autumn's monologue - Leon - Sep 03 2015

Post-dated to after the wedding - leaving details vague because its so far in the future, but I guess Leon is here looking for traces of Cancer for whatever reason.

Orion.

Sometimes, it was just a routine patrol through a familiar part of the cave; he'd look to a stone building and remember another time that he had passed by it, he'd remember hearing of it on the voices of others, he'd look for traces of trouble or interesting changes to the room like he would anywhere else. Other times, it was revisiting a darker part of his past. He'd look up at the glittering quartz ceiling and suddenly he would be sitting with Zetos again when all they had were each other. He would bathe himself in the crystal cold water of some of the small streams weaving through the room and he suddenly he'd taste the salty tears that had streamed down his face when he left Makyna. He would remember the pain and how he tried to numb himself to it.

Then he would remember the POP, and he'd remember Cancer, and then he would remember Amaria. His heart twisted, and then it felt angry; he'd blamed Cancer for everything. He wondered what the black leopard would say to him now if they crossed paths. It was a morbid curiosity that drove him through Orion. He kept to his duty, as he'd promised to Maji Walezi - this was just another routine patrol. But there was nothing stopping him from finding Cancer. In fact, maybe it was the only reason why he maintained his patrol instead of veering off to another, happier room.

And yet his guilty paws too him to the tower, where he knew he wouldn't find Cancer - no, this was where his memory of Amaria lived. He advanced on the tower, and there he saw the images of he and the young clouded leopard, far smaller than him at the time, curiously peering into its entrance. He heard their laughter and suddenly they plunged inside, but he knew that they were running up the stairs, racing each other to see who could get to the top first. And then Amaria tripped, and Leon accidentally hurt her pulling her back up. They'd tumble back and she'd land on him and he'd bang his head. But it was okay - neither of them were hurt too bad, and they carefully trudged up the rest of the stairs. He'd only wanted to protect her, but maybe she'd grown exhausted of his restless watchfulness.

Leon lingered at the arched entrance, peeking into the familiar darkness. He wasn't sure what compelled him to do so, but he called out, "Amaria?" as if that would somehow make her appear. His voice, wistful, sounded alien compared to the emotion that truly simmered inside of him. A sinking reminder - shame. Leon's shoulders dropped with a small sigh, expecting to hear nothing but the echo of his voice as it crawled up the tower and disappeared into the air above.

RE: autumn's monologue - Mercy - Sep 03 2015

He'd been laying silent some distance away, head down, trying not to irritate Vazi.

Hasira. He had to remember.

His name was Hasira, now.

The cub was larger than he had been when Vazi had found him--but smaller than he should be, malnourished and skinny, so that his head and his ears and eyes and paws were still too large for his bumbling body.

Next one.

He pulled another branch toward himself, his magic shimmering over it as he tried to sprout the berries on it into tiny new life that he could replant. A tiny tendril of green burst from the blue, uncoiling to meet light for the very first time, tiny leaves unfolding. Beast felt the glow of satisfaction in creating this life, or at least helping it along; he set the berries aside, to be placed within the soil later, and continued with the rest.

He repeated this cycle, constantly: harvest plants for the herbivores, eat what he could get himself, replant and regrow the rest. These berries were the leftovers from their last meal, and though Beast was still hungry, he felt it important to keep the cycle going. To replace what they had taken. It was exhausting, and more often than not he was struck or beaten for doing something wrong--taking too long, going to slow, while he ensured that the growth was healthy, for example. That it wasn't in any pain.

But the work still held a certain satisfaction to it. When he was growing the plants, it was he who held life in his power--and he was gentle with it, creating a world of love and care, a microcosm far different than his external existence of fear and pain. The blooming plants were bright and warm, soft against his paws--Hasira, nearby, was hard and cold.

A voice suddenly rang out, somewhere nearby, and Beast turned, large ears swivelling to listen. Fear gripped him at once--fear that it was another baby Gembound, another one Hasira would harm and twist and bully into his way of life.

Beast glanced at Hasira, eyes wide and body still, hoping that he hadn't heard.

VAZI HASIRA
"shattered innocence"

Near the tower, with an ever watchful eye on Beast, grazed a large stag. His mouth chomped and chewed at the grass which would be stored in his fore gut would store and digest the food which he would finish eating later. For now he had things to do or rather a creature to watch. The white thing was romping around collecting his berries and growing them back. It was irritating how long it took but essential for more growth that he "healed" the plants so the stag allowed it.

One ear was always twisted towards the cub to keep him in his sights. He may seem calm and collected now but he was a bomb waiting to go off. One wrong word or action and he would be over to the cub in an instant. His mind was on different things. With his touch of megalomania he wanted to grow his herd, to expand and begin to take some action. He would wait though, and plan. Always planning.

Patience.

He heard a new sound, both ears turned and his head lifted as his steel gray eyes gazed into the distance. He couldn't quite see the creature but a quick run over would change that. "Stay here." He grunted to the cub before following the sound.

He approached and soon saw that the cause was a large bear. Vazi's eyes narrowed as he slowed to a stop. This bear... He remembered him from that game that Wynry had initiated so long ago. Leon? Was it? He had been friendly before but there was nothing but cold aloofness in his eyes now. He hated him. Hated this bear for the carnivore that he was but he was not stupid. If he cried and yelled he would be acting just like the carnivores he hated. No. He would not treat this one like the three-headed canine who he'd caught red-pawed and this one was too large and old to retrain. He would have to deal with this another way. "What are you doing here, Leon?" He pawed the ground idly as he apathetically stared at the large creature. "Your kind do not belong here anymore." Antlers lifted higher to show the points, not exactly threatening just displaying what he had to offer if the bear should try anything.

He waited there just a few seconds more, wistful for some kind of answer. But at this point, he felt like he was just praying to some false, non-existent God. The bear's vigilance did pay off when something did in fact move, but it hadn't come from the tower. Leon found his short, stubby ears twitching and twisting back, turning his head just in time to witness the approach of another Gembound, the clacking of hooves in the dirt betraying his identity as a deer. The bear leaned back and narrowed his eyes slightly, trying to identify the approaching animal, but... for a second, he nearly didn't recognize him. He had grown, now hefty and muscular, sporting a rack of pointed and dangerous antlers atop his head. Disappointment lingered in his heart - this was not Amaria, but he should have known better to expect her to be here.

The stag spoke out, asking what he was doing here - and then his name, and his voice... yes, it was familiar. He remembered now! This was the deer that Arkrael had been sitting with, back during the truth or dare game. It had been so long ago, the memory nearly escaped him. "Vazi! I-" His voice cut off as the deer coldly advised him that he was no longer welcome in Orion, sending him into a flurry of confusion. Leon furrowed his brow and tilted his head, angling his body to face the deer. "What do you mean?" It was all he could do to question the stag, after all Leon couldn't comprehend any reason for why he wouldn't be welcome here in Orion.

Was it Cancer's doing? Was it because he belonged to Maji Walezi - had something transpired that Leon was not aware of? Unable to fathom why Vazi acted so coldly towards him, he simply waited patiently for an answer, uncertain of what to make of the situation.

Stay here, Vazi'd said, so Beast stayed, for now.

...For the most part.

He stood and turned to watch Vazi go, but before he had time for his curiosity and his fear of the stag to war within him, the stag had stopped.

It was up at the entrance to the tower, not too far distant; if he pricked up his rounded ears he could just hear two voices speaking. There was a huge, lumbering brown shape within the entrance to the tower, and Vazi seemed to be confronting it.

Beast glanced over his berries, and then up again, fear welling up within him; but by now that was nothing new, and he choked down the cold that seemed to flood down his throat, considering.

If Vazi was in trouble, he might need help. Beast wasn't sure what help he could be, but... but Vazi had almost certainly told him to "stay" as a matter of habit, and he wasn't sure he could get to the stag in time if the stranger outright attacked.

If he could just get a little closer, enough to listen more closely, to be able to run forward if there was a fight--another fight...

Gritting his fangs, the underfed, skinny white lion cub began to creep his way up the slope, not stalking, exactly, just walking with his head low and his ears back, afraid of Vazi's backlash should he spot him.

But it wouldn't be worth letting him get hurt. Would it?

VAZI HASIRA
"shattered innocence"

Vazi? The name brought a tinge of anger into his heart. His eyes narrowed ever so slightly and a hoof pawed the ground in irritation. "Hasira. My name is Hasira." His voice was just as cool and aloof as his expression. He would not be Vazi again until he found Wynry's killer and took revenge for the crimes committed.

When Leon questioned why he was not welcome anymore the stag's head lifted haughtily, eyes filled with self-righteousness stared down at the bear. "You are a carnivore and inherently evil. I do not want evil in my lands unless it is under control, which you are not." He tossed his head and pointed with his answers to the white creature picking berries. "He, is under control, and is welcome here so long as he works and earns his keep." His head straightened as he turned back to the bear.

"However," A smile appeared on his face now and he appeared almost pleasant but as Beast probably knew this could change within an instant. "If you wish to renounce the evil in your heart I will welcome you here with open arms. All you have to do is bow to me and become subservient to all herbivores. You would be required to live here for the rest of your days and become re-educated to proper carnivore etiquette." He spoke so simply, so plainly. As if what he was saying was perfectly reasonable.

RE: autumn's monologue - Leon - Sep 04 2015

The bear found himself slowly narrowing his eyes as the stag corrected him with a new name: Hasira. Something really wasn't adding up here. He didn't remember the deer being so cold when they had met the first time, especially considering Arkrael seemed to have held him in high regard. High enough to call him a friend. Still, he was willing to sit and listen to what the stag had to say... so when Vazi - Hasira - started to explain that he was evil because he was a carnivore, Leon's alarm bells finally began to go off. Something was definitely wrong here. His facial expression very obviously twisted into a frown as the deer went on talking some shit about his lands and how he didn't want evil in it, which Leon obviously was because he ate meat, then gestured with his head back to a creature that was slowly crawling towards them.

Leon traced his gesture to the tiny white lion that began to approach the pair of them. He'd never noticed the feline before, but his heart instantly went out to the creature who so closely resembled his fiance, who so obviously suffered the treacherous effects that this stag's control had over him. He was thin, the curvature of his ribs pressing against his ratty white hide, betraying his obviously undesirable diet. Was Vazi forcing him to eat plants instead of meat? The bear's frown grew, and it could only grow more when Vazi suggested that he 'renounce the evil in his heart'.

Bow to him, and be subservient to all the herbivores - no. No way in hell. Sure enough, Vazi's self righteous nonsense ignited a spark of anger inside of him, and he wondered in the back of his mind if the stag had something to do with Amaria - or worse, Cancer. Or even... "And what does Arkrael think about all this?" The bear asked slowly through gritted teeth, restraining himself from lashing out at the stag and his stupid ideals - at least, for now. He could forgive the deer for having a strange way of life because, apparently, Leon did have a choice not to involve himself - and he wouldn't. However, the mistreatment of the lion behind him was obvious, and then there was Arkrael... Leon would suspend judgment, for now.

They were tense.

Their voices were harsh, clipped, short. Beast felt that it could fall into anger or violence at any time; he hated violence. Feared it. It was the constant in his life, the thing that kept him shivering, the thing he'd do anything to avoid. But here was a problem: if Vazi knew he'd disobeyed, he'd likely lash out at him. It wouldn't be anything new, and it wouldn't be too terribly bad, he thought, but it'd be more than he wanted. More than he was ready for, always.

But if he didn't speak up, what if they broke into a fight? What if Vazi was hurt, or hurt this stranger?

No, he had to speak up, but what could he say? He couldn't just admit that he'd disobeyed for no reason. Beast's little heart raced as he tried to come up with an excuse--any excuse--for leaving his orders behind. Finally he gathered himself, his voice meek and cowed, and not in a forced way--rather, in the naturally subdued manner of the beaten servant, the oft-abused slave.

"Hasira, sir, can I go and plant the berries down by the throne...?"

He spoke in a voice barely louder than a whisper--a voice just loud enough to be heard, quaking in fear. If he was too quiet, Vazi would kick him, strike him with his antlers. But to speak too loudly was to be bold, and he was not allowed to be bold. He was filth, and he was meant to act like it, so he'd been told many times.

He kept his body low to the ground, his ears back, and his eyes on Vazi's legs. He'd learned this the hard way; if he made eye contact he came across as confident, and the stag's face and actions--and his gem--often then grew clouded (and crimson) with anger. But if he looked at the ground, well... then he wouldn't see the kicking hooves coming in time.

VAZI HASIRA
"shattered innocence"

The bear offered no answer for his perfectly reasonable offer. Pity. Did the bear not know that he was filthy, unclean, and bad? Perhaps not but he was too stupid to listen to reason. All of them were. You had to beat it into them. He would do it too, one day. They would all pay and then they would all learn proper manners and learn the error of their natures or die in the process. He didn't care which it was.

Then, he said her name. That demon, that she-beast, the betrayer, the distractor. His gem turned red in his anger and he stamped a hoof in the grass. "Do not speak of that she-demon in my presence! I do not care about her opinion! Just know that she will be mowed down like the rest of you! Just you wait..." He glared, sizing the bear up as if he would strike but no. He would not. To attack first would be stooping to their level. Besides, this bear was large... Far larger than his normal prey. He would wait until he had an army at his back. Then, he would find them all and deal with them.

"Hasira, sir, can I go and plant the berries down by the throne...?"

His ears pricked and then turned towards the meek sound in the grass. Without even turning his head he looked down at the cub in the grass. He hadn't seen the approach. Too quiet, too subtle had it been for his anger against the bear. Now though he could feel even more rage building. How dare he? How dare this insolent brat approach him when he was dealing with a visitor? When he had been told to stay put.

Without saying a word he turned swiftly and lashed out with his antlers, intending to open up a wound on the stupid cub. "Did I not tell you to 'stay there'? You insolent brat! Next time you disobey me like that I'll break your legs! Do you hear me?" He shouted angrily at the cub as he stood over the poor hapless thing with his back turned to the more dangerous one.

mature language :O

Leon hadn't expected such a violent response from the deer, but in all honesty he should have. He should've known something was up when the stag started talking about his hate boner for all things with sharp teeth, and he couldn't imagine that with such fervent rage he'd make an exception for Arkrael, even though when he'd first seen them together they looked perfectly happy in each others presences. Something had happened to sever that connection, and Vazi made that clear as he spewed vitriol about the wolf and started doing the crazy man ramble about how they'd all be mowed down, like... like grass. Typical herbivore talk. "Hey watch it stick-legs, I don't know what happened to turn you against literally half the cave but it's--!"

The lion had crawled up to Vazi and quietly asked him if he could plant the berries by the throne. Without any warning, the stag turned and wailed on the adolescent, cutting off Leon's words and causing him to flinch at the sight of the obviously painful attack. "Vazi, what the fuck!" He shouted, curling his lips back in a snarl. It was at that point the bear's protective, parental instinct had taken over. The image of the lion - it was like Makyna. It was like he was seeing Makyna slashed open and punished by the psychotic deer before him. That was enough for Leon to lose his grip on his emotions, anger rolling through him as the need to help - to save the poor starved little lion consumed him.

It was Vazi's mistake to turn his back on the bear - Leon lunged forward, cracking his jaws open as he summoned forth the heat from his chest. Taking a few bounds towards the deer, he attempted to spit a blazing mouthful of bile at the stag while reaching for his back side with his paws. If he could make contact, then Leon would try and immobilize the stag in his grip while using his fire to burn a hole in the back of the deer's skull - at this point, he didn't care about leaving Vazi alive. He needed to save the lion. Makyna.
