RE: test for respect - Scion - May 19 2022 Ruby-Beta returned its paw to the ground, but it noted in a moment that the stranger was still on edge, tense, and one wrong move would have it sprinting across Draco again. Alright, alright, that was okay. It could keep the act - no, push it farther.
In an incredibly cat-like movement, Ruby-Beta set its paws out in front of it and arched its back in a long, languid stretch, as if completely unconcerned with anything going on. At the question, they looked back and genuine confusion slipped into their voice. RE: test for respect - Game Master Dark - May 20 2022 The creature didn't visibly relax, at least. Ruby-Beta might infer a few different things from this: either it already hadn't considered them a threat and was simply very oriented on its own survival, or it held its emotions close to its chest, or it perceived another threat of some kind entirely.
Whatever the case, it gave a short, impatient huff through its nose. "You're soft," it observed, half-interrupting the tail end of Ruby-Beta's sentence. There was faint derision in it. Maybe the act had worked, after all; it certainly seemed to be underestimating the Ruby. "No, you shouldn't recognize me." It lifted one paw, licking it once, setting it back down. Smoke again flared around it. "If you did, I would be doing everything wrong. You're the first one to even see me in many cycles." The creature paused, staring intently at Ruby-Beta. The question about the rocks was, for now, left unaddressed. "I can teach you to move like I do. Totally unseen. Silent. For a price." Its beady black eyes narrowed. "You interested?" @Ruby-Beta RE: test for respect - Scion - May 20 2022 Okay, it was working. Good. The other was definitely thinking the ruby wasn't a threat. Underestimating it. Hopefully, it would find a way to turn that around on it. But the continuous tense stance, probably hard-wired into it at this point, especially in enemy territory, was kind of throwing a nail in its plan. It had intended on getting it to turn around and striking then, but it doubted it would get the chance.
It had to keep up the act, though, as it tried to formulate a plan. It tilted its head, as if curious. Eyes widened at the suggestion, both for its act and as itself. It seemed like its plan had a new direction, and it was going to get a new opportunity. Hopefully, if it didn't completely fall flat again. RE: test for respect - Game Master Dark - May 21 2022 'Aren't you just another gembound?'
The creature scoffed, pushing upright, its tail swishing like an irritated cat's before stilling. "No," it answered bluntly, with that clear disdain again threading through its voice. "The price is, you call me and watch my back now and then with one of these chrysalises. They make a good meal," it said. One forelimb briefly lifted, wiggling the big, thick curved claws there. "Weak ones, of course. I wouldn't want to upset your master." There it was again--that light mockery--and the stranger's eyes narrowed. "In return, I'll teach you to move like I do. Completely hidden. I'll teach you to turn invisible." @Ruby-Beta RE: test for respect - Scion - May 21 2022 Eyes widened just a fraction. It had guessed already that this wasn't any normal creature - it wondered why it'd been created, and by who. It wasn't new, that was for sure. Perhaps ancient. Before the Great Awakening, back when the Trials were run often. Maybe even before?
It chose not to comment on this, however. It didn't seem to want to delve in farther. Perhaps, once it was killed or otherwise dispatched, it would ask Master Vargas about it. If he knew who this was. He probably did, Master Vargas seemed to know many of the ancient creatures that had awoken in the last few cycles. The offer was a bit of a shock to Beta, not quite expecting it to...freely offer its back to it. But perhaps its ploy had paid off. All it had to do was...watch its back. And the strike, then, would be easy. It would be too distracted to realize that its guardian had turned traitor until it was too late. Beta had to keep it up, then, until that time. It let itself look a little apprehensive. Even someone as dumb as it was trying to come across as would probably not be too happy about letting anyone commit murder. It shuffled its feet, tail flicking a bit. RE: test for respect - Game Master Dark - May 22 2022 For a long moment, the creature did not respond. It simply stared at Ruby-Beta, dark eyes half-narrowed in thought. It was considering Ruby-Beta's hesitated words, its bashful demeanor, the averted eyes, the uncertainty. This was nothing like the Chaos it had known, the savage Valkhounds it had successfully evaded throughout the height of the rebellion.
When at last it spoke, it was with that thread of derision again. "Is this an act-? I hope for your sake this is an act. The stammering? -Are you this weak?" There was disgust at this last, the beady eyes shooting up and down Ruby-Beta's form. If it wasn't an act, they really were desperate, these days. "Please tell me this is an act," it added, and now it sounded exasperated. @Ruby-Beta |
