RE: [Ursa Assault] Cry Havoc... - Nemo - Feb 26 2021 The alarm calls have him looking back, red glare coasting over the small militia behind him with as keen an eye as one can have in raging winds, and he makes a small note to himself to refresh his winds in the storm. It took only one event for him to learn that he is no match against the squalls of the caves. Nemo is used to being exposed in the air, and as a predator he has no natural awareness of being watched... but he can recognize the negative points of exposure to the wailing winds and potential enemies nearby. Any strategizing is cut short by the large, bubbling, and very angry looking one of the lot launching herself into the sky and he throws up his wings to throw himself backwards, narrowly avoiding the Sleepless Chaos as she raged into the skies. Being forced to drop back forces him to take a closer look at everyone in the group, and he lets out a worried call as he notices the pain in the staggering of Giggle's gait. She didn't seem to get struck, but considering that they're up against a formless enemy it makes his feathers crawl when he considers the possibility she'd been hurt already... and so overhead he remains, instead of before the group. Any nearby Lesser would do well to avoid his eyes and talons. Or just. Avoid his magic, and with that idea he whips together another burst of energy in the hopes of striking some Lessers nearby into the path of the warriors below him, or into the maws of... whatever the Hydra is flying around with the goop monster in it's claws. RE: [Ursa Assault] Cry Havoc... - Game Master Dark - Feb 27 2021 Despite the distinct feeling of exposure--of being out in the open, with no cover at all--the group pressed on. Despite the evidence that Mother knew they were coming, they pressed on.
Nemo's blast of air swept several Mountain Sparrows, tumbling, into the group's path. The rest could deal with these as they so chose--if they had the time... Those watching closely from the air--Draconua, Nidhogg and Zhusha--would see it first: a massive plume of snow, like a geyser, in the distance. It seemed to plow along the ground, arrowing toward the group, then vanish some fifty yards away; what could cause such a thing? Those watching magically from the ground--Tahi-shei with his Grey Sense, Pride with Gem Sense--would note something deep below the ground streaking toward them at high speed. Pride would sense only a living gemstone; Tahi-shei would sense something enormous, something clotted and webbed with fungus. Twisted would feel it: a faint vibration, growing rapidly stronger, beneath her cat's paws. There were only seconds to react: the creature, whatever it was, crossed the distance in a flash. It aimed for the largest vibration sense in the ground: Wyvern, trudging through the snow. ![]() The ground erupted beneath the parrot-dragon, the earth shattering and snow pluming up in blinding clouds. Mandibles clamped into her body, and only briefly visible was the deadly beak and steely skin. Then it was sinking back away, dragging its hapless prey straight back down with it. Wyvern is the target of the attacking Ice Worm, and is severely wounded in the initial attack; however, given her large size, she may roll to free herself and escape its grasp. Should she fail, she will be dragged back into the hole the Ice Worm has formed, gripped in its beak and mandibles. The following Gembound have rolled successful Perception and may notice the Ice Worm incoming with seconds to spare. They are out of danger, and can move away from the incoming attack and make any attack they choose on the Ice Worm as it erupts: Tahi-shei, Twisted, Pride, Draconua, Nidhogg, and Zhusha. Marshmallow may also take any action, being safe on Tahi-shei's back. All others present must roll to avoid being tumbled down the Ice Worm's hole as it drops back beneath the ground, except Nemo, who is safe by virtue of being in the air, and may take any action chosen. Given the results of the post timing Poll here, the next GM post to this thread will be posted in four days (March 4th). @Tahi-shei (Sora) @Madhukar @Twisted @Marshmallow @Nemo @Reign @Pride (Giggle, Nidhogg) @Draconua @Wyvern (Zhusha) @Esther RE: [Ursa Assault] Cry Havoc... - Tahi-shei - Feb 27 2021 Tahi-shei was well aware that they were out in the open. As far as he was concerned, this was their only real option. Danger was just part of the equation.
He had not been expecting a giant worm to come at them from the bottom. He sensed it, first -- something big and filled with fungus. "BELOW--!" Tahi-shei shouted, already scrambling away from its path. "SCATTER!" he roared, just a beat too late for anyone to properly react. Split-second calculations filled his mind -- will this work? will I hear her? can I maintain it? would something else be better? before he reacted. And yet, no spores came to meet him. He let out a cry of frustration, his head whipping around wildly -- he was blind. He couldn't see, he didn't know if anyone was okay, if Madhukar was okay, if-- FOCUS, snapped a voice in his mind, and he let a shiver run through him. "COUNT OFF!" he demanded, a tinge of desperation in his voice. "WHAT HAPPENED?" In all honestly, Tahi-shei... barely knew. He was panicking, just barely, and couldn't help himself from calling out, "MADHUKAR?" He couldn't lose her. He couldn't. Suddenly, he was struck by how foolish he'd been to bring her here -- risking his own life was one thing, but risking hers, well, that was another. He needed her, in combat and in his own life -- destroying this infection meant the world to him, but what was the world without the ones he loved in it? His first friend, the parent of one of his children? What about my children? He breathed out sharply through his nose. "Marshmallow -- help me, what happened?" @madhukar and @marshmallow spoken to RE: [Ursa Assault] Cry Havoc... - Esther - Feb 27 2021 Esther, far too distracted with the snow, was not one of the ones to notice the ice worm coming at the group at top-speeds. They only noticed when the ground rumbled beneath and one of the group members was attacked - they weren't able to get out of the way before the ground underneath their claws was rumbling and sinking of all things. The gembound ignored the others around them (despite one being obviously injured, if smell gave anything away), to try and save themselves instead of stick around to get buried. They flared out their wings in an attempt to balance and fly up, but the maned wolf had no idea what they would do if they got stuck there. RE: [Ursa Assault] Cry Havoc... - Sora - Feb 27 2021
RE: [Ursa Assault] Cry Havoc... - Zhusha - Feb 27 2021
He spotted it from the air: a plume of snow driving toward the group, bigger than anything he had ever seen. No enemies were visible from behind its cover, but it must have been an entire army to create such a—
It disappeared beneath the snow. Equal parts dread and contempt boiled up Zhusha's throat. Some sort of stealth maneuver—? Was the enemy a coward too? But then the deer was calling out a warning, and the snow beneath the group moved. He barely had a second to honk out an alarm cry before the bird-dragon was caught in its jaws. The glimpse he had gotten of the beast told him that it was massive, perhaps ten times his length if its proportions were that of a typical worm. Real fear spiked through his blood, but Wyvern's cry of pain cut through all else. She might die, Zhusha realized with horror, and though they were all total strangers to him, his decision was already made. With another piercing honk, he dove at the ice worm's receding form. It was a struggle to keep on course once he left the lammergeier's jetstream, and he had to fight just to avoid being tossed off target by the wind. So focused was Zhusha on his self-appointed task that he barely noticed Esther taking to the sky, or Tahi-shei's command to scatter—though if he had, rash and fresh to the world of battle as he was, he might have called the maned wolf a coward. But there was no time for that now. No time for anything but Wyvern and the worm. Zhusha reached it just as it began to sink away, knife-like beak first. If he could drive it into a gap in its carapace, or even just be enough of a nuisance that it was distracted from its target—hopefully that would be enough to give the bird-dragon an opportunity to make her escape. Draconua veered toward it (uncaring of her cargo) in a sharp downstroke, and then pinwheeled back. When the great beast broke earth, her head snapped toward it. Without a moment's hesitation, wings stooped inward, and she dove. Thirty-some feet before impact, they snapped outward, seemingly tearing in the wild wind as they just barely slowed her descent. Twenty feet, and her jaws were spread wide in a shrieking roar. Fifteen feet, the Sleepless Chaos carelessly tossed Nidhogg away from herself. Ten feet, and hooked talons reached outward. Five feet, and magic lashed out for the very earth the worm inhabited— —and, incidentally, where many were squirming to get out of and away from; where Wyvern was presently about to be swallowed. ... no matter, as long as she got her wicked teeth (and perhaps some shards of corruptive, black stone) into her new target. She cared not for the Gembound surrounding her, tumbling into the hole she'd shaken and widened and placed corrupted-black stone at the bottom of. ![]() RE: [Ursa Assault] Cry Havoc... - Nidhogg - Feb 27 2021
RE: [Ursa Assault] Cry Havoc... - Giggle - Feb 27 2021 Wyvern came to her. Right up beside her, offering aid. Giggle peered at her, wearily. "I'm all right, for now. Thanks, though," she added, briefly studying this kindly stranger and wondering about their heritage. Then someone cried out. She squinted against the snow, shivering a little; the alarm calls going out gave her only seconds to react. Even so, how could she react-? She didn't know where the danger would come fr- The snow erupted beside her. RIGHT beside her. She caught the briefest glimpse of massive fangs, of something snagging the giant Gembound who'd just so gently offered aid--and then the ground was collapsing beneath her. Oh shit, oh shit, oh shitohshitohshIT- The hyena turned, scrambling for the collapsing bank, dark eyes wide. Along the link she felt Omen shrieking, asking what was wrong but there was no time to answer, and there was no reassurance to give--was she about to die? For an instant it felt as though she hung midair, muscled neck and forelimbs working to haul her back up before the ground collapsed beneath, the world gone muffled and silent past the thud of her heart and her gasp for air. Then the lip had given way, and the earth was rupturing around her as she fell, and black chaos was curling through the hole that swept up around her. Oh SHIT-
