RE: SUPERNOVA - Verdant - Dec 01 2021

VERDANT

and then the universe screamed

The whispers were getting stronger. They could "hear" them, in their own special way, by tapping into the neurons around them as they whirled in response to the sounds.

"Hell0? Are [unheard] in h...re? W-wh-wh d|d ... o?"

D...N'T L3AVe [redacted] AL--E...

Thrill coursed through Verdant's form. While the cat may have been scared-- horrified, even-- the parasite was feeling the call of adventure. They wanted to know. They NEEDED to know. Oh, they spent SO LONG trapped in their body, and now they had something calling after them, something! Wasn't that so exciting?

They were completely unaware of the incoming rats.

Verdant tried to move their host, tried to do something, something-- but their magic fizzled out before they could. "No..." frustration, anger helplessness... "NO! I have to-- I have to move! LET ME MOVE!"

"DON'T LEAVE ME ALONE!"

No one can hear their screams.

RE: SUPERNOVA - Catalpa - Dec 01 2021

Louder, now. The whispers, more insistent. Rising—and the rats, too, with them.

Catalpa stares. That's all she can do, even as an instinctive, scared little part of her screams for her to run, run, get out get away (and save the poor little snake on her paw, which seems to have gone motionless with panic)—she stands there in the face of the rising hoard and watches them approach.

A part of her, filled with morbid curiosity, doesn't want to run at all.

"Are—are you—" Still so full of questions, even in the face of potential danger. "—are you the rats?"

All of them? All of them at once? Can a creature be one thing, many bodies? The thought feels impossible but the proof is right in front of her, crawling closer with the heralding stench of decay.

"I—I won't—" Her voice, faltering, frightful; even though she can stand the horrible sight of so many rats dead seeing them moving is yet another thing. Even if she's used to dead prey, she's still just a kit. "I won't l-l-leave if you don—don't—if you don't hurt me!"

Still, as the rats draw closer, she can't help but take a frightened step backwards, trembling.

RE: SUPERNOVA - Game Master Dark - Dec 01 2021

The rats did not react. Not to the movements of the Gembound--not to their sounds. Not to anything. Instead they continued their lurching, empty-eyed shuffle. The black stone shone from their hides, their bones, in ragged clusters. And all the while, the chant repeated, swelling louder and louder:

"DØNᛌT LEA᳒VE ME ALØNE..."

If the Gembounds chose to stay, they would soon be within the press of ragged, starving gray bodies.

This seemed unwise.

RE: SUPERNOVA - Verdant - Dec 02 2021

VERDANT

and then the universe screamed

Okay, calm down. They had to CALM DOWN. Screaming into the void will not help their situation. They had to hold onto that feeling of adventure and calmly access what was going on.

Okay. Deep metaphorical breaths. There was-- sound, loud sound, the same chant over and over. There was-- movement, the fleasnake host having been spooked so much by the commotion that it slithered around wildly and blindly. There was fear, not from them, but coursing through the neurons around them. All the things they could sense. Not the rapidly approaching rats, nor the terror in Catalpa's eyes. Just those three things.

The fleasnake, in it's blind fear, slipped between the cracks of Catalpa's paw and thumped to the floor. The impact ricocheted through Verdant's form, disrupting their train of thought. It took several seconds for the throbbing to cease. Where were we? Oh, right, what to do next.

They looked over their entire spell library.

They could use the Red Sense again-- but what would that prove? That the sound surrounding them had bodies? A poor use of time.

Try to control the body again? No, that never worked.

Perhaps they could... ah, that's it.

They reached out with the speaking-spell like a tendril pushing through a curtain of mist. Being without sight it was incredibly hard to "navigate" it towards the intended subject, but they mentally followed the sound of chanting and went from there. At last-- a connection. A weak one, but one nonetheless.

"Connection. Hello, One Who Speaks." Calm, happy, alien voice, ignoring both the rampant danger and their own anxiety. So much smoother and comprehensible than their previous whispers.

"I am the [gibberish] Verdant, one with the Calamity. It is great. Great to connect with you. Who are you?"

They thought about the chants, the words they could only half-recognized. Now that they were speaking, it felt so much easier to understand.

"I won't leave you alone."

RE: SUPERNOVA - Catalpa - Jan 12 2022

No response. No reply. Just the incessant, repeating whisper; over and over again, the call—don'tleavemealonedon'tleavemealonedon'tleavemealone—the chant which swells, repeating, over and over and over again, the rats coming closer, closer—

And… Catalpa can't. She can't stay. She doesn't… she doesn't want to leave them behind, a part of her doesn't want to leave the things behind that are so obviously in pain (and the snake, the snake! the poor thing that she dropped oh caves), but another part of her doesn't have the courage to stand there as the grey tide drags itself closer and closer.

She whimpers. Her voice, quiet.

"I'm sorry."

And she turns and runs.

RE: SUPERNOVA - Game Master Dark - Feb 05 2022

A sensationwashed through the room. Was that... desperation? Relief? Behind it came a wave of strange whispers, emanating from the shining black rock twisted through the little space.

There was nothing coherent in them, this time; but it was filled with reassurances, pleas, demands. The rats lurched toward Verdant's serpentine little host, and though they staggered, fanged jaws parted wide and gray fur ragged.

Whatever they were planning to do, it wouldn't end well for the snake--but for the parasite? Maybe this would be... an opportunity. A dangerous one--but a chance to learn something, nonetheless.

Deepest apologies that this is so late! I'll let you decide whether Host Snek™ is eaten or chooses to flee

VERDANT

and then the universe screamed

The worm did not flee.

It simply writhed around in the absence of its companion, blind and unable to escape the rapidly approaching danger.

Verdant found themself intently studying the soundwaves travelling through their host's damaged brain, analyzing any signs of the voice's continued activity. And oh, it was there. Countless overlapping pleas, all detected by the little snake as a mishmash of distorted sounds. It was enough for them to feel confident in their refusal to flee. They will not abandon this newfound mission they have discovered, this literal calling.

Calamity. The felt a twinge of... something, at the remembrance of their other half. What will the living planet think of them and their reckless trapezing into the unknown. Gently, they reach out a connection, thinking towards the direction of their partner: "Little planet. The Verdant is about to complete an activity. I will be back, I promise. There is something with me. I must attend to it."

And back to the present. It wanted to address the mysterious presence one last time, a reassurance that they are here and won't leave. This thing seemed desperate, and all they wanted to do was soothe.

A faint, garbled whisper, directed towards the unknown:

"Go ahead."

RE: SUPERNOVA - Game Master Dark - May 08 2022

Consumed.

There was no other word for it: the poor fleasnake was torn to violent pieces, ripped apart and swallowed down. And Verdant-... Verdant would find themselves in a new host.

However long it took them to establish that connection would teach them its own brief lesson: that the creature it was now going to be inhabiting was sick. The blood was thin, and weak. The heart pattered in fluttering desperation. There were not enough nutrients flowing through this body, not enough strength in the muscles.

It hadn't been eating, or drinking, or sleeping. Perhaps Verdant could direct it to do otherwise, by exerting enough control? But if not, they were in a doomed vessel. At the very least, they could learn something from observing its slow demise, were they detached enough, watchful enough.

For now, the rats returned, their prey devoured, into the dark. They slunk as one, crawling through the dark and narrow spaces, until they had come back to their home: a long, impossibly large, twisted length of the iridescent, dark stone. It did not feel like Corruption, if Verdant had ever tasted Corruption's magic: but it thrummed with power nonetheless. The rats clustered there, as if tending to it--and Verdant might notice then what it could not have seen before.

The rats held fragments of this stone within their bodies. Not just the clustered shards, but particles, flowing through their bloodstream, lodged in their muscles. They had been gnawing at it, consuming it, taking it into themselves.

And the vein--in the dark, the rats could see. It was so large, stretching toward Cetus like extending fingers, and it groaned, as if even now, it were growing.

How long had it been here-? Was it truly getting larger? What was it doing to these rats?

Was there any way for Verdant to find out more--and more importantly, could they do anything to stop it?

Oddly, the voice had fallen silent. Its connection to all of this was, for now, unclear.
