RE: Darkness to Darkness [Hatching] - mayfal - Aug 23 2020

The attack had turned into a chase. Comet was...running away? But hunting had finished already.

Whether the fight was still going or not, it would still probably be best to follow her. And maybe learning to run around a place like this would be a good idea, too.

Mayfal set off, led by the sound of Comet's footfall.

Comet
Arctic Wolf
Comet pricked her left ear to hear the sound of the rapid paw steps behind her. It was working! Mayfal was following her, and hopefully she would be able to make it to the water that she had sensed. She wasn't sure if the fox knew how to swim, but did, so if Mayfal did start drowning she would be able to help. She could tell she was close now, and jumped. She paws broke through the surface of the pond and she turned around to see if the fox followed.

Mayfal heard a splash. Comet's scent had disappeared. This could only mean that they had been lead to a pool of water deep enough to hide Comet. Mayfal would be completely useless underwater. Their senses would be drowned out and they would be at their most vulnerable.

They tried putting their paws on the water to see if heat would be of any use. It wouldn't be. Mayfal couldn't possibly evaporate this much water.

They sat down. Comet had to emerge at some point. Until then, Mayfal could wait. They kept their ears pricked and their nose active. They still had power on land as long as they stayed alert.

But there was so much sound! And the smells were all blending together! Their ears were flipping back and forth and their head lifted to try and pinpoint the various scents.

They had stopped paying attention to the water entirely.

Comet watched and waited. She left only her nose above water to breathe. Eventually, the steam had cleared away to reveal Mayfal, who was was waiting patiently at the bank. But her senses must've distracted her, because she wasn't focused, making her an almost easy target. Her body emerged from the water and leaped directly towards her.

NOOOOO! How could this have happened! Why didn't they stay alert? Damn this BLINDNESS!

Had this been real, with perilous stakes, they would be dead. Dead, dead, dead! If they couldn't fight, they would constantly live in danger. They had to keep fighting!

The sopping wet Comet was on top of them. Not an ideal situation but Mayfal could feel every move now. They just needed a distraction to let them get free. It probably wasn't a great idea for simple sparring, but in the heat of the moment, they went for the face.

Comet felt herself land right on Mayfal. Great aim! She was worried that she might have squished the fox a bit, but before she got off she felt the fox's sharp claws go for her face! Luckily their blindness made the hits miss, and she pushed them away. "Okay, I think that is enough sparring for today." Comet stood up. "Let's head back to your new home now, we can take a break there before I leave."

It was probably best that Mayfal missed. And they were feeling pretty tired. Maybe some rest wouldn't be so bad. There wasn't any real danger yet as far as they could tell.

"Yeah, okay." They didn't want to sound so reluctant, but they were a little disappointed at their own performance.

There would always be next time. They would spar again. That fact made Mayfal a little happier. They got up and faced the direction of Comet's voice.

Comet could sense the disappointment in their voice, but she wasn't sure if it was because they wanted to keep sparring or if they were upset with themselves. So, it was best not to say anything. The last time she did, she thought about how she had accidentally angered them.

She watched the fox get up and and face her. Oh, she had forgotten they were blind. Once again, she brushed her tail against their muzzle so they could take hold.

Comet's warm tail brushed across their face once again. Even when it was wet, it had become comforting.

Mayfal had a general idea of where Comet was headed, so it would be easier to follow the path this time around. There were still some larger rocks and roots, though, and by the time they arrived at the little home their paws were rather sore. They decided to retreat to the water that surrounded the place. It seemed to have healing properties. Or at least it just had a soothing effect.

"Thank you, again," they were in debt to this creature now. They had to be respectful. "And I'm sorry for trying to scratch you."

Once Comet felt their teeth close in on her tail, she started on the slow trek back to the house. They were a bit faster this time, and she was sure that with practice Mayfal would soon be able to travel through the forest without any trouble. Once they made it back to the house, she watched the fox go into the water. Comet smiled, it had been a good idea to put in that addition after all.

She dipped her head at the fox's thanks, then remembered once again that they couldn't see. "Oh, it's okay. You're welcome." From when she had first met this fox, she had come to like them very much like a friend. "I'll visit you often!" And with that said, Comet left for home.

"Exit Comet to home"
