Something about Airplanes and Shooting Stars - Callista - Jul 30 2026
I used to think that the day would never come
I'd see the light in the shade of the morning sun
Callista stood under the ceiling of Orion and looked up, curious. She had never really considered the "stars" of Orion before, unable to even get close to them. She didn't have wings or anything and didn't exactly have the kind of magic to get her up there. But she knew they couldn't be stars...not when there was a ceiling.
As a kid, hatching here, she really had thought that there wasn't anything but the ceiling. And those stars were the only stars that existed. She knew better now, stories of Noctua, of the surface, but she had yet to go. It was so far, but she'd heard the descriptions - an endless beyond, glittering stars so distant it doesn't seem real.
These were not stars. Which meant they could get knocked down.
She reached down and grabbed a pebble off the ground, turning back towards the ceiling. Tossing the stone in her paw once, she gathered energy into her arm and then made to throw it as hard as she could. As the stone released, the energy surged from paw to rock and shot upwards towards one of the "stars". There was a distant fracturing sound as the stone hit one of the lights and then bounced off, to immediately hit the ceiling, scattering shards of rock down towards the ground.
She huffed. So close.

He'd been lurking again. Determined to learn what others did, what prey lingered in these places beyond the isle of Lacerta. As it was, it wasn't all that interesting. Lessers seemed only to get smaller and smaller, and not all that interesting (not that he'd actually seen many).
It was something shooting upwards that caught his eye, at first he thought it to be a flying meal. Yet it arched and seemed to come back down; something had launched it. Throwing rocks was a fun game, it meant he got to hit something. So, he padded in the direction he'd seen the be launched up from.
Another cat. He'd grown quite fond of them. So rather than considering other options, like mauling or smashing, instead he found a pebble of his own. Clutching it with his jaws as he moved closer to the stranger. Once within eyeshot, he tossed the pebble from his jaws and used his tail to smack it; as if serving for a tennis match.
Naturally, even though it was a good swing, a juvenile spinosaurus has no where near enough force to make it hit the ceiling. Instead it made a smooth arc in the air before clattering a little distance away.
The beast then turned to the cat-thing, awaiting their thoughts on the matter.

She had leaned down to grab another pebble, perhaps a lighter one to give her better aim, or to go faster. But then footsteps distracted her - something large was coming.
She straightened up as a a reptilian creature approached - young, by the gangly look of it, but still larger then most reptiles you would expect to see. She stared, tensing for a moment, wondering if it had come to attack or something. But then a flip of its head, a swing of its tail, and another pebble was soaring through the air.
She watched it with her eyes as it arced through the air above them, not coming anywhere close to the ceiling, but a respectable toss for someone without magic. A smile split her face as she reached up to grab another pebble. An idea was coming to her mind.
"I toss to you, you hit it?" Her thinking was that if she combined her force with his, maybe they could have enough to knock down a crystal! Callista had no idea how physics worked.

Brother tilted his head, one side, then the other. Looking not unlike a dog deciphering what their master had just asked of them.
He liked these cat-things, they always had the best games. And he was very much looking forward to smacking more rocks. Yet, perhaps in a rare sense of lucidity, or two wires in his brain briefly sparked together, or somewhere pigs were flying, who knows? But either way, for the first time in its life, the beast stopped to ask;
"Why?" He grunted, looking at his surrounds. "What was it hitting before?" Brother continues, craning his head to look up in the general direction that he believed Callista's first stone had been heading towards.
"How win game?" He huffed, all his words short and spoken like a demand; but his face remained open, quizzical even. It seemed he just sounds like that.

She followed his gaze up on instinct and tossed the stone lightly in the palm absentmindly. He didn't see where it was going? She'd thought that he'd maybe figured what she was doing, but it made it funnier to her that he's just seen her throwing rocks up and decided to join along. A smile broke her expression. "I was just throwing them. I can throw them hard with magic. And then if you hit it and add your strength, it could go higher maybe."
A game? Yeah, this could be a game! She hadn't really played games in a long time. Just a lot of hunting, drinking, reading, etc. etc. She stopped tossing the stone and gripped it in a paw, waiting for his go-ahead to throw. "We win if we can knock down one of the stars." She pointed up towards where the ceiling crystal twinkled under the lights. "We gotta work together."

The stars? Brother didn't know what those were. But, he did like knocking things down. He liked games. So, he padded back a few steps and readied himself.
He lowered his upper body for balance, spread his legs and raised his paddle-like tail; ready to swing.
It wasn't as if he understood the cat-things obsessions with magic (he'd met two and they both spoke of magic, therefore all cats had to like magic, obviously), but if it could make them both hit harder, make the stones go further; then maybe it was worth their time.
Brother gave a grunt. He was ready.

She smiled as the dinosaur readied himself, large tail at the ready. It was the perfect shape and size, too, to hit rocks towards ceilings. She wondered if it had been made with that intention in mind, or something similar. She gripped the rock in her paw and wound up, grinning at Brother as she did. "It's gonna come at you hard and fast!" As she swung, the energy released.
She tried not to go balls to the wall this time, as she was throwing it at someone instead of at the ceiling, just to see how well this was going to work. It still shot from her paw much harder then a rock should really be thrown all things considered, but it wasn't a bullet. Thankfully.

Brother eyed the rock, licking his teeth in his excitement. Oh! These cat-things truly always had the best games.
He kept his eye on the rock as it sailed, poised and ready. It came closer, and closer, and closer. Then, he swung. Unaware that it had already sailed past him and clattered somewhere behind him. The great beast looked upwards and squinted, as if trying to spot where he'd bat the rock to. His face scrunched when he eyed the stars, all exactly as they were before he'd swung.
A low grumble rumbled his dewlap, displeased apparently. He hadn't hit down the stars for the cat-thing.
With a great puff, he lowered himself again, tail raised. Eager to go again.
