i'm not a man of substance and so i'll pretend to be a wanderer, wandering - Aaliyah - Jun 16 2021

Li was lost.

Lost, and so, so tired. She wanted to retreat back into her chrysalis. Wanted to go back in and never come out again. But she was here now, so she figured she may as well do a bit of exploring.

Turns out, there was a lot to explore.

In the cycles upon cycles - or so she guessed - that she had been gone, the caves seemed to have changed a lot. New tunnels that seemed to lead to new caves. She was hesitant to go into any, unsure of what may await her. But eventually, curiosity pulled her closer, and she found herself in a tunnel she didn’t recognize.

Crystals were all around her, showing her reflection, albeit a little distorted. She walked stiffly through it, eyes trapped on the wooden planks she walked on. She didn’t like looking at her reflection. She didn’t want to see her scars or her likeness to Imperia. Nor did she want to see how much of a mess she surely looked. And from a quick glance, she confirmed that. Her fur hadn’t been groomed in who knew how long, yet she didn’t have the energy to groom it. She didn’t care.

So yes, Li looked like a miserable mess. Messy, dirty fur stretched over her, ribs visible. Long ears lowered, her long tail dragging against the ground behind her. Paws barely rising enough to take a step. Eyes firmly fixed far away from the crystals that surrounded her. She just had to hope no one would see her like this. Maybe once she went into the new cave, she’d find some long lost burst of energy that would allow her to groom herself or maybe even hunt.

Or maybe she’d just continue to wander, see what the new caves had to offer.

RE: i'm not a man of substance and so i'll pretend to be a wanderer, wandering - Zhusha - Jun 19 2021

If Zhusha was being honest with himself, he was long overdue for a visit to Canis. He hadn't visited the Bonebound since first having dinner with them cycles ago. In fact, he'd been rather derelict in keeping up with all of his acquaintances. Purity and the Queen, too, he'd not seen in a long time. He would add those to his itinerary, then, prioritizing the Maine Coon.

Stepping into the tunnel--he wouldn't risk flying in here, with the myriad reflections to disorient him--Zhusha wondered briefly who had placed the planks on the floor. They'd been awfully considerate--or perhaps they'd done it for a payment of some sort? Would it be worth decorating these? he wondered, eyeing the plain brown wood, then decided the tunnel was bright and confusing enough already. A shame.

A bedraggled cat came into view as he travelled further into the tunnel. Zhusha slowed, a slight frown crossing his face as he tried to figure out what to make of her. A threat, perhaps corrupted by the same magic Purity had delved into? Or someone who had been on the receiving end of a threat? The latter, he decided quickly. She looked too tired and defeated to be anything else.

"Do you need help?" he asked bluntly, still staying well behind her in case she startled. It was more a rhetorical question than anything--clearly, she wasn't doing great and hadn't been for a while, judging from the ribs jutting out. The real questions were of how to help and does she want help.

And what should he do if she didn't? Zhusha wasn't sure.

Li jumped upon hearing a voice, long ears immediately perking and swiveling in the direction it had come from. She looked behind her and saw a gembound she had never seen before, though that in itself was not surprising. She watched them warily, turning around fully in order to face the bird. She took half a step back, hardly even aware she was doing so.

She eyed the bird for a moment before responding. The familiar smell of cinnabar made her nose twitch, and her thoughts turned briefly to Livius. She hoped they were okay, and wondered if the group they had formed was still around. Maybe she'd go check out Orion, see if she could find anything about it. But for now, she had to focus on the bird in front of her.

What had he asked? If she wanted help? That was quite the question, wasn't it? Remnants of her upbringing made her cautious of accepting help, Imperia always drilling into her that doing so was weak. But she was. She is weak. Anyone could see that. She remembers being in a similar position, not long after separating from Imperia. Amras had saved her then. She wonders how he's doing now.

She shook her head briefly to clear her thoughts. She had to stop thinking of the past - she'd been asked a question, and she didn't want to waste their time by taking forever to respond. "I, uh-" and oh, right. Li's voice still had that raspy quality to it. She coughed, briefly, though she knew that wouldn't help it. She'd just have to live with a permanent rasp to her voice and hope anything she spoke could still be heard clearly. "I, um. Yes. Please," she added the last one as sort of an afterthought. She didn't know if the bird would be hostile at all, but it surely wouldn't hurt to at least be polite to them.

A pause, and he waited patiently for the cat to respond. Taking into account her condition--the myriad scars all over, the face that looked more tired than anyone he had seen, the look of distracted defeat--Zhusha could hardly blame her for taking a while, and he wondered what in the world had happened to her.

Even her voice, when she spoke, showed the signs of wear. As if she were sick, or a fire had burned it. Though his rigid beak was not all that good at showing expression, Zhusha's concern deepened. At least she had agreed to accept help, though he was not sure how much he could give. Food, at least, he could catch, provided she ate the fish or mice he usually hunted. He had no idea what to do about sickness or how to heal any wounds. Danger was an iffy thing--he could fight, yes, but was he better at it than this cat? Enough to fend off whatever danger she might have faced?

"What do you need?" he asked, stepping closer to a more comfortable speaking distance now that it was clear she wasn't hostile. "I can show you water, or bring you prey," he offered. Pausing for a moment, he added: "Were you harmed by someone?" If they were still around, he would need to keep an eye out in case they turned on others. And perhaps this would be a reason to seek out Purity once more, to keep their promise to one another.

Li flicked an ear and watched carefully as they stepped closer. Her ears remained perked, constantly on alert. At the prospect of water and food, she took a slight step closer, her wariness forgotten for a moment. "Y-yes, please. Water. And, and food."

At their next question, she stiffened, tail flicking slightly. How could she explain this to them? Did she even want to? Li didn't even know where Imperia was these days. Were they still around, wreaking havoc? Had they gone back into their chrysalis as she had done? She didn't know and it worried her. What if she ran into them again? The last time certainly hadn't gone well, but at least she had done well for herself then. But if Imperia saw her now, weak and barely holding on...

"I-I, I don't..." she huffed quietly, willing the words to just work for once. "L-Long time ago. I-I don't know if they're, uh, still around." She just had to hope they weren't. And...even if they were, the caves had expanded greatly, so maybe they wouldn't run into each other. Maybe it'd be okay.

Zhusha nodded briefly before walking forward toward Gemini, gesturing with a wing as he went. "There is both in the cave ahead--this is a short tunnel; we will be there soon." He'd considered going back toward Polaris, too. The river was deeper and accommodated larger fish, but it was also fast-moving with steep banks. He wasn't sure if the cat could safely drink from it, and decided that Gemini's gentler waterfall would be better.

Meanwhile, he focused on his magic, trying to call up something she could eat on the way. Magic was not his strong suit--but this was a relatively simple spell. It succeeded with a small pop, and he offered the banana to Aaliyah. "A snack," he suggested. "Until we reach Gemini."

He considered Aaliyah's words. Zhusha didn't want to trust that it had been long enough ago that they had died by now, or that they were hibernating somewhere. If whoever it was had done this to this cat--then they were dangerous, and the best thing to do was make sure the danger was rooted out.

But there was also plenty of danger in the world, and trying to chase down one person without any sort of clue as to who or where they were wasn't the smartest plan to make it safer. "Can you describe them?" he asked as they walked. "I would like to keep an eye out."

Li looked over at the entrance to the cave. She was a little apprehensive about going in, wondering if it would be better to stick to the familiarity of Polaris, but there was a curiosity within her still. She wanted to see what the new cave was like, and perhaps with someone by her side, it wouldn't be too bad.

The bird paused for a moment, and she wondered if he was attempting magic. The thought immediately caused her to stiffen, though she had just started to relax only moments earlier. Even now, cycles and cycles after she had used her magic or even seen anyone else use it, it still made her wary. When she saw only a banana pop out, she tried to shake off her paranoia. It was fine, everything was fine. "Thank you," she said quietly, then quickly ate the banana. It wasn't much, but it helped keep her mind off her hunger, and would certainly do until she could have a bit more.

When they continued speaking, she paused, trying to collect her thoughts. "They look...um, sort of like me. A cat. Darker fur color, more pronounced facial markings. Uh...they're shorter than me." That was one thing she always found sort of amusing. Something that bothered Imperia to no end. Even so, while Li was taller, Imperia always knew how to make her feel small. "I'm tall, but they're sort of...uh, stocky? They've got a short tail. Lots of scars." She hoped that would suffice. Thinking about Imperia was starting to make their fur rise a little, and they tried to flatten it. Hopefully neither of them would come across Imperia.

RE: i'm not a man of substance and so i'll pretend to be a wanderer, wandering - Zhusha - Jul 08 2021

Zhusha nodded at Aaliyah's description, trying to commit it to memory. Similar in appearance--but darker, stockier, and with just as many scars. He hoped he would be able to remember well--it was difficult to visualize someone through only words, and perhaps more difficult to recall it cycles later. There had been rumors going around of a deer teaching people to do something called 'reading' and 'writing': recording words through markings. Zhusha would have liked to attend, but there was one problem: the deer appeared to be affiliated with the Giant Chaotic Monster Organization. That was, the Chaos Forge.

Did Zhusha believe that the monsters had changed for the better, and were now offering help out of charity to the caves? Hell no. But he didn't know Astraea--maybe he was like Giggle, and was a good person who just happened to associate with Nidhogg, Draconua, and the rest of them. He would have to find out more, and possibly think about... alternatives.

But he'd let his mind wander enough. "I'll watch out for this cat," he promised as they approached the Gemini entrance. "Do you have a preference for prey? Fish? Rodents?" Cats ate meat, he was pretty sure. Zhusha himself was best at fishing, but he knew that not all could get past the slimy texture.

@Aaliyah i'm so sorry for the wait hskfdjlskjo, do you want to exit to a new thread in Gemini?
