Ivory - Archimedes - Feb 11 2023 He was making one last little detour, before his journey to the meeting. This one was one of both necessity, and curiosity. Necessity, because he needed a little water before he moved on--but in fairness, he himself required little. The serpent beneath him, its gilded obsidian scales sleek in the glowing crystal-light, was also thirsty--and this one, Archimedes could tell along the link, needed to drink deeply. Curiosity, because up ahead, he could see something moving beneath the water. It wasn't a natural movement--not a chaotic flicker, here-and-gone, like the reflection of a fish's scales. No, it was something repetitive, orderly, and identical, again and again and again. As he drew closer, he found that it was a structure beneath the water: something with turning parts, something... created, and not natural at all. At least, his instincts told him so. He and the Charger slid forward, both dipping down the steep slope to lap (or gulp) at the icy cold water, Archimedes' beady eyes on the Generator. At length, he clambered back aboard the Charger, who slid up the slope a little until they were parallel with the generator's parts. Archimedes hesitated; he hated to look foolish, but he was wondering if the Generator were sentient and... well, with the things he'd seen in this cave, who was to say? There was only one way to find out. The little rat sat upright, whiskers twitching, and called out toward the river. "I know you look very much like an inanimate object, but you are moving, and so I have to ask... are you alive?" He felt rather silly, but... At least there is no one here to see, if I am wrong. At least... he hoped there wasn't. @The Piano RE: Ivory - The Piano - Feb 13 2023
@Archimedes RE: Ivory - Archimedes - Feb 14 2023 Archimedes spun. He paused, whiskers twitching, to regard this new entity: another seemingly inanimate object, yet yes, this one spoke. "...So it would seem," he breathed in agreement, just barely audible. He was, after all, still coming to terms with the fact that there was a speaking whatever-this-was just over there. He urged the Golden Charger onward, and it slid forward in rasping coils, the rat perched attentively atop its head. His eyes flicked over the piano with, indeed, fascination, though the reserved sort--perfectly polite, however. "And you are clearly alive. This world never ceases to amaze," the rat mused. "I would ask what you are, but I don't think the answer would enlighten me all that much. So I will ask, instead, for your name; I am Archimedes." There was sardonic, somewhat self-deprecating humor in his tone; The Piano could have told him precisely what it was but the word 'piano' would indeed have told him nothing, as he'd never seen one in his life, and had nothing to compare it to. The Charger came to a slithering halt half a dozen or so yards off, Archimedes peering up--from here, despite keeping a very safe (or polite?) distance, all he could really see of The Piano was its underside. He tried to gauge for himself whether it might be dangerous, but... it was wood and metal and whatever else--or appeared to be--and he had no reference for its tone or movements. @The Piano RE: Ivory - The Piano - Feb 14 2023
@Archimedes RE: Ivory - Archimedes - Feb 14 2023 The rat pondered this, and then nodded. "Is a Piano what you are, then? It seems I've the answer to that despite myself," he said, with some amusement. Interest was drowning out his caution, though self-preservation still reigned. The mention of the Charger, however, was a brief distraction and Archimedes glanced down in a way that indicated he'd forgotten it was even there--had treated it, in fact, as a simple extension of himself. "Ahhh, the serpent," he answered for it; "No, it has no name. It is mine," he added, in an offhand sort of way, though he'd never had to define it before. "I suppose I ought to name it something." But this, too, was spoken almost absently, as his attention came back to The Piano. Perhaps he would do that later. It was clearly not all that important, right now. Archimedes studied The Piano again, for a moment, taking in what it had said. No face. How strange. "You'll pardon me for staring, then, I hope. You are so unlike any living thing that I have met that I find myself wondering how you... function." The serpent slid a little closer with that dry rustle of scales. "May I ask--or would you consider it rude?--how you function..? How do you move--if you do at all; what do you eat, or do you not?" He imagined, somehow, that it must just bend those legs into flexible smoothness and perform an awkward, three-legged trot across the landscape. That its mouth--it must be hidden on the underside, yes? And its eyes-... Did it have eyes? If The Piano wanted a fascinated subject, here he was: and not a bit of it was faked. @The Piano RE: Ivory - The Piano - Feb 17 2023
@Archimedes RE: Ivory - Archimedes - Feb 17 2023 The serpent shot backward at the snap of strings and slam of lid, very nearly unseating Archimedes. Like a rider on a panicked horse he clung, hissing and barking instructions at the snake--and it stilled after a moment, settling back into that unnatural reptilian stillness. Archimedes turned, blinking and taking a breath, to regard The Piano. "Quite alarming, and unexpected," he said, and though he was out of breath, it was a tone of praise. "Your shape and function are both admirable; it seems you are an ambush hunter, then-?" He nodded, then, to the Charger. "As for this--it is a tool of magic. A linking of your own mind to a Lesser Gembound's, and an imposition of will," though perhaps that was not a universal assessment. He rested a forepaw's palm on the snake's smooth head. "In any case--I admire your appearance and your intellect both. It is a shame I had not met you sooner," he continued; "as I was planning to gather several like-minded Gembounds to organize some cooperative efforts beneath my leadership. I suppose, however, that you operate perfectly well on your own--a perfect predator, as it were." He paused, washing his whiskers briefly, then peering up at The Piano--as if to ask if he were right. @The Piano RE: Ivory - The Piano - Feb 21 2023
The Piano fell silent, watching with mildly guilty confusion, as Archimedes's snake fell into a panic. It had not thought its little demonstration was so frightening--at least, it had thought that the rat would have had the snake under greater control. Perhaps there was no overcoming the limitations of a Lesser mind, no matter how intelligent the tamer. @Archimedes RE: Ivory - Archimedes - Feb 21 2023 ...Music, Archimedes mused, pausing. He studied the Piano again, understanding now what the garbled sound of its resonating speech was--a song. Not a coherent piece of music, but coherent as communication, and it was impressive of its own accord. He wondered if there might be more 'music' out there to listen to. "Of course," he agreed aloud, settling back and washing his whiskers as he thought. "I think you are sophisticated enough to understand should I explain both sides of this... scheme," and Archimedes seemed to settle on that word after some thought. He settled his paws again. "The ultimate goal is to make ourselves invaluable to the other denizens of the caves. To have them look to us, protect and fear us, to be so reliant upon us that they never dare turn on us. To be the ones they look to to solve their problems--for a cost. And to live well." Ahh, a monologue. "To that end--I intend to begin with substances the caves contain but which see little in the way of trade. Toxins, perhaps. Hallucinogens and medications made from plants. These will be traded for food, for gemstones, for goods, for tasks performed for us. From there--well. Should someone come to us with a specific request... For example, if someone owed them for a trade, or is harassing them, and they need order restored, I suspect we'll see that as a lucrative possibility." He didn't outright say it, but he seemed to imagine some form of Cepheus all their own: comfortable living, positions of power and respect or even fear. All driven by necessity. He didn't ask The Piano what it thought--that would be insulting; there was no need. This was merely conversation and he knew it would answer, or it would not. But-! His mind lingered back on 'music,' and he tilted his head, a little. "Now that I'm sure I've spoken your ears off... so to speak... May I ask more about this 'music' that you mentioned?" @The Piano RE: Ivory - The Piano - Feb 27 2023
The Piano settled into a relaxed, dreamlike state as it listened to Archimedes's monologue. It even envisioned creative imagery of what the life he described would be like. Hundreds of gleaming animal eyes turning on them with reverence and admiration, reliance and awe... as a creature born for the performing stage, such a life was everything The Piano had ever dreamed of. It did not seem to matter too much to it that conventional music-making was very little of what they'd actually be doing. No, as it had told the Collector before, The Piano was an accepting, tolerant Gembound when it came down to it. It was embracing of all forms of music and artistry. @Archimedes |
