RE: Darkness to Darkness [Hatching] - mayfal - Aug 21 2020 Take a break. That's just another way of saying give up. Mayfal couldn't give up. If this were really a fight there wouldn't be a break. "Go back to where you were," Mayfal spat, "I'm not done yet." Mayfal was already shaking, but they were standing now. They could keep going! @Comet RE: Darkness to Darkness [Hatching] - Comet - Aug 21 2020 Comet
@Mayfal RE: Darkness to Darkness [Hatching] - mayfal - Aug 22 2020 Defeat was indeed better than dying, but so was staying alive. Mayfal inhaled, allowing their body to regain its energy, its strength, and latching onto the key scent again. Mayfal could smell and hear Comet clearly, but that still didn't seem to be enough. They needed to feel Comet, somehow, from a distance. Maybe they could feel her warmth, since they knew it like they knew her taste. She wasn't to far from Mayfal either, so there must be warmer air closer to her location. The warmth would also be a quicker indicator than smell. They used this peculiar triangulation technique and thought of a new strategy. One came to mind rather quickly. Why not use their impairment as an advantage? If they went in a different direction than where they knew Comet was, they could catch her off guard. Mayfal might actually be able to catch her! But it would be tricky, especially with how tired they had become. It was still worth a shot for the practice of it at least. Mayfal turned slightly to the right of where Comet was waiting... and leapt. @Comet RE: Darkness to Darkness [Hatching] - Comet - Aug 22 2020 Comet
Comet breathed heavily along with Mayfal, neither of them striking just yet. They were both gaining energy. She saw that not only was the fox readying for their next strike, they were also thinking of something, a new strategy perhaps? She stored her energy in her legs, for she knew that the next move was an offensive one, so she was prepared to meet them in the air, as they liked jumping. When Mayfal jumped, she jumped at the same time, but towards the right, so she missed completely. Comet turned around for the next move. @Mayfal RE: Darkness to Darkness [Hatching] - mayfal - Aug 23 2020 It was working! Mayfal had heard Comet moving and she was closer to them now. This would make the next step much easier. While Comet was preparing her next move, they'd continue with theirs. A continuous, uninterrupted flow. At least, that had been the idea. Mayfal turned back towards the sound of Comet landing on the ground and leapt forward again. In the commotion, though, they had miscalculated somewhere. Forgot something. Felt the heat brush right past them and then tasted dirt. @Comet RE: Darkness to Darkness [Hatching] - Comet - Aug 23 2020 Comet
Comet was surprised that a fox, and a blind one at that, that had just hatched from their chrysalis on the very day was doing so well. At this point, she realized that it was not physical strength that was going to get her the win, it was magic. There was one thing that wasn't detectable with hearing, smell, or heat. It was water. And that happened to be the magic she possessed. Water was a slippery thing, and since the fox was blind they would not be able to see where it was. The water flowed out, obeying her command. Now the clearing was changed, what was once just a plain field was now dotted with puddles of water. Slippery, and nearly undetectable. @Mayfal RE: Darkness to Darkness [Hatching] - mayfal - Aug 23 2020 Mayfal got their head out of the dirt and spat a little. Their near flawless plan had gone so wrong! Oh well, there were other things to try. They took a step forward to get some balance but it was...wet?! It hadn't been like this before! What had happened? Instead of gaining balance, Mayfal lost it again. This simply wouldn't do. They couldn't fight while constantly slipping. Damn this blindness! If only they could SEE the wet areas! Mayfal's frustration was prevalent in their wrinkled muzzle, bared teeth, and soft growl. Sight was never going to happen. They had to be smarter about this. Clearly this was the work of magic, and they had magic, too. They wouldn't have to worry about slipping on water if the water was gone before they took the next step. @Comet RE: Darkness to Darkness [Hatching] - Comet - Aug 23 2020 Comet
Comet smiled in success when she saw that her plan had worked. The fox was unable to detect the puddles and was slipping around in them. She was a bit worried about Mayfal's frustration though, she didn't want to anger the fox, it was just a friendly spar. Then she saw the fox use the fire paws spell again, so every time they stepped in a puddle their paws would just evaporate the water. Smart. She hadn't thought of that. But that spell had a limit to how much water it could evaporate, she just needed to lure Mayfal into a place with more water. Unfortunately, she could detect nothing. And that was moments wasted. @Mayfal RE: Darkness to Darkness [Hatching] - mayfal - Aug 23 2020 Mayfal, bathing in steam, had solid yet isolated ground. They could feel heat all around them, so their next attack wouldn't be so accurate. And from the sound and smell of it, Comet didn't seem to be moving either. They needed to get closer, but that would make them vulnerable. However, they could cloak themself in steam by evaporating more of the puddles. Then they could get close with cover. They wouldn't be able to tell if it had worked though. Oh, the irony. Mayfal continued walking slowly towards Comet's scent. Maintaining the spell was difficult, but necessary. @Comet RE: Darkness to Darkness [Hatching] - Comet - Aug 23 2020 Comet
Comet had not prepared for the other side effect: steam. Now she was blind in this place, which gave Mayfal the upper hand. Her sight would not work. The pressure was really getting to her, what to do, what to do? She decided to continue with her previous strategy, to find water. She would have to use that sense and follow it to where it led, blind or not. Once she caught the sense of water, she ran towards it, not caring if there were any trees in her way. @Mayfal |
