RE: FIRE & STONE - Game Master Dark - Jul 15 2026
The battle moved with him. Those humans who rushed in to try and stop him were cut off, cornered, and torn to pieces. A few held their own, for a time, and this often took the form of a cluster of armored shapes surrounded by one or two overeager Valkhounds who quickly learned the taste of blackened steel. A few fell, flesh torn too wide, their carcasses swiftly dissolving into thick black Oil. Inevitably, though, the humans were torn down.
The wall, too. Stone after stone melted away, sputtering with boiling acid, torn by Gravedigger's own claws.
The chaos had spread, both in magic and a literal sense. Black flames rose on one city horizon. The shudder of defiled earth cracked a district to the east. A cackling Valkhound dove down into the water reservoirs, and what had been clear if polluted by the battle now thickened and swirled with black.
The main gate began to creak and tilt as the wall collapsed to its left, Gravedigger's work efficient and effective.
Behind him, there was no organized resistance to attack him, personally. There was one soldier on a secondary wall, though, who had not forgotten his charge. Terrified, he stood his ground, and no one really noticed as he made his way to one of the remaining arbalests. Through the smoke and screams he turned it, aiming, his breath catching and his hands shaking.
He put Gravedigger in his sights as the massive monster tore at the city walls. He aimed down, and fired.
The single bolt, should it strike home, was not enough to kill. Scar, yes, but he'd need a follow-up. He'd need time, to load and fire. He'd need no one to notice him. To stop him.
And in the meantime, his wall was falling. His world was falling. The soldier tried to hold back his despair.

All your dreams are down below the gravedigger
It was preparing to move, to find a different part of the wall to destroy, perhaps to go deeper into the city to begin opening valkhound-sized doors into the most central areas, when a bolt zipped in from out of its vision and sunk into its shoulder.
The Gravedigger snarled in pain and stumbled back, looking over and seeing the wooden shaft sticking out of his thick skin. A bit of glowing orange blood was beginning to seep from the edge of the wound. His eyes followed to the place where it had come from, eyeing the human soldier that was readying another shot. No, that wouldn't do.
Perhaps the soldier thought he was safe up on the wall, away from the big monster with the big claws that chewed his walls down. After all, Gravedigger had no wings, little dexterity, and had no obvious ability to climb vertical surface. But he was, at the very least, mildly intelligent. And he yearned for blood, death, and violence.
The valkhound didn't take more then a couple of seconds to work out how to reach the soldier, reaching for the first solution it could think of - there was a chunk of the wall right near it, small enough to throw, large enough to kill (probably). It lunged forward and grabbed it in its jaws and turned its body to the side. Bracing its claws into the ground and eyeing the spot the soldier was standing on, it pushed into the earth and swung its head to the side with all its might, releasing the rubble at the moment it thought was right, sending a piece of broken stone, sizzling with its glowing saliva, right at the place the soldier was standing.

The huge hunk of broken stone shot up and forward, and the lone soldier on the ballista had no chance to react bar a brief shift in his expression. Terrified determination, desperation even, changed to surprise as the rock sailed into him. His armor caved in, his bones behind it, a spray of blood erupting from his mouth as he was thrown backward and pinned into the mud behind him. He sank down, choking, scrabbling weakly with his hands, his legs no longer moving. He stared up and blinked at the sky as if trying to figure out what had just happened to him.
He was dying, albeit somewhat slowly; one could leave him to it, or offer some mercy in a quick death. He'd die, either way.
Near to Gravedigger, a lanky Valkhound (something like a black wolf with an almost giraffe-length neck) swivelled its gaze from the ballista to Gravedigger. It was grinning; it had started for the soldier before Gravedigger had handled it himself. "Nice shot," it rasped, and lifted one of four forelimbs, offering three thumbs-up at once.
Another monster, this one sinuous and hard to see--Oilslicked and serpentine--crept up alongside it. "We're nearly done here, I think. City's almost ours." It exchanged a glance with the wolfish one, who shrugged. Both of them looked to Gravedigger. "Once we take it, uh. What next?" it asked.

All your dreams are down below the gravedigger
The crunch of the bones and the smell of fresh blood in the air was like a brief drug high, surging through the valkhounds veins and singing sweet melodies to the corruption boiling in its muscles. It sneered glancing at the one that complimented its shot. Its head raised, jaws cracked open and glowing, as if it were smiling.
It was going to turn and throw itself back into the battle, to perhaps bite through more of these pathetic little humans, but it paused when the question of "what next" fell on its shoulders. The Gravedigger blinked, some of its whiskers twitching as it realized that the valkhounds were looking at it expectantly, as if they waited for him to tell them what to do.
"Um." Was his beautifully thought-out response after a moment. He glanced towards the main citadel, which was already starting to be bombarded with black fire and lashes of lightning and large oily things scaling the sides. It didn't know what they were supposed to do next, it only knew violence and war and it had to pull itself out of its own eruption for a brief moment to even form words properly. "Well. Um. Are there more of these here?" Claw gestured to the stone. "Walls with people in them. We could find more. After we wreck everything here." It didn't like the thought that there would even be a time where it wasn't wrecking shit anymore, so deeply addled by the corruption. But, it supposed, it would happen eventually, before it was thrust back into war.

The battle wasn't over, of course. There were still screams, shouts. There were still others racing past, monsters that were nothing but a flash of ominous color in the thickening smoke. But for now, a few of them were gathering here: following Gravedigger, looking to him expectantly, grinning.
Maybe in time, some of those claws and teeth and urges to violence would grow bored, and the Valkhounds would turn on one another. But for now... "Well, there's the... What's the word," one said, reaching down and taking a sword from a dead soldier's hand. It took two tugs to yank it free of the grip, and then he used it to pick a piece of gore from between his jagged teeth, looking thoughtful. "Civilians? Bunch of the non-fighty people. Easy pickings, but we have to get through the walls and doors," he added, firing Gravedigger a meaningful glance. That was what he was good at. "Then there's... what was that other city?" and he turned to another creature behind him.
She was sinuously sleek, like a black leopard scaled up a hundred times and covered in spines and weirdly prominent veins that pulsed violet, and she shrugged too. Her speech pattern was short and staccato. "Dead already. I think. This city's enemy. Camps. Fires. Outside. No real walls. And their army," she added, glancing around.
The first translated. "Ha, yeah. This city marched out to fight them, I think. We killed them out there and the other city too. So this is the main one left, but..." he trailed off, and shrugged again. "We can probably find other stuff to kill."

Ah yes, the civilians. They should go eat them too, right? They had been trained and instructed to kill and destroy so they should spare no one. Gravedigger looked down at the ground with a tilt of his head. "Right. There were tunnels beneath, lots of people down there, but some got in and probably killed them already. But there might be more." They could go find those and wreck them too, but one of them mentioned the citadel and the Gravedigger's eyes were moving towards that main tower again.
Heat flared in its belly at the thought of the further destruction it could sow. Its claws itched to get them back into stone and it took a step forward. "Okay. Lets fuck up the civilians then. And get in that castle." Everything else could be talked about when the fighting was over and they could figure out what was next. Perhaps when they were done, they'd be picked up and thrown somewhere else to fight. Gravedigger didn't know, it hadn't really been told what happened when this was all done.
But the other valkhounds looked eager and ready to fight more. And there was still enough fighting happening that they were missing out on. So it turned and began to lead the way towards the keep. Its head was lowered as it charged, each step as long a stride as it could. It intended on barelling its way forward, using the armored head as defense as it made it way towards the side of the wall where it would lay siege.

Off he went! A force of supernatural power, of searing heat and acidic lava, of massive claws and Chaos itself!
...Nobody else followed.
After a minute a few of the Valkhounds exchanged glances. One cleared their throat.
"Gravedigger?" came the tentative call, from behind him. Should he glance back toward the milling Valkhounds--their gazes hopeful, expectant, and a little bit confused--one would point a slender talon off to the left. "The civilians are this way."
Underground. The keep--far off ahead--was a low-slung, ugly structure, more a bunker than anything else. Thick pipes rose from all sides, belching black smoke. But the other way were the vault-like doors, built into the earth, that led to the civilian shelters. The long halls and rooms underground. The Valkhounds would, of course, gladly lead Gravedigger in that direction. There weren't a lot of active defenders left to fight back; just smoke and blood and muddied earth, all mingled together.
And once the vault doors were pried up, or dug around? The slaughter could begin. A couple of the monsters alongside Gravedigger were already grinning at the prospect.

He paused, glancing back. Tiny eyes blinked as it turned its head to see why they weren't following.
Ah. Wrong way.
Embaressement flooded the valkhound as it realized it had completely missed where this entrance had been obviously sitting and immediately excuses started boiling to the surface. He couldn't see very well! The main "keep" really looked like it was built to hold people! It was in the center of the city! But it didn't really matter and he swiftly squashed them down. "Oh." was all he said as he changed course.
He eyed the vault. Doors? Stupid. Doors would not stop him.
He didn't charge for them, knowing that any vault entrance would be the most heavily protected. Instead, he began digging at the ground in front of them, saliva pouring from his jaws to break the rocks down faster. He was swift, eager to make up for his lapse in...judgment? Momentary stupidity? Whatever that had been. Within a couple of minutes, he began to breach the edges of the tunnel leading towards the civilians. This was going to be fun.
