Born of Fire - Aleera - Aug 06 2015

The Eridanus was as silent as the grave. An eerie silence with naught but the echo of running water to disrupt it. Heavy, oppressive like the moisture in the air the plant life dripped with a constant yet, delectable dew. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary. Nothing violent, nothing dangerous. Merely nature, existing. Far to the edge of the Maw of Mosses lingered three great stalactites that hung from the ceiling like great pointed knives. Waiting dangers is what they were in truth. At any moment, with cause or not, they could lose their connection with the cave ceiling and come crashing to the earth to do devastating damage. Even so, vines had found their way to these particular rock formations and hug so low they almost touched the waiting mushrooms below. The fugi themselves were huge, like pillowed beds with a funky smell.

It was definitely a picturesque place to stumble upon, but it wasn’t the formations in the rock or the lovely blossoming vines that was so eye catching. Between the three stalactites was an orb that appeared to have grow from the ceiling between the threes. A brilliant orange color it had, it almost glowed, yet was almost completely concealed from view by those same vines. Spikes of the orange rock, also known as fire opal hung down from the formation of the large crystal like structure. Once might have over looked this place, this orb, had it’s glowing not increased in the last few days. Many who passed seemed content to ignore it, while others had stayed to watch, knowing what was soon to become of it. Still, time had passed and what was to emerge from the chrysalis had yet to come forth. Those who had lingered and long moved on. It almost seemed that what was inside didn’t want to come out, didn’t want to experience the world…but it is often we do not have a choice in many matters.

The shell of the opal began to crack, spider webbing like in nature before the bottom of it fell out. Like the yolk might come from a cracked egg a type of orange goo came leaking out. Gradually, the weight and slickness of it forced the suffocating vines away and what remain came flooding out all at once. Amongst the orange liquid was a singular black spot that fell to the earth to land on the soft mushrooms below. Upon her side she lay there for a long time, dazed and confused. A young wolf pup had emerged with eyes as brilliant as the fire opal upon her forehead, coated in an elegant obsidian color. At least, most of her was. Pieces of her shell came floating down with the remainder of the goop that matted her fur, dotting the nearby foliage as finally instinct, or thought, something made her begin to sit up. As she did so, one could see where her fur had not grown in, the part of her face marred with grotesque features. For every one born pretty, there’s another who isn’t.

RE: Born of Fire - Blackfeather - Aug 06 2015

Near the Monarch sat the young feline, as always her head was bowed but this time she approached it with her nose just barely brushing it. She felt more connected, more in tune with her powers when she could make contact with the All Mother. Behind her closed eyes were pinpoints of light, some strong and some weaker than others but none threatening to peeter out. It was good, it satisfied her that the plants were all well and good. She focused on these things, not daring to think on anything else or believe that she was any more than an extension of the lights around her. She was the All Mother's child and so she would be one with the life around her, she would understand it.

Plop.

A drop of water landed on her nose, forcing her out of her reverie. Green, pupiless eyes opened and focused on her nose. Why had she been knocked out of the trance? She looked up at the All Mother, eyes questioning. "All Mother, have I meditated for too long? Is there something else you would wish to show me?" Her eyes focused back to the drop of water on her nose. Was this a sign? She lifted her muzzle towards the lights above and turned her head this way and that, studying the drop of water. The way it caught the light... It resembled something bright, beautiful. A spark, perhaps a spark of flame? Was that it? "I don't understand, Mother. Why did you send me this sign of fire? Will a fire threaten your garden?"

Crack!

It was a sound nearby, one of a hatching gembound. "Oh! Another of your children! I will go greet them!" With a dip of her head towards the giant mushroom she then trotted away towards the sound. What she finally beheld was a great read cocoon. Like fire... How amazing. The creature that had just come from the egg was larger than she and was strangely disfigured. Ugly. However, she couldn't ignore the signs... Her Mother had sent her the fire message and this one was sitting on top of a mushroom. One of Mother's special children! Perhaps those disfigurments were a show of favor... of one that was special among the furred ones! The three kittens of the feather were Prophets but perhaps this would be a burning flame that would protect the garden!

A sharp intake of air was what signaled the kitten's revelation and quickly she bowed her head and lowered her front to the ground. "You are the Great Fire! The All Mother sent me a sign of fire and you have been born on a mushroom... You are a Guardian of the Garden!" Her eyes were closed as she bowed before the marked wolf. "You have been Marked by the All Mother as a chosen child." It all made perfect sense! If there were to be Prophets to decipher signs then there had to be someone to guard the Prophets and her children.

weeping shades of indigo
shed without reason
i had been practicing, honing my skills to the best of my abilities. and while in my young adolescence, i was still far from anything more then a fledgling. but i could feel it today, i was ready to expand and hunt, expand and cast. a small grin plastered against obsidian jowls as small paws extended forth to advance my lithe figure in a full-on sprint. however, i was still a rather slow little lion, for my limbs were too gangly and my paws too large to properly maintain superb balance at all times. instead, i had my bouts of doubt when i'd stumble, but nothing could slow me down to the point of walking. i acted as though i were a large man already, with a mane flowing downward - when in reality my neck was as bare as my bottom - zooming through the vegetation with ease. hopping over obstacles, landing with full speed. i was so excited, making little noises of exerted carbon to make the moments of wonderful agility more dramatic. perhaps if i used my second spell, i'd be able to go even fast? i focused in on my gemstone located in my chest cavity, though this time keeping my eyes nice and wide so that i wouldn't kill myself running through eridanus like this. i summoned my magic, hoping for an answer. alas! just a bit of gust, nothing too large but the breeze swooped me up just a bit - accelerating me even more so. this spell was short lived, but it pushed me through the brush line as i skidded to a halt to observe a newborn gembound and a...much smaller version of me standing there gawking and spewing some such at the gembound. my head cocked in confusion, and i approached with caution. veering around to the right side, to peer up at the newborn who needed much assistance in this very vital time. dull jaded lenses observed the smaller cat, who spoke of things i knew not, and i shook my head slowly.

"it's but a newborn. even i have no idea what you're saying."

i chuckled the words in good fun, but as soon as the chortle escaped it dissipated as i peered at the gembound once again. i meant no harm, no rudeness nor snide. merely to help this new little thing on it's way, for it would need information, lessons! who would they imprint upon? i haven't seen any of them like this one before..only cats and birds for the most part. and nasty, nasty beasts of which still haunt my dreams. childish tones ceased after my initial, so as to allow either more babble or for the pup to give it's name.

RE: Born of Fire - Aleera - Aug 09 2015

The world was muffled and blurred and even as she found equilibrium, none of it made sense. Little paws with needle shard claws scrapped at the mushroom beneath her tiny form. Twisting this way and that, she tore at the roof of the fugi in an almost vain attempt to right herself, soft little whimpers escaping her all the while. She was as helpless as she appeared, with part of her body riddled in ugly pinkish black blotches where the rest of her fur had refused to grow in. What took it’s place instead were scale like anomalies, softened due to her new birth but no less uncomfortable to gaze upon. The new born gembound blinked back the garish light and colors, uneasy head bobbing this way and that. It took several attempts of clearing her eyes with her paws, scraping herself with pointed claws once or twice until the sounds started to come into focus, her sight clearing up to allow her to behold the world in which she had just been thrown into. There were, things, all around her but she had no name to give them, no understanding of where she was nor what she was. Everything was a blank space, yet that space was quickly filled with a growing sensation upon her right side.

Still unsteady, head twisted as best it could to peer upon her right side out of sheer instinct. Even in her still questionable sight she could see the exposed, broken skin, where her black fur lined the splotches. The thought of what it was ran through her mind, but jaws could not put this thought to words before a new sound had the newborn twisting her head back round before her. A small…creature of some kind had come to her suddenly, peering out from the vast cavern with brilliant green eyes. Aleera wobbled slightly, trying her best to stand though failed rather quickly to land upon her stomach once more when a searing pain ran along her side. More whimpers escaped the young gembound, looking back to other creature who had taken to bowing before her and speaking words to which little Aleera had no understanding. The creature called her ‘the great fire’, and seemed adamant on whatever it was it was trying to communicate. Once silence over took the other, the ebony wolf pup opened it’s jaws lined with sharp teeth and attempted to mimic the same sounds the other had made. This was short lived however, as another creature, not totally unlike the other came through the foliage.

This one too had green eyes, but a different coloring completely than the other. It spoke to the one who had come first, but didn’t seem as excited. At this point, Aleera attempted again to pull herself to her paws, ebony tail flailing this way and that to keep balance. She was still very unsteady in her stance, but the pain in her side seemed to ease a little though there were still bouts of horrid stings with certain movements. Lifting her head, the gem upon her forehead caught the light for just a moment as the last of her chrysalis fluid fell away from her form. ”Ho…Haaaa.” Little jaws moved, attempting to form words for the first time as demonstrated by those present. ”Fee, fir, fire!” She yelped suddenly, barking at the two with wide eyes though only one could make them out clearly.

RE: Born of Fire - Blackfeather - Aug 10 2015

From her crouched position she didn't hear nor see the approach of the other until he spoke. It startled her and made her turn her head to his approach. No idea what she was saying? Why, he must be a non-believer, not used to the ways of the All Mother. As for the babe, well... she could understand how she'd be confused by the words. She needed to simplify what she was saying for the both of them.

After her initial startled moment the kitten put on a smile, her usual infinitely calm one as she gazed at the lion cub with self-assured eyes. "The All Mother," The cat gestured with a paw to the large white shroom towering in the distance, visible even here. "She is the one who watches over us all, she gives life to us, the plants, the mushrooms, she made all. We are all Her children. That wolf," Now she turned her head towards the stirring and confused pup with a look of devotion. "Was birthed on top of a mushroom which must mean it was a sign from Mother. Mother has cast favor on this wolf and wants her to be a Guardian of Her Garden." Now her eyes turned back to the cub as if this all made perfect sense. "I also received a sign of fire from the mother right before She lead me here. Do you understand now?" Her voice was ever patient, ever kind.

At the pup's exclamation the feline dipped her head and turned back to the black pup. "Yes, Marked One! You are fire!" As an aside to the cub she also added, "Her coat is marred with the scaly markings of mushrooms, another sign of Mother's favor."

the kitten next to me spoke in riddles and rather unrecognizable words. i could only peer down at her in sheer shock as she spoke as if she knew what she was talking about. i was more than perplexed with her untimely discussion about something called 'the all mother'. to a newborn, nonetheless! a newborn who can barely stand, and this little kitten wants to mew on and on about something no one's even heard of. but, true to my nature, i did not disagree with her outright. i did not speak my own opinion. i would simply allow the smokey gal to believe in what she wanted, and as soon as the pup spewed the word fire, it sparked the kitten's beliefs all the more. a deep breath swelled within my diaphragm, inflating the lungs as i held it for a moment or two. lids widened over jaded lenses as my eyes rotated to the other direction, away from the kitten and her babbling. simultaneously, my brows rose in unison above my eyes. i could almost feel the whooshing which swept over the kitten's head - figuratively of course - as i decided to dismiss this nonsense and focus on the matter at hand. the real matter at hand, the pup.

"do you need some help there, pup?"

but without much more hesitation, i scoped out the area in order to attempt and climb the fungus to help the little gembound down. surely she could not jump, she would hurt herself. i grimaced, unsure if the path i would take would help me atop the mushroom. i could try! let's see..and alas, i tumbled down to the mire below. i shook my body, looking from the kitten to the pup and called back to her.

"i will try again if you cannot climb down alone."

i said to reassure not only the pup, but myself as well.

The shaking in her legs began to ease, strength filling her muscles. Still the young gembound peered out to the two who had come to her birthing, though even now she didn’t know that. All that Aleera knew it the moment is that she was and that these similar looking creatures made odd noises that seemed to communicate feeling and thought. With effort the pup attempted her first step toward the edge of the large mushroom, luckily enough having grown from her chrysalis, needle sharp claws leaving little gashes where she stepped. All the while Aleera got comfortable with movement, the gray creature with eyes of emerald was speaking, not particularly to Aleera but to the other, larger creature present. To focused on herself, she heard naught what the cat had to say, for the difference in one paw over the other was far to interesting at the moment to try and give her attention to something else. The stinging of her movement began to ease, cool air washing along her side and sending a chill up her spine as the two continued to speak among themselves. It was only when the gray cat said the world ‘fire’ once more did Aleera’s ember eyes tear themselves from her paws back to the other two. ”Fire!” She yelped again, tail wagging with a sudden excitement. ”Fire, fire!”

These barks of this singular word ended when the larger of the two felines, turned his attention from the gray cat and asked her a specific question, to which she had no answer to give. ”Fire?” She asked, looking down to him with her little head cocking to one side. Then this cat began to try and climb his way up the mushroom and meet Aleera at the top, but he only fell back down which made her bark another incoherent word. When he looked back up to her and spoke, she could almost sense what he was trying to tell her. ’to get down’. Orange eyes blinked several times as her little body shuffled this way and that along the edge of the mushroom, hesitation clear even upon her disfigured face. Minutes passed before Aleera found the courage needed to conquer the first of her trials in this life, and leapt from the mushroom top, aiming for the larger of the two cats, Niru. The black pup flopped through air with as much grace as a fish out of water, falling upon the poor cubs head with a ‘thud’ and rolling off to the side. Ebony paws met the mire for the first time, but with more ease than before she lifted herself up and shook her coat free of debris. ”Down!” She barked the newest word she acquired with a grin and a wag of the tail.

RE: Born of Fire - Blackfeather - Aug 13 2015

The other feline didn't say whether he was further confused by her words, nor did he confirm that he understood them. Blackfeather preferred to take this as a good sign and assume that he understood her. Good. All should understand Mother's way and know that she was a kind soul that wanted only to help her children.

The young cub then moved forward to try and get the newborn down. Blackfeather tilted her head to the side, a bit of doubt clouding her gaze. "Perhaps you should not do that? Mother might want her Fire to find her own way down. To prove her strength." Mother was strange like this at times. Like when Owlfeather had trouble hatching. Mother wanted one of her Seers to figure out how to come out on her own and in that same time teach Black about the Blackness or the Void from which all things had come from and would return to.

The lion did not heed her warning and attempted to climb. Only to end up falling to the ground. Blackfeather did not seem surprised, nor did she move to help. The kitten simply dipped her head to him and said apologetically, "See? Mother wants things done Her way. I hope you are not hurt though, Brother." That would be terrible! If he was hurt she was certain that she could find something to ease his pain.

It was then that the pup found her way down just as Mother intended. The pup leaped down and used the little lion as a cushion. The kitten couldn't help but giggle as she made her way closer. Her head lowered as she bowed it briefly to the pup. "Welcome! I am glad Mother helped you to get a way down, helped you on behalf of our Brother here. Marked One, do you have a name by which we should call you?" She and her sisters were given signs for their names by the feathers but surely one so close and Marked would have a name built in. "Oh! I should probably introduce myself first... I am to be called Blackfeather." She then looked down to the lion cub. Surely, he knew proper manners.

RE: Born of Fire - Niru - Aug 16 2015

I was still not entirely sure what the grey kitten spoke about. She named herself blackfeather, but still babbled about nonsense of which I wasn't too keen on listening to much longer. But I hated being rude. The fire pup had crushed me, chin smashing to the mire and I oofed a loud noise of pain and anguish before chuckling childishly as I erected my stance once again. An accident was always forgivable. I remained silent as the insane grey kitten preached about the all mother, but as far as I was concerned, if cancer didnt say it was true, then it wasn't. And he hadn't said a thing to me about some all mother who wills everything her way. Dull lenses rolled away from blackfeather to the fire wolf and back again, before realizing perhaps jt would be polite to give my own name.

"my name is niru."

My head then shifted so to look upon the black, maimed wolf without hesitation. She was...hideous. But that shouldn't stop me from accepting her, helping her. She might need me, so I was careful not to stare. Wouldn't want her feeling self conscious, what a terrible feeling.

"what's your name, fire wolf?"

I asked her, small grin plastered to my lips, despite the growing, nagging irritation from blackfeather's irrelevant rant.

{short and shitty, love me anyway}

RE: Born of Fire - Aleera - Aug 17 2015

The little gray thing kept saying the same noise over and over. Eventually, this too got stuck in the newborn heads. ”Mother! Fire!” She barked, a type of feral happiness gripped her as a lack of knowledge seemed to keep her spirits up. So far she did not have the words to ask what was going on, who she was, and what it was she was supposed to be doing. Another notable sting suddenly hit the young wolf pup in the side, and she jumped ever so slightly with a yelp and laid back upon the cool ground. Her tail wagging ceased and she no longer barked out words she didn’t even understand the meaning to. What escaped her next was a simple whine born of pain. As the goo from her hatching began to dry so too did the skin deformed by a severe skin disorder. With each new movement in this stage the skin could easily be torn and already drops of blood seeped from the cracks between the scale like deposits upon her side. It was right about then the little gray feline began to talk to her again, saying that same word ‘mother’ once more, but this time green eyes bore down upon the pup expectantly. It forced her to keep citrine eyes upon the other, ears perking forward to listen carefully. The term ‘name’ came to her more easily than anything else. She didn’t know who she was or what to call herself, but that was what the cat so desired of her. The pup was silent for a long moment, contemplative before her marred jaws parted. ”Al…Aleera.” She responded finally after her reverie. If this was her true name or not she did not know, but it felt…right.

The gray feline then said a new word, one that little Aleera grasped almost immediately as the other’s name Blackfeather. Then the larger, brownish one spoke up as well and quickly gave his name to add to the others. After a moment Aleera attempted to stand again, teeth born in a childish growl as her skin cracked at her movement. It would take time, but eventually these fissures in her flesh would heal and she would be able to move more freely…For now, it was a torrent of pain. ”Hurt.” She muttered, turning in on herself to attempt to lick clean these opening wounds out of mere instinct. The light that came down from the lights hanging about the gave caught the gem exposed on the wolves head, glinting before she shook herself again and looked up to the other creatures. Thought became more coherent by this time, and words began to form, allowing the new gembound to speak more clearing for the first time. ”Where here?”
