Ruby-Beta liked its quiet. It didn't hate it when it was loud, as it could get in Draco sometimes, but it preferred a more peaceful, quiet atmosphere so it could relax in peace. Yes, the quiet was nice, free of stress.
But not the kind of quiet it had to endure walking from Pegasus to Draco with an 8 foot tall demon stomping along behind it. It could practically feel the tension in his limbs, itching for some kind of action and it wondered if, the instant it saw the Sentinel and the Warden outside the doors he would just launch into battle. It...really hoped that he didn't do that.
Thankfully, he did not and they passed through the doors in peace, Beta extremely conscious of the Warden's curious gaze following them through the doorway. He heard Azrael snort behind it and it tensed for a second before relaxing when nothing came of it. Into Draco they went and immediately Beta held up its tail and turned back. "Wait here a moment?"
It didn't stop to see if Azrael waited or not, but bounded forward, calling out, "Uh, Master Vargas? Are you there? I need to talk to you."
RE: pick on the new guy - Azrael - Mar 02 2022
Behind Beta came the muscled, dark figure of Azrael, glowing eyes raking every inch of the caverns they traveled through, grunting with surprise when they passed into the voidlight but not reacting further, growing more and more tense as they went along into the strange, alien cave that was the womb. He eyed the two sentries carefully, noticing the smaller one staring at him with an expressionless face but Azrael could feel the curiosity burning into him. He snorted softly and stepped past. He wasn't interested in fighting children, nor would he be talking to anyone until he got his fight. Through the Aperture into a cave of strange light and darkness.
He stared, for a moment, at the Black Spire, wondering how something of such putrid darkness could create this strange light. He held his judgment for the moment, torn between feeling at home in the darkness, and an intense dislike for how foul this darkness seemed to be. It was not quite shadow but not quite light either, screwing with his eyes and making colors seem different.
He growled low when Ruby-Beta bid him to halt. Probably to go off and alert someone to his presence. Well, he was not one to wait on the doorstep for an invitation, stalking after Beta as it bounded further into the cave, looming over it as it called for a "Master" of some kind. So he was right, this one was only a grunt.
He held himself up, crossing both arms across his chest and waited for this "Master" to appear.

- THE LEVIATHAN -
The faint knowledge of approaching Gembound wasn't lost on him; the faint stones, their glimmer of magic, tugged distantly at his awareness. Still a strange sensation. One he was getting used to. Astraea and his ilk could, perhaps, instantly identify someone at a distance but for Vargas, it was like catching a faint scent on the wind. Ruby-Beta he recognized, before the call even came--how could he not?--but Azrael he couldn't pinpoint, not until Vargas came striding into view.
Ahh. His eyes travelled over the winged beast. He'd seen it once, in passing, fighting in--Polaris, had it been?--but he wasn't overly familiar with it. He looked to Ruby-Beta as he came to a halt before the pair.
"I am here," he rumbled in answer; and then, patient, "I have time. Speak."
As he said it, he wondered what they were doing here. What Ruby-Beta had to tell him, or to ask. Was there news-? Was he needed, somewhere? Or did it have something to do with Azrael? Vargas glanced to him again, noting with approval the wings, the four muscled limbs, the sheer size of the creature. There was an aesthetic appreciation, too, for the gemstone and the effects of almost light that seemed to continue outward from it, radiating across the creature's furred chest. Some distant corner of his mind noted that longer claws or hooves would improve the hind legs for kicking combat; that the thick tail should get some sort of weapon at its end, like a spike or a club. Or a clubbed spike, he reasoned, amused. But overall it was an interesting design, and he wondered whose, exactly, it had been.
Then his attention was trailing back to Ruby-Beta, waiting.

It was only when Vargas actually showed up, towering high over the both of them, that Ruby-Beta realized that it had no idea what it was going to say to him. Should it just have Azrael take the front stage? No, that would be rude and unbefitting. Should it just point at Azrael and go "He wants to fight"? No, also a bad idea. What, like Vargas was going to oblige whatever shmuck walked in and asked for a brawl?? But it couldn't say what it wanted to in front of Azrael or all deals would be off the table. It had to be careful about this.
It took the time as Vargas walked over to them to think up its plan and then cleared its throat and straightened up at the question. With a large, dexterous paw, it gestured to the demon behind him. "This is Azrael. He's a formidable hunter and magic user. He's looking for a fight from a member of the Forge." And once it'd finished the loose introduction, it grasped a thread of magic and broadcasted to the air just besides Vargas's head, so that only he would be able to hear. In its nervousness to get the spell right, it came through a little garbled and quiet, but audible nontheless. "I thought that he might make a valuable asset to the Forge, if led in the right direction. He's proud, so I didn't want to say something to turn him away on accident."
It glanced back to make sure Azrael hadn't heard it, but the demon was busy staring up at Vargas with a carefully guarded expression. It breathed a sigh of relief. It didn't know what did or didn't set the demon off, so it would rather Vargas handle this, if he would handle this at all.
RE: pick on the new guy - Azrael - Mar 05 2022
The shadow that was moving their way...it was utterly massive deep purple and acid green that struck something familiar in the back of his mind. He had seen this creature before...but where? Eyes narrowed for a moment and then it remembered the distant sound of shouting, of cold wind, of spores and the memory came to him. He'd seen this one fighting in Polaris, against the infection of Mother. Many had called him Master there as well and Astraea had cleansed him first. If he was a force against the scourge that was Mother and her wretched hive, then Azrael knew he would come to respect him.
Whatever he was doing here, what he had built in this cave, Azrael now found himself eager to learn. But they hadn't yet revealed any intentions or motives. So he stayed quiet, for now, watching the short exchange with a neutral, passive expression.
At Beta's introduction, he puffed up a bit, letting his magic burn inside of him, but it didn't get quite hot enough to glow through his skin. No matter. Not satisfied with Beta's introduction, he growled and stepped forward. "There are things I want to know as well! But first, I am owed a fight and this one," he glanced at Beta with a scowl, "is too COWARDLY to face my flames and my darkness! I am looking for an opponent worthy of ME."

my very apologies for the delays on my posts, this whole war thing's kinda made me lose track of time :S
- THE LEVIATHAN -
Vargas listened, patient, to Ruby-Beta. An asset. He shifted his gaze again to Azrael, studying him with a fresh eye. He had already given the beast a once-over--an assessment of his strength, his build--but he did so again. He tried to imagine the various uses he might be: a guardian, a brawler, or even one to generate further, powerful spawn for the Forge. Of course, there was the possibility that there were hidden depths--intelligence, cunning, tactical instinct--but for that, he'd have to wait and see.
He gave Ruby-Beta a nod, one of approval, and then Azrael was speaking. He puffed up, demanded a fight, and Vargas gave a huff of amused laughter in response. "'Owed' a fight? Ruby-Beta promised you a fight? To what end?" he asked, curious. Why did it want a brawl--was there a reason for it, some perceived insult? Or was the winged creature simply itching for battle? His gaze trailed over Azrael again. "Do you know who made you?" he asked, but it was again with curiosity, not some sort of promise of hidden knowledge. This didn't look like any design he could remember, and he'd seen his fair share.
"You ask for both information and a fight! That is two requests; tell me, what do we gain for indulging you?" Again, it was with curiosity that he asked. There was no insult in it; if anything he greeted Azrael as an equal, or something near to--perhaps as a teacher might greet a student.
He wanted to know if Azrael truly intended to consider joining the Forge. And moreso--he wanted to see how it would respond.

RE: pick on the new guy - Azrael - May 03 2022
Azrael frowned and snorted, glancing again at Ruby-Beta, who had taken a seat behind him and was watching carefully the proceeding, not interrupting the conversation between him and the other beast. That was fine - the creature was a coward and not needed here. Now he was talking to someone worthwhile.
He puffed out again. "To what end? I challenged it, it accepted, and then backed out! I will not accept that!! A fight is a FIGHT!!" He clenched his fists, claws digging into the heels beneath the currently closed eyes, feeling heat boiling in its veins. The fight that had started had given it a taste of fire again, but it wasn't satisfied, not yet, not until the fight was done. "It said it knew a worthy opponent for me, so here I am!"
The question caught Azrael off-guard. Who had created him? He thought back, trying to remember if there was anyone at his hatching, if he remembered ever seeing anyone like him. But, beside the simple raven that he had eaten, there had been nobody. "Nobody CREATED me. I hatched in SHADOWS. I was made from DARKNESS." At as his words, his magic surged up and the dim lights above them began to flicker at his power, going out for just a moment before turning back on as they had been before - a small show of strength and intimidation.
Perhaps if someone that Azrael considered lesser had spoken to him like that, he would have been deeply insulted at the notion of being "indulged". But this beast was important and powerful and worthy, so for now, Azrael kept himself in check. "You gain a fight! And an ally! I have been dormant and bored for far too long. If I get a good fight that lets my blood run hot as fire, and our goals align, then my support is yours."

Vargas laughed heartily at Azrael's declaration that Ruby-Beta had "backed out" of a fight.
Ahhh, he liked this one! It had fire, yes; it had pride, a sort of pride that was far too difficult to find these days. It held a healthy amount of aggression, but it seemed to be perfectly in control. Its magic, too--Vargas could not tell at a glance if the flicker of lights had been manipulation of the darkness (a fairly common ability, magically-speaking) or alteration of the light-orbs themselves. If the latter, he'd known very, very few capable of that, and it spoke of well-trained power.
He did note, however, that it was strange that Azrael had simply spawned from stone, like so many of this generation. He had mentioned lying dormant; how long had that been? A year, or a thousand-? He didn't strike Vargas as one of the common creatures spilling forth from the walls these days. Someone's creation, left behind? Or a blueprint finally taking hold on an available piece of stone? He mulled it over, but there would be no easy answer. Whoever had made Azrael--if anyone indeed had--had left his design behind, now.
"Good!" he boomed, when the demon-beast had finished speaking. "A good ally is difficult to find! Show me, then; show me your worth!"
With that, Vargas turned, sleekly slipping into a pacing stride to circle Azrael--a clear invitation to battle.
down for an actual battle if you are!

RE: pick on the new guy - Azrael - May 06 2022
Azrael grinned, all sharp teeth and bestial fire, the glowing cracks in his chest burning brighter for just a moment. At last! An opponent worthy of HIM! He didn't even notice Ruby-Beta anymore, who had begun to back up more to give them space, and instead took a moment to watch as Vargas began to circle him. Crouched, ready to strike. So he was a physical fighter. Azrael was strong, of course, but his power lay in magic. When strength and magic clashed, it was always messy, confusing, hard to predict. He liked it that way - it always made the fight so much more interesting!
"GOOD! You will witness my FLAMES and DARKNESS!" Wings spread open wide as he sucked in a deep breath, all the small lights on his body growing brighter for a moment as flame licked up his esophagus and then, with a tremendous roar, leaned forward and expelled a torrent of flame directly towards Vargas. He'd intended on it being a steady stream, but after a moment or two, it sputtered out and he coughed out a last few licks far earlier then he would have liked. Azrael growled and frowned for a moment - curse Emuh! Ever since his damned test, his magic had been so weak!

'FLAMES and DARKNESS' was a hint, giving Vargas only a split second of "uhoh"-tier realization before the actual flames. The inhale, the spread of wings, sent a tense spring-coil through the Leviathan's muscles, and when Azrael exhaled, he leapt up and to the side, in the direction he'd been circling. Past the crackle and roar of the flames, the demon might have heard Vargas's claws scrabbling at rock as the master hauled himself out of the way. Vargas was--luckily for him--quick; but even so, he had to sprint faster and faster, taking two great leaps midway, to avoid the torrent of fire that followed.
There was a faint smell of burning as the flames caught the end of his tail here and there, but for the most part, he'd managed to avoid the blast. As the flames came to a stop he skidded to a halt, too, tensing and turning to fully face Azrael--tensed as if to pounce.
There were no more words, just his leering grin and intense stare, but for the moment, the demon would have a moment yet to strike. And though Vargas may not have spoke, he was taking mental notes: Powerful. Confident. Controlled.
These were good qualities. And, once he had time to be, he'd certainly be pleased.
