, leaving the chest first trembling and then collapsing.

When it died, it did so spectacularly. Or very anti-climactically, depending on how you viewed it: the wood bowed and suddenly collapsed, the 'planks' that made up its body spilling outward as all the gems, coins, and treasure that had been swallowed up as lures suddenly came unbound. The remaining tentacles, mimic's blood--the tongue in Eleven's throat (seriously, why?!)-... It all went limp and silent. A little bit of black, cold fire coursed across the 'wood' and then went dim.

And it was time for them to claim the treasure, then--what they'd searched for before, now readily available for the taking.

When they were finished, a doorway awaited. Beyond, a tunnel: one that merged with three others, all four dungeon wings recombining into a single exit, a half-collapsed (but still traversible) open passageway that wound, quite far, back up to Lacerta's surface. The top was safe, overgrown but miraculously free of predators, and in fact not too far from the staging ground where they'd started.

They would be free to go, with the experience, minor injuries, emotional trauma regarding treasure and mimic tongues, and loot that they'd acquired--and a story to tell, if they chose to share it.

Surely Bartholomew Bear would wish to know of their survival.

Zephiran would find seventeen Coins along with a shield. This shield was intended for humanoids, but could perhaps be refitted as armor, or traded for something more suitable for his form. It was unenchanted, but beautifully wrought: a silvery-white metal of some kind, exceedingly hard yet quite lightweight, uniform in its very pale coloring and surprisingly untarnished by time.

Spark, in addition to the single coin they had claimed, now located a beautiful silver chain intended as a necklace or collar. It was somewhere between the thick links of a utility chain and the delicate metal of jewelry, and enchanted with Mist Cover, so that it gave off a constant (if small) cloud of mist in the area around it. It, too, was of beautiful make: shining but simple, if elegantly crafted.

V-Chaos-Eleven would find two coins and a pewter bracer. It looked plain, at first, and very tarnished--almost black--with little spikes of gemstone (red coral and violet amethyst) sticking up around it. It was enchanted, however, with Cool Down: an area a couple feet around it was kept perpetually a few degrees cooler than the ambient air. Useful, in certain circumstances.

Genghis found three coins, along with a strange, ceremonial dagger. The dagger was steel core, but plated in the gold-silver alloy electrum, with a black Jet gemstone set in the hilt. It was enchanted with Decay: wounds inflicted by it might become infected with a painful necrotic fungus that would prevent healing. As a result, the otherwise beautiful plating was strangely gray and mottled, in places, with raised bumps as though an organic fungus had somehow twisted it.

Fleas procured twelve coins, along with a strange and beautiful, exotic statuette made of glossy black gemstone, inlaid with flowing silver detailing. It featured what looked like an aquatic creature crossed with a canine: not unlike Fleas in its upper body, with an almost smiling canine face, but with webbed paws and a mermaid-like lower body with scales and fins. The idol was enchanted with Purify, and so could be used to purify water sources up to the size of a small pond, though more polluted sources would require longer contact with the item; at worst, it might require several hours.

Angel found twelve more coins to eat along with an interesting weapon until now likely never seen by Gembounds in this cave: a nunchaku-type martial arts weapon. It was unenchanted but well-made, formed of two lengths of pale ash wood that had petrified into almost stone over time, connected by a short silver chain.

Halcyon would find twelve coins, as well--seemingly a theme now--along with a beautiful piece of Aventurine. It was partially rough and porous, like soft green soap in appearance, but with a polished, angled tip in crystalline shape. It had once belonged to a beast in golden fur and feathers, striped in thin markings of magenta fading into purple. In appearance it was best described as a wyrm: long and sinuous, with two powerful, taloned legs (with retractable claws, strangely enough) and a face that, despite being reptilian, had a hard black keratin shell on the muzzle not unlike a bird's beak. Sharp yellow-gold eyes with feline slits and tiger-like ears and whiskers finished the strange appearance. This creature was approximately 17 feet long from snout to tail-tip.

Callista would find a strange gauntlet: a glove, but only one, glittering with encrusted amethyst and topaz gemstones. It was silver, beautifully crafted, etched and engraved with numerous little scenes: a fruit tree, a fish, a cat-like gembound with wings. But more importantly it was enchanted, with Transfer; moving and pushing heavy items using this glove would be much easier.

Audland would find a gleaming silver longsword (well, steel, but it LOOKED silvery) of wonderful make and balance. While technically enchanted, the enchantment was simply Glow, leaving it essentially baubled; it looked like the weapon of some holy paladin. Alongside this lay eight ancient coins.

Menkheperre would find nothing cloth or leather had survived for so long. However, there were literal treasure chests lying about. One--made of dark wood set with golden latches and bindings--was small enough to take, and sturdy enough to last, along with being compact. Within were only two coins, but the chest was notable in that it was enchanted: a Levitate enchantment meant that when it was empty, the chest happily floated a couple inches off the ground, and was otherwise a little lighter-weight than usual.

Thalia would find a pair of silvery bracers, engraved with flowing yet jagged designs. They would click together with a simple hinge and latch for each arm, and were enchanted with Call Current, providing a short and nasty shock to attackers. She would find four coins scattered nearby.

Mai would find five coins, along with a strange little gold-and-oak box. The box was a case, not a treasure chest in and of itself; within were a number of fine glass bottles, capped with a glass 'cork.' Each bore a different motif and decoration: one had silver wire with green metal leaves twined around it, another golden metal 'stars' sparkling all over, another was painted a deep flowing blue like water, and so forth. It wasn't clear what they were for; maybe they could now be used for dye or alchemical concoctions, or simply decoration.

Yew would find two coins, along with a golden metal mask that would fit her face, extending slightly over her beak. The throat latch was a metal band, and had so survived the test of time. While ornate and almost ominous, in an intimidatingly beautiful way, the mask was as-yet unenchanted.

Characters may exit at will. After posting their exit, they may a) post in Magicka Market for the thread claim, b) add their loot to their inventory, and c) post in Update Me for a soon-to-be-released achievement!

Those who did not post this round must make up for any missed rounds before their loot search/exit/claim. This should be GM-tagged for, as this thread will no longer be checked otherwise! Other wings of the dungeon will be completed in the coming days!

RE: [Quest] The Training Dungeon - Ancient Ruins - Audland - Aug 03 2025

Watching the evil awful horrible no-good chest fall beaten, battered, and cold-burnt to a crisp made Audland heave a heavy sigh... of victory. No task in all his days (of which there had only been maybe 60) had ever been that hard. Thing was a fighter. But he—well, they were stronger fighters still.

Some. Some of them.

Before Audland could even think to stick around for the time-honored purposes of taunting, jeering, and bullying, his eyes locked on first to the spillage of not blood, buttreasure. He was too tired to attempt another dive. Something of his brawn and mass of fur was not built to sustain the build up of heat induced by long bouts of exercise in less-than-freezing climates. So all he did was plunge a hand into the heap to pull out the shiniest object he could see. Which happened to be... a longer blade? Longer than any of his claws were. It shone, it glimmered, but it wasn't really his style. The design on it was far too... what was the word? Certainly not ostentatious. Preachy?

A creature of such avarice such as Audland would normally not consider such a thing as trading, and even less so gifting, but every Pokemon card collector has their favorites... and their fodder. He sought the little cat guy. Haughty as it had been before, the creature had pulled him out of that Betrayer's mouth. Before someone had gone and ruined it. Audland had a lot of revenge to enact, but first he ought to consider further arming a literal baby. Not that he knew the difference.

If the little armored shmunk hadn't scuttled away yet, Audland would aim to take him by surprise. Though it was unclear how surprising an 8 foot tall blue meatball could be, especially when said meatball was still smoking from the remnants of black flame dancing at the ends of his fur. As we will later see, Audland can be pretty deft when he tries.

Granted he can get close enough to Angel, Audland will attempt to come up behind them and make (of course) the most immediately offensive entrance by plucking Angel's goodie bag from wherever on their person they had decided to store it. Raising it high into the air with one hand to "study it up close", Audland would press his other palm to the little cat's face in the hopes of gently deterring any increasingly drastic protests. "Ap-ba-ba-ba-bah, hold on now," he would warn the likely struggling-to-climb(-or-kill)-him Angel as he settled Angel's pouch somewhere among his brambleous antlers. With his now-free hand, Audland would draw the silvery steel longsword from somewhere on his body that he had stashed it to keep it out of sight.

"If your language comprehendin' abilities have not entirely failed you—I'd like to offer a trade." The sword would be postured above Angel's head with the edge of the blade almost threatening (somewhat intentionally) to cut Angel's eyes. "Trade, little thing. You understand me? Trade." If Angel looked any more compliant, or at least a little less insane, Audland would flip the sword around and offer the hilt. "One of your shinies for this. An' I suggest you take up the offer, even if the blade don't suitcher grip as it is. The sheen of it reminds me of your... hey, is that attached to your skin?" Audland's gaze and the surrounding visual context would likely thoroughly denote that 'that' likely refers to the metal armor adorning certain parts of Angel's frame. Audland hadn’t had enough of a look at it to notice before…

@Angel (interaction; powerplayed some things based on a previous DM but if you would like me to undo it pleas let me know! i just wanted to get the post squared away first, but there is a way to rewrite this interaction to be less invasive so fear not.)

RE: [Quest] The Training Dungeon - Ancient Ruins - Menkheperre - Aug 03 2025

Cause-effect goes into play with the bullying brute, but Menkheperre cannot muster more than a twisted feeling of satisfaction with a vengeance completed; and that feeble little mustering is enough to spark up a new, mile-wide streak of guilt. There's little time to acknowledge it amidst his rising sense of overwhelmed over-stimulation, of course, but he'll certainly be digesting it later in his journals—

Oh, but the chest finally heaves its last, crumpling into a pile of wood— (flesh, maybe— he'd be curious if he were not so upset for the moment—) and borrowed treasures that can pose no further threat. The thing hardly performs a final death throe before collapsing, and that leaves him particularly... narratively dissatisfied with the ending of these proceedings.

All the tropes and traps, and that's it.. ? No true big bad appearing at the end of the fight, come to steal a prize from beneath the heroes' noses? No gloating reprise? A second half fighting the mimic would have been a final nail in his restraints, but—

Menkheperre shakes his head, sucking in a breath of air that he didn't realize that he'd been starving himself of. His dissociated gaze turns sidelong, angling first for Audland without an actual intention in mind, before swaying toward the discarded loot. He'd later find himself frowning at his choice of loot, but for the moment: He just needs to find someplace quiet and spend some time with the coloring books that he has left.

exit menkhe, unless interrupted.

RE: [Quest] The Training Dungeon - Ancient Ruins - Spark - Aug 05 2025

Spark had danced around the room, now nursing two injuries as they struggled to avoid gaining a third. Thankfully, the mimic succumbed under the onslaught of Gembound, collapsing into all manner of valuables. Something flashed as it snaked through the air, catching their attention as it fell only a few feet away.

A chain. An oddly wet chain. Then Spark noted the vapor the cool metal seemed to emit, and they stopped themselves from throwing the necklace away in digust. They'd already picked it up.

They took a moment to admire the craftsmanship, then to wear it, and then to admire themselves too - before remembering where they were, and what had just occurred. Spark shook themselves before heading towards Genghis.

"Hey. Thank you, for what you did. It was... Brave. And nice of you."

@Genghis

RE: [Quest] The Training Dungeon - Ancient Ruins - V-Chaos-Eleven - Aug 05 2025

Meanwhile.

There were no thoughts in her head. V-Chaos-Eleven's emotional experience of these moments could not be described in words. All the worst feelings in a few seconds. We'll call it overwhelming.

Thank Rrevalk, the Masters, whoever, that the mimic died then and not seconds later, that it hadn't freed its tongue in its final moments and taken Eleven's teeth with it. Unfortunately, with the limb going completely limp, it started to worm its way FURTHER down-

Cue the most grotesque wretching you've ever heard as she attempted to eject the large, slimy foreign body from her respiratory system as soon as possible.

The tongue slapped to the floor. Eleven stared at it blankly for what felt like an hour.

Ok. Enchanted bracer. Whatever. We're getting the fuck out of here.
