microwave manufacturer - Faceless - Aug 11 2023

Faceless was normally a reticent beast, never really actively seeking out social interaction for the sake of it. All it did all day was hunt, nap, climb trees, and occasionally act like a cat with zero brain cells out of boredom and excess energy. However. HOWEVER. This idea had been slowly revolving in its head for.... at least a couple cycles now, slowly taking on more and more of an actual shape with details, and it simply couldn't stop thinking about it. Couldn't let this flash of brilliant inspiration go to waste. This idea was its new obsession, and now, like an overheated piece of food, it was about to EXPLODE in the microwave that was its brain.

Time to put a harebrained plan into action.

"Collector, collector," it muttered, scuttling on muscular hind legs and mantis-like forelimbs deeper into Monoceros. "Where is the Collector.... the Collector...."

Tap, tap, tap. Tap. Tap.

For whatever reason, the Collector had a cane, today: the sort that a wealthy villain with far too little fashion sense (or a hidden sword) might be expected to strut around with. It was tall, formed of grainy black wood, with a tiny horned humanoid skull atop it forged from gold.

He strode around a corner, picking his hooved way down a narrow path, and offered a casual salute toward Faceless. "I believe I heard my name, in the barest little murmur-? Was that you? It is so terribly good to see that you survived The Sleepless Chaos's power. Now." He stopped, quite close, and leaned his shoulder against a stone outcrop and his hands atop the cane, flipping one hoof to cross over the other. "What might a humble tradesman do for you..?"

Faceless tilted its head at the Collector, then cocked a mantis-forelimb in an imitation of his salute. "Yesss-- that was me-- ah. Haha, hahaha, uh, I'm glad too." It rubbed its forelimbs together nervously. It didn't quite like remembering its encounter with the Sleepless Chaos, or Nemean's Bestie, or whatever one called it, even if it had woken up healed and with access to an underground party scene.

Never one to dwell unnecessarily on anything it didn't like, Faceless eagerly jumped right into explaining its request. "Yeah! Right, so I had an idea, right? So I met this guy once, he like, spends a lot of time practicing magic and stuff. And then he gets better at magic, like, that's how it works. Also heard about someone who takes care of-- of plants or something. Like gives them water and attention and then they have fruits or whatever else people like plants for. And that got me thinking:

"So I'm not really motivated to practice magic or spend a bunch of time taking care of plants or anything. Like, fruits are great, but you eat them in one second and then they're gone, and a short while after you're hungry again. But I don't really do much with my day anyway, and that guy who keeps themselves busy with taking care of plants got me thinking. I think it'd be really cool to have something like a plant to spend time on: pay lots of attention to it, do lots of little busywork tasks for it like fetching it water or something, and it gives you rewards! Something interesting and unique and fun! That way, I can get a sense of accomplishment and have something to keep me busy in my life!"

It folded its forelimbs together. "Ah, I know it might be a weird request? .... But I heard you got lots of weird cool things, so I figured I'd give it a try!" Somehow, its lightless, soulless eye-holes seemed to gleam with eagerness.

Usually--normally--the Collector was ready with any number of smooth-talking sales pitches. He'd come up with something (anything) even vaguely related to his client's request; he'd offer all its wonderful pros, gloss over the cons and assure them of what a fantastic idea it would be to essentially sign over their (moral) souls for it.

But this-?

"A houseplant," was all his blank mind could come up with, after a long moment of silence.

It took him another moment to gather himself. A smile (audible in his words); an inhale. "Well, my Smiling Horrorbeast friend... You are not incorrect in your statement that this is, indeed, a strange request." Polite amusement ran through his words. "But--ahh; there are so many varied things in this lovely little world of ours where one might put in effort and then reap our rewards. A profession," and his hands spread, palms up, "or raising children, or even a contract working for me..."

Now, that was a thought. He did have his children, now, but after all would it not be interesting to sign a contract with a Gembound free-? To have them serve him for varied rewards? Vaguely, he wondered how such a thing might go.

He leaned back, lifted the cane and eyed it, and grimaced a little. Tacky. A shake of his hand, and it vanished, gone. Red pinprick eyes flicked back to Faceless.

"Tell me; when do you feel the greatest sense of accomplishment in your life..? Perhaps that will aid us in narrowing down possibilities, hmm?"

The snake-mouth on the Faceless creature's tail hissed with agitation at the Collector's initial suggestions. "No, no..." it fretted, scratching at the dusty rock floor with its forelimbs. "A profession's too serious. Plus I have to figure out what I want to do, and then motivate myself. Ah... I'm not looking for cool spells exactly, but like, just as an example, the people with really great magic cast spells themselves, and the reward for practicing magic is more magical spells, so the rewards just come from yourself. That's no fun. I like it when something else gives me the reward because that feels cooler. I don't know why. Just does. And professions--hey, do you know that Blacksmith guy people have been talking about, the one who lives in the volcano? I dunno, his life seems kinda hard. Making weapons all the time but not even getting to use them himself. What do professionals even get in return, anyway? Spend all your time making cool stuff and all the cool stuff ends up going to other people, sigh.

"Oh! And the coolness of the stuff isn't even a surprise. That's something I remembered just now! Surprises are nice because not knowing what you're gonna get makes it more exciting! You just know it's gonna be cool but you don't know how! And children... huh? What reward do I get out of raising children?"
It was a genuine question, and Faceless paused, looking at the Collector expectantly. As far as it knew, children were just loud and annoying for a while and then they grew up and then... what else? Did they drop shiny new collector's items or treasure somehow, and it didn't know?

As for accomplishment... "Uh... once there was this tree with really cool bark that had lots of ridges and grooves and was kind of squishy. It was very cool to look at. I tore off the bark piece by piece with my arms! It made a really satisfying sound and I love the texture. And then the tree looked all different but still really interesting afterward so that was fun. .... I discovered this one fruit that was really round and shiny once! It was really good to look at but I didn't like the taste, so I sat in a tree and threw it at some kooru for fun and I hit THREE kooru right in the face in a row! They started running around after the first one so it was even moving targets~"

It stopped to scrape its mind for more accomplishments. "And, um... once I took a really good nap and then had the best stretch of my life after? Yeah, I think that's it. So you see, I've had a pretty normal life. That's why I want to get something to spice it up!"

He stared, for a beat, nonplussed.

This was--well, it was a flood of information, certainly. And more information was better than less, but some of it required... filtering, and he stood for a moment struggling to pick the useful from the not-so-much.

The stretch after the nap, for example? Not useful.

But... surprises.

"I do so enjoy providing surprises," he crooned, and then tipped his head to one side.

Clawed fingertips tapped at his sleeves, and then he nodded to himself. "I think the Tome of Accomplishment might well be what you seek."

Those fingers slid into his robes, and a moment later slid back out with a thick, ancient, leatherbound tome within. He blew the dust off the book's cover (and there was copious dust), then creaked it carefully open. The yellowed and uneven parchment pages within were...

...blank.

"...Ahh," said the Collector, and began rapidly flipping backward through the pages.

About fifty pages back--still blank--and he added a "hmmm," for good measure.

And then--right near the start of the book--"Aha! Here we are." He knelt, pushing the book toward (and turning it to face) Faceless, settling it on the rock.

The page displayed showed a colorful, painted-looking image threaded through with gleaming gold leaf. It showed a highly stylized version of Faceless--and as the Collector flipped back a couple pages, Faceless might recognize the story being told. The last page held streaks of gold and magenta dust, and an owl in flight, Faceless in the foreground. The page before, a series of strange, metallic pods. And the page before that? An eerie, foggy forest with a broken carriage and the shapes of Gembounds drawing near.

"...Truly? I did not expect that, of all things, in your past, my strange friend. But! Moving on."

The page before this one depicted the shadowed edges of a vast coliseum; and inside, a bipedal creature with a spear fighting what might have been Faceless. "What might have been," because the shape was upside-down, tossed skyward on what looked like a pillar of black smoke streaked with green lightning. "Ah yes," said The Collector, tapping a claw to this page. "I remember that."

He snapped the book shut, and another, smaller plume of dust pooled around it. "In any case, the 'surprises' this book offers are snapshots of what you accomplish. There is no set goal. Whatever you might do, should the book deem it of import, will appear in glorious color within--a sampling, of course, for now. Should I give you the book it will record your deeds. Touching a picture within will allow you--or anyone else--to relive that scene in all its... possibly questionable glory." He gently shrugged. "I am also told that it grants additional power--so long as you keep hold of the book, that is--for each five stories the book chooses to chronicle. I do not know what powers; the rumors have claimed they may be new magic, or gifts of knowledge. Does this sort of thing interest you-?" he finished, head tilting back to one side, book tucked back beneath his arm.
