RE: [Quest] The Training Dungeon - Volcanic Vents - Maw - Jun 07 2025

It truly did not seem like any of the people Maw had run into from her past were still roaming the caves now. She had yet to see even one familiar face, even with the numerous crowd-gathering events that seemed to be happening. Is that why she awoke? Just to participate by her lonesome?

It was almost a comfort and almost a curse. She had debated going out again without any sort of costume, but ultimately decided to bring her cowl, just in case. In just a few moments she would regret that choice.

She opted for the leftmost tunnel, mostly because her brain was not running at full speed and her feet seemed to be doing most of the thinking in its place. Upon entry, the first thing she had noticed was the heat and the glowing. The first thing some other part of her had noticed, however, was the amount of people she saw. Almost like she had forgotten, the wretched itch. Nearly getting her killed. She had slammed her jaws shut and reentered chrysalis.

But the Coil around her heart was ever tightening, ever binding. That word, that name whispered at the back of her head... Hum... She dared not think of it. It was only an itch. Only an inkling. She could resist that primal urge to scratch.

For now.

Back to the present—what were they doing here? Ah. A bridge, and not a sturdy one. While not an issue for Maw in particular, it was unclear how to get the others across. Then again, maybe they didn't need to just yet. Maybe she could get a look ahead, or if there was anyone small enough she might be able to... ah. No one much smaller than her. Could've figured.

Then—an idea! Given that she was presumably safe from a fall, perhaps she could check the bridge for others? Maybe she was too small to do much in the way of testing for some of the bigger Gembound. Either way, they needed to cross the bridge eventually.

Maw would attempt to cross the bridge the traditional way, knowing that if anything happened, her wings and magic would get her out of there quickly.

OOC: Maw is trying to cross the bridge like normal, assuming her Meteors Flight / Cloud Step combo can save her if necessary.

RE: [Quest] The Training Dungeon - Volcanic Vents - Tyrin - Jun 07 2025

Tyrín hates heights.

He didn’t know that until right now. Right now, standing on a bridge that doesn’t look or even feel safe.

Well.

Here he goes, crouching low to keep his balance and keep up with the group… May be a bad choice. But it’s his.

RE: [Quest] The Training Dungeon - Volcanic Vents - Wyrm - Jun 07 2025

Wyrm was far from home. Truth be told, she didn't really know what was happening; she'd been exploring, spotted Fahl and the rest was history.

Maybe he hadn't seen her, but she'd drawn up JUST in time to hear him, and-

"What's FUCKING mean?" she chirped, bounding up alongside him with bright eyes. "Uncle Fahl-? What's FUCKING mean?" She gazed up at him with innocence, and it wasn't clear if the twinkle in her gaze was humor, or just interest.

But truth be told, their concerns were more than bad words at the moment.

Wyrm turned her attention forward. The heat... she'd been glad Fahl had picked this route, because heat was comfortable for her. It reminded her of her own magic, a magic she tried to call on to better illuminate her own steps as she passed across the bridge. Not that the room was dark, exactly, but it wasn't super bright, and she knew her magic could help.

(@Fahl just for addressing/visibility!!)

RE: [Quest] The Training Dungeon - Volcanic Vents - Game Master Dark - Jun 07 2025

Some of them--like Fahl, Rajani, Hargrave and the like--would simply be aware of the instability underfoot just before It happened. Others had cast specific spells, and gleaned information accordingly: the strange shift in microbe growth in the bridge just beforehand, the screaming of all of Tourmaline's senses (the sound, the vibration, oh no-)... Others, with wind and light and simple caution, would be prepared instead of forewarned. But both were just as good.

The CRACK! came suddenly, with stones tumbling from overhead, smashing into the destabilizing bridge--which collapsed, tumbling into the lava below! ...No, thank the caves. On TOP of it. The bridge, shattering, simply splashed onto the lava's surface, creating islands the Gembounds would need to hop between. Nobody would die--nobody would be pitched into the boiling, liquid rock. But those who were too slow, or hadn't seen it coming: they might fall hard, or be singed or choke on unexpected smoke. But! They'd need to be FAST! Leaping, from stone to stone--or flying--to a stone ramp that led up and out, to a dark gap of a doorway up ahead.

And those few who had been extra cautious, or extra perceptive... would see the skeletons littering the islands below just before the crash. Would see something... glittering there. It would be outright easy for most to race across the sinking stones--and for the lucky few who'd been particularly aware, to grab something on the way.

But now... the way out, for most, was gone. The only way ahead was forward!

The bridge has collapsed. Characters should react, and then move on to the next room.

Characters who rolled successfully (barely+) last round may avoid any danger, and choose to help one other character of their choosing. (Fahl, Thalassa, Rajani, Tourmaline, September, Surgis, V-Agate-One, Wyrm)

Those who critically failed cannot be aided by others, and were knocked down by falling stone before anyone could react! (Their injuries are still minor.) (Maw)

Those who critically succeeded may also roll to pick a piece of treasure from the skeletons littering the stone islands in the lava: they may look for coins, armor, a weapon, etc. in general terms. The item will be rolled for, detailed and described by GMs in the next post. (Bauxite-T-One, Hargrave)

This quest is now closed to new entrants. The next post will take place in four days, on June 11th, afternoon/evening GMT.

RE: [Quest] The Training Dungeon - Volcanic Vents - Bauxite-T-One - Jun 07 2025

The crowd grew, and so did the competition, and so did the amount of people Bauxite-T-One was considering eating. But he had to lock in, find better ways to prove himself superiors - to jump oh-so-elegantly above that heightening bar. Like a beautiful, shimmering stallion. (which he was.)

Idly, it mimicked Wyrm's chirps. "What's FUCKING mean? What's FUCKING mean?" It was unclear if it shared her curiosity, or if he just wanted a new noise to make.

"FUCKING?"

He focused, something like intelligence stirring to life as a distant glint caught his eye. There were items of interest down below. How convenient, then, that the bridge came crumbling down to their level.

With the same effortless grace, the bauxite began to leap towards where the treasures lie. He hoped for something beautiful (horrifying) that would serve his greatest ambitions (eating people). Something that would put this rabble to shame.

@Wyrm (mentioned + mimicked)

RE: [Quest] The Training Dungeon - Volcanic Vents - Thalassa - Jun 07 2025

A familiar face sidled his way towards him. Thalassa offered a huff at his comment, unsure of how to react - annoyed was his main reaction, but it wasn't that it'd taking Rajani's jest seriously. No, it was anticipating the expectation that came with friendly acquaintances - that you would help them out when the going gets tough; And Thalassa was not the type for charity.

His attention turned rapidly from the tiger back to his magick, though, as he felt something shift in the air. Like a held breath. Moments later, rocks tumbled from above, hitting the place he would've been had he not stopped in his tracks.

Others had been less lucky. He noted Maw's shape disappearing in the cloud of dust and smoke. Thalassa offered her a shred of silent pity, before returning to the path ahead.

He did also note, with more interest this time, the misshapen Bauxite scouring the islands for something. What had this child seen? As he darted from rock to rock, he hoped to see it too.

@Rajani (brief mention/reaction)

RE: [Quest] The Training Dungeon - Volcanic Vents - V-Agate-One - Jun 09 2025

It would ignore most of the others, although it's gaze DID linger on Wyrm for a couple moments- her serpentine, inky body and profanity for cuss-words tipped it off- was this it's sibling from Canis? Although her companion- that small, rather edible looking lizard- mentioned an entirely different cave.

It was complementing walking over to ask when the ceiling cracked, a massive hunk of it plummeting down into the bridge. "FUCK!" It screamed as it fell, twisting cat-like as it fell and landing on a fragment of the shattered bridge. Now uncomfortably close to the lava, it was severely regretting its choice of tunnel.

It charged forward, scrambling across the islands of stone like a creature freshly aware of its mortality. It noticed another gembound nearby- the black and white tiger- and out of an impulsive desire to win and prevent others from doing so, it would veer close, attempting to channel it's magic to do... anything, really.

But in the heat of the moment it wasn't able to properly focus, and nothing happened. It would growl and glare at Rajani as though it was his fault, before moving on and slipping through the doorway up ahead.

@Rajani @Wyrm [mention]

RE: [Quest] The Training Dungeon - Volcanic Vents - Tourmaline - Jun 09 2025

She watches with horror as her senses scream. The cracking is oh-so-familiar, as the ceiling cleaves away. The bridge is reduced to rubble, floating on the magma or sitting in shallower areas. Tourmaline's eyes dart from island for island, wincing at someone thrown aside onto one of them. If only she'd could've done something for them.

Tourmaline takes a deep breath, using her still heightened senses to plot out her next steps. Sure paws, leaping from stone to stone, wincing at the intense heat. She can feel every hair and fur scream out in agony. But she needs to keep the magic up for a bit longer, until she is across.

And then there's also the toddlers parroting each other, shouting obscenities. Tourmaline's head is starting to pound listening to them scream. By the Spire, please shut up...

RE: [Quest] The Training Dungeon - Volcanic Vents - Rajani - Jun 09 2025

Everything seemed to happen way too fast, all at once. The bridge collapsed and, thankfully it seemed both him and Thalassa noticed something was wrong before it collapsed, along with a few others. He was able to jump to safety, turning to glance at Thalassa to check on them before his attention turned to the stranger staring him down.

Narrowing his eyes, he let out a soft, barely audible growl back, snorting softly as the creature walked past him. He wouldn't attack with no reason, no matter how much of a truculent creature it was. A flick of his tail showed his annoyance as he continued through the doorway, body tight and alert. However he seemed to keep around Thalassa for the most part, if they didn't walk off or tell him to leave.

RE: [Quest] The Training Dungeon - Volcanic Vents - Fahl - Jun 09 2025

For all of Fahl's burning impatience, he hadn't needed to wait for long. The sheer masses that had been headed inbound for a taste of the challenges offered by the dungeon long before he'd even heard of its existence guaranteed no more than a few heartbeats passed before another stalked toward the sweltering tunnel entrance. Then more followed, most focused more on traversing the path ahead than fully acknowledging potential teammates. Irritation prickled at being treated as a mere obstacle to step around, an outbreak of fiery dots bursting into view upon scales, yet none of this ire he voiced beyond a soft rumble within his throat. Call it age finally coloring his perception of the younger generation, but this latest development and the moments of ignorance displayed in cycles past was making it difficult not to perceive other, newer Gembounds as rather foolhardy and arrogant.

Of course, thinking this way also required ignoring his own stubborn childhood insistence on independence; still, the iguana remembered his excursion to the Black City as occurring alongside those willing to accept allies and collaborate before hurling themselves at the Kraken's merciless tentacles. Although they might've required Farina bailing them out in the final seconds of their legendary struggle, the coordination and cunning of a group and not the individual had whittled down the monster's strength.

Oh well. If the others wished to rush into whatever boiling drink awaited everyone, Fahl wouldn't waste his breath stopping them. Better to reserve his limited words for more receptive ears. The cat and the hooved beast sporting golden scales at least appeared open to a chat based off of their remarks. He determined to keep tabs on them should an incident demand more than just his magic to push through.

As Fahl huffed and descended farther into the tunnel, a chipper echo of his own vulgarly expressed sentiments rang nearby, overly familiar in its juvenile pitch. His walk on the stone bridge suspended over the threatening glow of lava slowed, and a cluster of alarmed thoughts battled to squeeze past a gemmed tongue upon finding himself staring at inquisitive eyes.

"What? Wyrm." White mottled his hide at the child's question while concern banished the warmer hues painted there, somber blues replacing them. "Well, fuck... ah, that's... a word to learn later." Or never—whenever he gathered the composure for explaining cusses learned from her much older half-sibling. More important was, "Does Dragon know you're here."

Perhaps the gator's style of parenting was lax enough that her slipping away was nothing out of the ordinary. The Children did seem to mind their own business often. Rarely had he ever witnessed more than a few gathered in a single place, most tending to personal endeavors he knew little about. Nevertheless, an intense urge made him almost conjure a rift right then and there to shove Wyrm into for safekeeping until he reached the end of this dungeon. He probably would've actually committed to the action if the shift of stone underfoot didn't seize all of his attention beforehand.

Rapid steps backed him away from the worst of the collapse and the quite unexpected overhead assault. Since she was beside him, Fahl hoped the niece he'd been introduced as honorary uncle to possessed enough sense to do the same. The sight of what used to have been the bridge floating in pieces amongst a sea of scorching pain caused his stomach to lurch in anticipation. A fateful instance had rendered an easy crossing into one decidedly less so. Anyone who continued to carry the guts to proceed forward would have to abandon caution in favor of speed lest they sink along with whichever island their paws settled upon.

Urgency kept him from meeting eyes with Wyrm again. However he clearly addressed her, tone brusque while gazing down at potential doom. "Keep close. We'll make it through this together."

Pure white light swelled upon his shoulders, unfurling into an ethereal set of wings. They were wispier than he'd have preferred, concentration leeched by the pressure of the time-sensitive situation, but surely their structure would prove decent enough to keep him aloft and away from harm. No further direction given, he leapt from stone to stone; constructed feathers aided him in sticking the land each time, their glide allowing toes to never skim lava, let alone dip into it.
