Born to the Throne - Bassa - May 05 2015

@Juniper

Deep down in the caves, in the ruined city of forgotten time, amidst the glowing, twinkling crystals, there lay a smooth round egg made of onyx. The egg was really quite large -- large enough, in fact, to hold the body of a house-cat. Veins of orange webbed across its shiny surface like lightning. Sitting majestically above the egg was a throne. It was a decaying, old thing by this time in its existence, and no one alive knew who had once occupied it. Was it fate that had placed this egg so close to a symbol of power? Perhaps. Or, perhaps this was not a symbol, but a coincidence, and nothing more.

The egg moved a tiny bit, but even that small movement caused what seemed to be a booming echo to bounce throughout the ruins of the city in this part of the cave system. There was just enough time for the echo to die down, before it moved again, this time shattering the egg's outer surface, breaking along the spidery orange tendrils. The sound shattered the quiet once again, and was followed almost immediately by the loudest sound of all, the sound of stone cracking and crumbling. Except it was at a much higher pitch because of the egg's relatively small size compared to things like boulders, so it sounded almost like the shattering of glass or the ripping of paper.

And suddenly, onyx shrapnel exploded in all directions, the pieces slamming into the throne and the walls surrounding it. And out came the cat. And thus Ji'bassa was born, with no knowledge of anything around him, and every hope of finding out everything he possibly could about the world. His bright orange eyes took in everything around him and his sleek black fur shone in what small amount of light glowed through the humongous room. He was ready. Ready for this life, and all of its adventures.

The world was green, warm and never changing for as long as she could remember - but then something did change. The cocoon that sheltered her was no longer large enough and her body pressed against it until it began to crack. Darkness, different than the soft green light that she had always known, came in through those cracks. Juniper reached out a paw to try and touch this irregularity in her so-far constant existence. At her prodding a part of the egg was severed from the rest and fell away, revealing more darkness but also some light. She quickly pulled her paw away from the hole, surprised.

The young cat did not move from her place inside the cocoon as she took in everything about the new space surrounding her. There were new colors of light that came from the crystals protruding from ground like a maze around her. Everywhere there was the soft white light coming from the gems, different than the green of the gen she had grown from.

A loud pop from directly behind her sprung the kitten from her shell in fear. She whirled around, all her fur standing on end, to locate the source of the noise. Yet the only thing there was a wall, blocking her view of whatever lay behind. Confused, Juniper cried out. Mew?

Ji’bassa’s eyes flicked here and there, and his tail matched the bright orange globes, twitching restlessly. He held quite still as he looked, as cats were prone to do, lest he alert anyone else to his presence. Of course, he was still a kitten in his mind, having just been born, so he couldn’t hold still for too long. He grew bored after only a minute or so, and was about leap up and go play somewhere – like maybe on top of that big stone thing in front of him (the throne) – but then he heard a Mew from somewhere nearby.

His natural and acute curiosity made his pupils dilate even more than they already were, attempting to locate whoever or whatever had made that sound. It was a sound he recognized instinctively, as the creature who had made it was a cat also, but Ji’bassa didn’t know that. He wanted to simply bound forward into the darkness and maybe stumble across the creature, maybe make a new friend, but cats were also known for their suspicion and want to hide in the face of a threat if they could. He lowered himself to the floor, swallowing nervously, and, without really knowing what he was doing or how he was doing it, he accessed his Magic, with the intention of feeling out for whoever was in the room with him…

POST-ATTEMPT EDIT:
Suddenly, he felt overwhelmed with the sensation of another heartbeat nearby. The extra beating (his own, as well as the other's) was disorienting and he quickly cut the cord on his flow of Magic, feeling dizzy. He let out an annoyed and drowsy, Mrowr, and fell over onto his side, glad that it was only his own heartbeat he could feel now. The feeling of pumping blood and pounding pulse was a bit much for him. For the moment he temporarily forgot that there was another being in the room with him, instead focusing solely on catching his breath.

In the moments after her call Juniper kept still, waiting to see what would happen. Nothing, at first, but after a few moments there was an answering sound. It was different than the one she had made but also similar. It meant something else, she knew, but she wasn't sure exactly what. Whatever it was, it didn't sound scary at least and the calico kitten decided to see what it was.

First, she needed to get around the wall. It seemed like the edge of the world but it couldn't be, since both sounds had come from the other side of it. Looking up proved her deduction as the wall ceased to be before reaching the twinkling lights above. And so she set out, walking beside the barrier as best she could while dodging the crystals. It didn't take long for her to reach the end of the wall and she paused to assess the situation beyond.

There was something new, larger than her but smaller than the wall, and she watched it until she was sure it wasn't going to move. Once certain she crept out from behind the wall only to stop again upon seeing the black fluffball laid out on the floor in front of the new object.

Ji’bassa was lazily licking his paws and chest, now mostly calm but still a bit too on edge to go looking for the other creature in the room, when suddenly his ears twitched. He heard the soft pad of paws on the ground across from him, and glanced in the direction of the doorway (whatever a doorway was because cats don’t know what doorways are). In the dim light there stood another cat, who now was close to the throne – the big stone thing that looked like a fun place to play on top of. The big black male was not afraid of the little calico she-cat. Instinctively, he knew she was like him, though the information didn’t go to his conscious brain right away.

”Who are you?” he meowed, still lying lazily on his side, head lifted up off the floor just enough to take in the other cat. His orange eyes took in her smaller frame and lighter fur. After a second, he went back to licking a paw. He was naturally adventurous, yes, but he was also a cat and cats were sometimes lazy. Having just been born, and unaware of all outside of his immediate vicinity, he wasn’t quite up to adventuring just yet.

The other gembound turned to look at her and Juniper was immediately mesmerized by his bright, orange eyes. They were different than the other, softer, colors that she had seen so far and she stared into them until the other cat spoke. For a moment she continued to stare at him, her soft green eyes furrowing in confusion, but then she seemed to understand. "Juniper." It was her name but she did not know why she knew that or why that was what she was called. It sounded nice, though, and she immediately liked it.

You? She asked, curious to know what he was called.

RE: Born to the Throne - Bassa - May 06 2015

The black cat’s tufted ears flicked when he heard her name. Juniper. He supposed it fit her. It was a cute name and she was rather small and adorable. His tongue dragged slowly across his side as he continued to bathe himself. Then she asked him what he was called and he had to speak through a mouthful of fur. “Ji’bassa,” he said, before immediately resuming his bath. Then he stopped again, natural curiosity kicking in.

He rolled onto his stomach and then rose to his paws, sitting up. His neck stretched out as he sniffed the air in her direction, picking up whatever scent he could. He let out a soft, Rowr, inviting her to come closer so they could touch noses to fur and brush against one another, as cats do.

RE: Born to the Throne - Juniiper - May 06 2015

Ji'Bassa. It was similar to her name but also different, just like a lot of things about him. He was larger than her and something, though she couldn't decide exactly what, was inherently different. Ji'Bassa. She repeated, getting a feel for the name. When he stood and called her closer she did not hesitate. Nose touched nose and Juniper decided she liked this other gembound as she took in his scent. Everything was unfamiliar and strange and she didn't know what to make of it but at least she wasn't alone.

She stepped away from him after they had both taken the time to thoroughly smell each other and sat. Her soft green eyes roamed the area, taking in everything with a careful sweep. Where? She asked without looking at him. Maybe he knew something she didn't about this place.

RE: Born to the Throne - Bassa - May 06 2015

They spent a minute or two doing nothing but smelling and sniffing and getting used to one another. Ji’bassa knew he was bigger than she was, but he wasn’t really the type to use that against her. Right now all he wanted was some company, and now that he was fully awake and seemingly done bathing, he wanted to go off and explore. It seemed Juniper had the same idea, as she looked around and asked, ”Where?

He didn’t know quite what she meant, but he got the general gist of what she was asking, and looked around himself as well. His eyes instantly fell on the throne which he had been born below. He looked up at its towering frame and was immediately determined to climb all over it and make it his. He marched forward, made his body hunch low to the ground, wiggled his butt in the air, and jumped…

POST-ATTEMPT EDIT:
He made it, but barely, one of his back paws catching on part of the giant seat. His body slammed into the throne, suddenly coming to a full stop. He made no noise (most cats don't when they fall like that), but quickly righted himself, licking his chest in embarrassment. His tail twitched in annoyance as his heart rate slowed back to normal, and then he turned and looked down at Juniper. "Come!" he meowed. "Play!"

RE: Born to the Throne - Juniiper - May 06 2015

He didn't answer her, not in words anyway, and she didn't look back at him until he moved. Juniper stayed where she was and carefully observed as he tried, and almost failed, to jump up onto the throne. He made it though and then called down to her to join him. One ear flicked and then she rose to her feet. She started closer to the throne than he had, she was smaller and not as confident she could make the jump. For a few moments she just stared up at where she wanted to go, judging the distance, and then finally leaped.

Post-attempt edit: With ease she landed atop the throne, graceful and slick. Her ginger tail rose high behind her in pride, and little bit of boasting. Juniper didn't even glance at 'Bassa before she jumped up on one of the arms of the throne and sat pretty, grooming a paw aloofly.
