His voice was a croon, and his hand as it swept out was a blur; the iced mace vanished and in its place, drawn from the Collector's robe, was a gemstone on a chain. It was translucent, this stone: a carefully-cut rock, its faceted surface glinting, its interior one of bright clarity. It shone with the colors of sky and sea, and as the Collector reached to gently loop it over Comet's neck, it almost felt like clouds were already beginning to gather.

This pendant, when worn, causes constant rain to fall in whichever cave it is currently in. In larger caves this may be restricted to an area within about three hundred yards. It will cause a drizzle in dry, hot caves, and torrential downpours in damp ones.

"An interesting choice," he said, and immediately went to put a shield over his head.

The shield formed sluggishly and he sighed, thankful it had at all. He didn't particularly wish to get wet.

"Thank you, Collector," he said, dread welling up in his stomach, his face grim.

He didn't like the sound of this necklace. Rain all the time? Inconvenient, definitely. Being wet all the time could cause rain rot. Not a nice thing to have, certainly. But potential storms...

The image of her stone lost somewhere in a cave made him shiver again.

Comet reached out her head to allow the Collector to place the necklace around her neck. It was pretty light, and didn't feel like it added any weight. That was good, she was worried it would strain her neck too much, but luckily was small.

She would take it off though when she wanted some peace and quiet. Having rain follow you wherever you went wasn't exactly the most convenient. Though there was the issue of lessers coming to try and steal it, she was sure that by burying it in a hole it would be pretty safe.

"Thanks!" This was much less dangerous than the mace... maybe. Hopefully James approved of this, it certainly didn't have any dangerous spikes sticking out of it.

The Collector offered a deep incline of his head--a half-bow, really--and then vanished. His voice echoed forth from where he had stood:

"Ta ta."

And then, nothing.

... Comet should have kept the mace. A mace wasn't the potential for a raging storm every hour of Comet's day. A mace was awkward to use and that should have been a deterrent all by itself, but now she had an artifact that could cause chaos if it decided to.

The life of his child was in some stupid necklaces' hands, and he hated that.

"We need to talk when we're home," James said, turning to head back, his ears pinned and his chest tight.

He was holding back tears at this point, the worry and the fear for his only daughter so great that he almost couldn't breathe. The urge to yell at her to take it back to the Collector was great, but he couldn't. He couldn't yell at Comet. He almost didn't think his voice could reach such pitches anyway.

The collector disappeared with a bow, and Comet was left with James. "This necklace is better than a mace, right renny?" she hoped that he would be happy now that she had traded it for something else, but his tense voice and body language told her otherwise.

Comet had done something bad, she had upset her father, and it made her sad. What had she done? Was trading the mace for this necklace a mistake? "Okay." that conversation would not be a very good one, she could tell already. But they had to return home first.

"Exit Comet to home"
