DOVEFEATHER
let the somebody calls you somebody says swim with the current and float away

Dovefeather sat at the edge of her pool, reflecting on her life so far. It had been a whole cycle, though how she knew that, it was impossible to say. The forest around her was dull, diluted here at the water, the noise of bugs and birds barely a hum in the cold air that surrounded the All Mother's Eyes. Her claws clacked against the edge of the pool, thoughts echoing murmurs of the soft sound of keratin on stone.

Since meeting Giggle, the feline had grown quieter. She was still very incredibly much a kitten, with ears too big for her head, and paws too huge for her feet, but something had sincerely changed in her eyes. Those pale golen eyes had grown dark, though perhaps it was from the lighting-- the angle-- an almost deep, inky grey, barely hinting the yellow inside of them.

Her paws stood apart, white, pristine pillars, as she cast her gaze into the pool, the bright lights of the cave's lanterns lighting up the still, silent water. Two dots on her forepaws, thick, blackening grey circles, stood face to face with one another, mirroring the way the eyes stood in front of her.

DOVEFEATHER
let the somebody calls you somebody says swim with the current and float away

It was time to see. With a deep breath, the kitten bowed her head, crouching down against the pool's lip. She held a certain tinge of fear, of respect, as she did so-- she had never touched the water before, never drank from it. She didn't think herself worthy-- perhaps she still wasn't. She pressed her maw closed, exhaling through her nose, letting her breath disturb the eyes.

"O All Mother, I am here to see as you see, to grow strong in not only vision but in ambition, to prove that I am worthy of your gifts."

The kitten's eyes closed, fluttering shut as she began to speak her prayer.

"Today, I ask a gift of you, in return for my faith. I will take whatever burdens you shall grant me, and shoulder my way to your path with honor and dignity. If I shall fail, shall I turn away from the way you show me, may you strike me down, All Mother. Please, allow me into your Eyes, allow me to See true."

"Praise to you, All Mother, and may I become blessed by Your Grace."

The kitten rose.

"Blessed be, All Mother, O."

The kitten took a step forward, slipping into the pool of water.

The water is at first cool to the touch. Gentle ripples reach out from the cat's paws as she moves in, expanding across the surface and dissipating at its edges. The temperature does not change - in fact, nothing of particular significance happens upon her first few steps into the pool. One would think of the immersion as rather uneventful, save for just the fleeting glimpse of a reflection in its surface - the movement of something dark fluttering just out of sight but towards the center of the pool, like a bird. It is sudden and barely noticeable, gone the instant one would turn their head to look at it. There is no bird above.

DOVEFEATHER

The water was cold-- icy, sharp. She noticed it immediately and found the shock almost paralyzing, the way it hit her right in the chest. Her curled fur did nothing to keep out the icy chill, instead the water seemed to greedily spiral up into her coat, down to the roots. The kitten held her breath, making sure not to take any of the Eyes' water, not to breath or drink a single drop, jaw clenched tight despite her urge to gasp and mewl and yowl.

(She was a cat. Water was not really something she instinctively enjoyed.)

She cringed, watching her reflection but for a moment, and that was when the Eyes Showed her something. She was sure of it-- a True Sight, for the first time. It was overwhelming yet brief, sharp and poignant. A bird... A bird? She looked up, out of instinct, and saw nothing-- more importantly, she heard nothing. Not a flutter of wings... Nothing.

The kitten, having enough of the water for the time being, crawled out of the eyes with sheathed clawed, making sure that she didn't scratch up the Eyes any.

"O All Mother, thank you for your blessing, O."

She mewled shortly, dipping her head at the pool, standing there with a shivering, soaking wet coat. She supposed that now she was supposed to do a proper Seeing, describing what she saw, and why... But instead, she simply sat down, and for a great moment, considered the pools.

DOVEFEATHER

The kitten quietly laid down, kneeling by the pool of water, shivering as water dripped off of her body and returned the water. She did not do anything to disturb the water more, simply allowing her body to dry in the warm air of Eridanus, allowing the droplets to return to their home. She would not, could not, take from the Eyes of the All Mother-- it simply wasn't right.

In the meanwhile, she considered what all of this meant. Part of her wanted to say aloud her ideas, but something felt wrong about sharing that intimate moment with the world. No, it was meant to be something that only she had seen, only for her eyes-- a private conversation between her and the All Mother. Had it been a bird? She was willing to consider that it had been something else, even though her mind wanted it to be a dove.

It didn't seem to make sense. She already had her sign, unless this was confirmation of her true name, of her calling. She shoo her head, small droplets of water coming off her whisker and dancing down into the pool. She put her chin on her paws, letting out a soft sigh, and slowly, the kitten drifted off to sleep, considering what the Eyes had shown her.
