I'll Face Myself - Tourmaline - Apr 21 2025 The sound of stone cleaving and crashing still echoes in Tourmaline's ears. A stranger was hurt because of her carelessness. If it had been her, imprisoned in her chrysalis under that rubble, perhaps she'd wouldn't feel so guilty. But she didn't even know who that poor soul was. She could not call his name to apologize, when he'd reawaken. Or to thank him for saving her. RE: I'll Face Myself - Game Master Dark - Apr 22 2025 "ANOTHER ONE?!" came the horrific screech. It was somewhere between a tiger's roar and nails on a chalkboard; the massive black, Oily owl that thudded down a moment later was almost the same, but visually. The curled ram's horns were a mismatch to the glowing green eyes; the ragged feathers flared with fire that changed color every few moments.
Emuh looked Tourmaline up and down. Behind him, the cave--its round door slid permanently open--dimmed, going from dull, dusty stone into pitch darkness. Likewise, the aura shrouding the bird changed abruptly: from drifting embers and smoke to a sudden calcification, with dust coalescing on his feathers and hardening into glittering stone. "YOU WILL FAIL, BUT THEN EMUH WILL HAVE SOMETHING TO LAUGH AT! VERY WELL. YOU FACE YOUR TRIAL! COME!" He turned, wicked talons scratching at the rock as he took off back into the cave. Beyond, the cave abruptly changed as Emuh simply... vanished. The space was small, only a few dozen yards in any direction, with a low ceiling. It was dim and empty; the only things present were a narrow window (a thin sheet of diamond, by the looks of things) and three strange, multicolored stone plates attached to the wall beneath it. The stone plates were red, yellow, and blue. Each plate had a divot: a hole in a different shape. The red plate held a square-shaped hole; the yellow, a circle; the blue, a diamond. Beyond the window stood a pedestal, unreachable with the sheet of diamond before it. On that pedestal lay a simple button, like a stone pressure plate. Tourmaline's Trial has begun. @Tourmaline RE: I'll Face Myself - Tourmaline - Apr 22 2025 She's rigid as Emuh lurched out of the darkness, cackling and screeching all the while. He's suitably intimidating for his job, at least, but Tourmaline doesn't exactly have much chance to laugh or recompose her thoughts before the chamber opens, and she's urged to step inside. As she follows him, she responds, "Thank you for the vote of confidence, Emuh. I suppose I'll try to give you a show, fail or success." @Game Master Dark RE: I'll Face Myself - Game Master Dark - Apr 22 2025 Distantly, there was a cackle. It wasn't even gloating, exactly; it was almost disappointed, but it was certainly amused.
It was eclipsed, however, by the sound of grinding a moment later. A slow rumble, as earth itself contracted, and the ceiling lowered, just a little... and the floor rose up. A few inches had been cut from the space in the room. As it was, maybe it was a little tighter. It wasn't anything serious, at least. But if it continued..? It could crush anything within. Best not to find out. @Tourmaline RE: I'll Face Myself - Tourmaline - Apr 22 2025 She'd preoccupied with the lash of her magic, of crystals coating her paws and digging in painfully, so at first Tourmaline ignores the hissing laughter of her audience. But then the earth shifts, and she's knocked from her feet, she's aware of... tight situation she's currently in. Not good. @Game Master Dark RE: I'll Face Myself - Game Master Dark - Apr 22 2025 The ruby slotted itself in, forming perfectly in the small square gap.
A soft red glow engulfed the plate, and shards of the diamond "window" ahead began to crack, promising a way through. Tourmaline had quickly solved her puzzle, but whether her ability was up to the task remained to be seen. @Tourmaline RE: I'll Face Myself - Tourmaline - Apr 22 2025 Her fraying nerves eased a little as the gem fit in perfectly, but she did jump at little at the cracking of the window. Turning, she'd see it cracked but still there. @Game Master Dark RE: I'll Face Myself - Game Master Dark - Apr 22 2025 Any other consequences of spell failure aside, the sudden grinding thud of the walls was another, terrifying warning.
The ceiling jolted down several more inches. There was still space. It wasn't crushing--not yet. A cat Tourmaline's size would have little issue traversing this place. But... ...There was less than before. Much less. It was, to be sure, a claustrophobic's nightmare. And the threat of escalation was clear: if she continued to fail, it was very possible she'd run out of space... and, potentially, out of life. @Tourmaline RE: I'll Face Myself - Tourmaline - Apr 22 2025 Between the quickly shrinking room to work, and Tourmaline beginning to look like a bedazzled pincushion, it is getting incredibly difficult to remain calm. It's already tight enough where every breath contributes to a timer, and that is separate from should it get any worse. RE: I'll Face Myself - Game Master Dark - Apr 23 2025 In the horrifically narrowed space, the sound of grinding might at first be a shock--but it was just the window, shuddering a little as the second pressure plate depressed, glowing golden, into the wall.
The final slot awaited, empty. Emuh waited somewhere beyond, silent; in fact, the whole little cave seemed to be holding its breath. @Tourmaline |
