Well, There Goes Our Best Furniture - Waker - May 13 2025

Many cycles might have passed since Centaurus' operations had resumed, yet the passage of time mattered little when few visited to brave the test sites diligent workers had expertly shaped into existence. Worlds came and went, its wonders and dangers undelved and unadmired. Meanwhile within the barracks, the Shapers spent their down hours engaging in their usual pastimes: when not drinking each other under the table, more often than not high stakes card games were played on top of it. Liberal swears flew through the rooms thick as smoke; of course, some contributed to the atmosphere with actual smoke, lighting up pipes a vice as welcome as any other.

Long ago, the presence of the chrysalises stored away amongst all this racket would've been more of a cause for concern. The more conscientious of the Shapers might've given them a tap every so often to see if the creatures dwelling within had at last mustered enough strength to meet their caretakers. But eventually that worry faded to indifference, and those sleeping Gembounds became nothing more than curious fixtures who received no more respect than any other piece of equipment. They served whatever purpose best suited them for the moment—a stool to reach high shelves, a side table next to someone's bed, or even a chair if all the best seats in the house were taken.

The everyday goings-on of Shaper life had settled into an old and familiar pattern. It was during what could've been considered an uneventful evening of chain-smoking and card-dealing that the sound of cracking stone emerged. Blanketed by the usual flung cusses and guffaws at lewd jokes, it likely would've gone unnoticed. But then the noise multiplied, all three of Fleas' unusual litter announcing they'd had enough of the established status quo.

A hoof kicked out from the chrysalis, shattering the front of it, leaving behind pieces scattered on the ground along with a leggy, dark creature pulling itself out. He snorted and grunted slightly as he lifted himself up onto shaky legs, his body hunched over as he took a moment to get used to everything he was thinking and feeling.

Slowly, he would turn his attention to his surroundings, ignoring the extraneous comments and voices around them. He didn't really care for the attention, for the sounds, and much preferred to just slip into the shadows quietly. But he noticed two others at his side and that got his attention more than anything.

Sitting rather awkwardly, he began to sniff at his two companions, head cocked to the side curiously.

Tap, tap, tap! went the sound of gem on gem, the littlest of them pushing with her skull until finally something gave. She was the last to emerge; the slowest, too, languidly worming her muzzle through the opening and huffing her first breath of air. And she was supposed to do more of that? Grimacing minuscule teeth, the little hybrid pulled back and clawed at the shards, tugging them into the drying chrysalis.

With an unceremonious flop, she'd squirmed her way to the floor. A defeated, tired sigh slowly breathed out of her as she eyed either sibling. What is this..? Baring her teeth again, the child lurched herself to her feet and started to shake off the residue of birth, fur spiking with how violently she rattled herself.

Better. The last bit was a single shake of her head and an insistent wiping down of her snout, her gaze uneasily lingering on the Shapers before them. Who were they? Who is she? So many things, and the child kept her ears flat, uncertain and damn near ready to bolt at the next sudden movement.

Whereas the rest entered their lives with a clear view of the strangeness and strangers surrounding them, this child's moments began in relative darkness. Were it not for the steady breaths pulsating the mass of rough-skinned flesh that'd spilled onto the floor from a chrysalis gleaming fluorescent green, likely there'd have been doubts whether this even was a living creature. A mop of tentacles with the shriveled hind legs of another beast welded onto it, the misshapen sight could've been an unfortunate failure at producing a life instead. But hidden beneath this horror, confused blinks took in the suckered curtains shrouding her head, unable to locate the source of the sounds pressing in on every side.

It was the snuffle against her mantle that caused her to finally stir out of the slumped position. Nose twitching in imitation of the sniffs heard and felt, she wiggled forward and butted against that which concealed her presence. First a snout poked out from between tendrils. Hesitance nearly withdrew it, but shy curiosity encouraged the malformed being to press onward. Five bright eyes emerged, their hue reminiscent of the stone she'd been birthed from. Pointed ears followed, this last thrust flopping the child into a sideways position, useless jackal limbs cast parallel to the ground.

She lay there shivering. Lack of comprehension and desperation for answers loosed a plaintive whine from sharp-toothed jaws.

"EYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!" came the first, crowing voice.

The Shaper present in the barracks at that moment--like all Shapers, essentially a black-furred fox-monster with glowing purple eyes--threw his arms wide in welcome. "YOU'RE FINALLY F-" (cough) "-FINALLY AWAKE! Good to see you. Cool. Okay. Uhh--HEY GUYS, GET IN HERE!"

The Shaper strode past the three new hatches, setting the mugs he'd been carrying onto a nearby countertop carved straight from the stone. Then he paced over, rolling his shoulders and hiking up the old camo pants he wore, tugging upwards on a workman's belt. "You kids got names yet?" he asked, grinning widely, far too many long, sharp teeth visible.

Behind him, two more Shapers trotted in, and had much the same reaction as the first.

"EYYYY!"
"Oh, no way, they HATCHED?! Shit, I thought we were just gonna have giant furniture in here for-"
"LANGUAGE, jeez! -Hey, you guys want some beers? I mean, welcome to the world! -But you want some beers?"

A couple more Shapers piled in, and soon there was a small crowd of them: cheerful fox-monster surrogate parents, grinning expectantly as they offered their newly hatched adult monster children alcohol.

One sibling hatched beside him and then another, and he was even more confused and interested than before. He nosed closer to the first creature, sniffing and snorting as he took in their form, noticing they were different than him in ways, but there was something, albeit small, that tied them together and he wasn't quiet sure what it was yet. But curiosity was the requisite for learning, so he was determined to find out what he could.

Before he could continue to sniff at the first creature, the second one also came out of its shell and he turned his attention to them instead, cocking his head to the side. They were... weird, and he had no clue how they moved, or even how their body worked at all. He wanted to push his nose into their form and learn more, taking a step to give some curious sniffs their way too.

Just like that though, sounds and voices washed over them and he jumped, looking like a startled horse as all four legs shot out stretch, his body tense as he quickly flicked his gaze over to the creatures that moved towards them the Shapers he found himself knowing somehow. He watched them closer, hesitating as they asked for a name and for a moment, he froze. Was he supposed to have a name? What was a name?

Though he was just seconds old, something in the back of his mind supplied him with that general knowledge, along with a single word which he quietly repeated outloud. Cernunnos.

Curiousity startled her even more. Fur lifting as she raised herself higher, Reid stared back at Cerunnos, then again to the beings that were already in the room—

Larger than her and loud, the Shaper moved past while Reid dropped her body, gaze flicking between every one of them. Language? ... Talking. Things clicked into place like she'd started to wake up, some distant look in her eye sharpening while she fixed her stance. They certainly were excited. Because of them? And does she have a name? Overwhelmed by all this newness, Reid's voice started before halting, waiting, frowning. What did her name sound like? Something like "Reid?" like 'read'ing a book, maybe, if she knew what that was.

Reid's tail flicked to and fro, that excitement simultaneously overwhelming yet welcoming. "I... want beers." Whatever a beers was, they were excited to give some to her, her curiosity winning over and chasing out any bit of fear left in her. "What's a beers?"

She could've asked that first, but damn, she was two seconds old. Everything was new. Of course she'd take something if it was given to her with such enthusiasm.

Long confinement within a chrysalis didn't come absent of consequences. Full physical maturity had been achieved, stone walls protecting the growing sleeper inside them, yet this sturdy barrier now proved guilty too for stunting the child in other respects. Eyes closed and surrounded by adamite, never had she encountered the stimuli necessary for sparking thought. Speech centers that should've been lit up by cycles worth of interaction were weak, atrophied to the point they could've belonged to a juvenile instead. As the deluge of Shaper chatter and cheer washed over her, she squirmed, tentacles slapping the ground in a struggle to adjust herself into a more comfortable pose. Words poured into the empty vessel of her mind, an overwhelming flood for someone absolutely clueless about the various concepts mentioned. Jaws clacked together as she flailed beneath this current, and stress released in the form of another meaningless keen.

She grasped for something, anything to keep her head above water. "A... wake. Waa... ake. Errr?"

Uncomprehending blinks greeted the offer of beer. Possession of a toddler's curiosity in a grown body drove Waker to drag herself closer to these strangers. While she hadn't been in this world for more than a mere minute at best, she'd be a fool to not recognize how different the Shapers were from her. Clothes and tools not understood at the moment to be separate from flesh and fur, a tentacle stretched toward the closest worn belt for an inquisitive tug.

So unusual. What was this with its dangling bits, and why did she lack it?

The shapers came in for handshakes, high-fives and even hugs, and sure enough, someone at the back grabbed the beers. They weren't in something like branded cans or even bottles; instead, cork-top flasks had been filled with home-brewed yeasty goodness, near barrels at the other end of the room. These were uncorked, swigged from, and handed off toward the new hatches.

Meanwhile the names were repeated, often crowed. "EYY! Cernunnos? Did I get that right? Good sh--stuff. Good stuff. Real impressive, like!" and "Read? --Sure, okay! Cool. Good name. Solid."

When Waker reached for a toolbelt, the Shaper laughed and tried to press an opened flask into the tentacle. "That's my tools, hey! They're no good for you. Not yet, but maybe you wanna learn?"

At this, the Shapers exchanged glances, then grinned at the three children. "I mean, you could go your own way," said one, with a shrug. "And you'll always be welcome back here!" said another. "BUT! If you wanna learn how to Shape, like us, we could teach you!" added a third.

Most of them were now standing around, cheerfully drinking from their flasks. Another was shuffling a deck of cards, glancing at the table--probably considering a game.

He quickly turned his attention to these ... shapers, his siblings now completely forgotten. What were beers? What were shapers? Tools? They seemed so insidious that he was unsure what he thought about them. He had so many questions but none were coming out of his maw just yet, mostly because he was just thinking about everything at once and wasn't sure how to express anything that he was thinking.

The first thing that caught his attention was the... did they call is beer? Yes, that. Carefully, he tilted it to the side and stuck his tongue into the liquid, only to pull his head back and grumble while shaking his head vigorously. What the hell was that? He scrunched his nose up as he glared at it like he had done something to wrong him, before dipping his head back down and lapping at it again, because that was the obvious line of choice. Of course the outcome was the same, though this time as he shook his head, he would turn his attention back to the shapers.

I want to be a.... shaper!. He demanded, though he really didn't know what he was demanding, but as far as he was concerned, they had it, therefore he wanted it to. He wanted to be like them after all.
