Grow, Bloom, Thrive - Cayenne - Nov 12 2015

(Selfy Thread)

She had a basket next to her, one full of rich loamy earth from Eridanus, and she was standing before the favorite area of the cave deer where they liked to stand and gather when they thought that there was no one around.

Originally Cayenne wanted to practice her magic for her garden. She had yet to make the fence for it, and she had debated for a while for whether or not she should make the fence first before practicing. But whether or not she had it, she doubted she could make anything quickly and tall enough to keep out the nearby cave deer by herself. And besides, she just wanted to practice. So what better way to practice than to scatter a thin layer of good earth and make grass and some scattered flowers here and there? It wouldn't take long to cover the ground and the scorch marks either, and the grass would help break up the hard cold ground underneath.

Tenn was off in Eridanus on another trip for earth, and would be back soon. She wanted to get this started so she could show him when he got back. She smiled. He would like it for sure. Would he hug her again? She hoped so.

She moved around, spreading the earth from the basket in a thin layer as evenly as she could, scattering it with the wave of her hand. She would turn this empty scarred place into a peaceful and pretty one, give it a metamorphoses worth his hug.

After a significant area had been covered enough that she couldn't see the pale, derelict color it had before, she took some of the very very small grass seeds in a big handful from her satchel and spread them around, careful to keep it just on the area with the darker earth. She didn't want the grass to have some unhealthy patches, and she certainly didn't want to get the cave deer sick with weak growth.

Then, after she was done, she took a couple of the Dormire flower seeds and carefully placed them in one spot after another, smiling as she did so. This was the plant she discovered, she named, she had memories with. Coming to the clearing full of these beautiful white flowers with Amalthea, learning how to write the name of it with Tenn....she really liked this flower, and she was glad she would have the opportunity to see them every day.

Then, once she was finished with all of that, she took a deep breath and picked one very small area, lifted her hand with her sharp stone finger to reside over the earth. Grow, please, come to life for me, she whispered to the dormant seeds.

They answered, and the small area under her hand sprouted with healthy, vibrant life, with one perfect Dormire flower right in the middle, budding like a beautiful child greeting the world, one petal unfurling at a time with a delicacy only a flower could have. Cayenne laughed and grinned, giving the flower a kiss before moving onto the next small area.

Again she raised her hand over the area, and even though the growth wasn't as magnificent as the last, grass still came to her beck and call, along with one of the flowers she had scattered. It was starting to look really lovely, with the grass curling around her toes, tickling her legs and the cuts and scabs there.

Maybe this was what Khloros had meant by many friends, she thought. Her plants felt like they were hers, like they belonged to her, but not because she had called them to life, but rather that she felt the need to protect the life she created. She would make sure that they had all the nutrients they needed to grow, that they wouldn't fall sick, or completely eaten away by creatures that might come across them.

She made this promise to the grass and the flowers as she made her way to the next area.

She felt both tired and powerful at the same time as the grass and the flowers came to live, and decided to place more than just the Dormire flowers. She scattered some river weeds she had picked up near the lakes of Eridanus and some tall grass weeds that looked like pretty feathers here and there, and some clover seeds that she had painstakingly taken from each clover flower. Once they started, they would look lovely amongst the grass, and the cave deer would really like it, she thought.

Again she raised her hand, and again all the seeds she scattered came to her call. She was almost done with this section of earth that she'd settled, and would probably have to scatter the second and last basket she had to create a bigger plain of grass.

She smiled. Tenn would be thrilled when he came back.

She would make this derelict place beautiful, she promised. Cayenne scattered more earth and more grass seeds and more flowers, patiently moving her way around the clearing, humming and smiling to herself. Maybe when she was done she would take a quick nap in the new grass. She stifled a yawn at the thought, her fangs flashing in the colorful light of the nearby crystals.

This time when she scattered more seeds and coaxed them to life, she stumbled in the casting, losing focus as a huge wave of exhaustion hit her. Her vision wavered and everything swam. She knew she was tired, but it hit her all of a sudden like a ton of bricks.

Cayenne sat down quickly, holding her head. She knew that when she made the plants grow from her skin, they leeched her energy from her blood, but she didn't know that magic sapped her energy too.

"Well, now you know, Yenna," She muttered to herself, letting herself close her eyes for a while.

Her eyes flickered open, her bones weary. What a weird feeling this was, to be so tired after what amounted to nothing more physical than standing around and pointing. She only had a little bit more to do, so she stood back up again and raised her hand, but as she did so, her focus was ruined and shot as everything blacked out.

She woke up again in the middle of the grass. Cayenne looked at a four leaf clover right next to her with a little budding flower right next to it and fluttered a weak smile, touching it gently. She sighed deeply, listening to a light breeze come through the cave room and rustle the new grass.

This was peaceful. Maybe she should just stay here a while.

She woke up again a little bit later, feeling groggy and still sleepy, and she yawned, rubbing her eye with the back of her hand. She felt a little bit better, though her limbs still felt weak and drained. With patience for her state, she slowly rose, looking over her work, lost in the small circle of tall grass and flowers. She felt powerful and drained and sleepily happy.

Perhaps, now that she had slept a while, she could attempt something else. Maybe she could start the fence with the pile of thick twigs and thin, rope-like vines over there. She made her way over to this comfortable little corner where she would start her herb garden, picked up a twig and held it in the crook of her arm, frowning. How was she-? The vine was the slightest bit stiff, and pulling the end into a knot only made the whole thing break off, and she frowned after a few minutes of this out of frustration. She juggled with the twig and the vine to try and tie it with both hands, but when the twig fell on her foot and made her make a grunt of pain, she threw the vine a short distance and growled at it all.

Dangit, if she wasn't so tired she would just tell the vine to do her bidding! Tying it was just ridiculous, it didn't want to be tied! If she had something fresher, maybe, but this stuff was already a day old.

She wanted to at least get started on this before Tenn got back. Being frustrated about it wouldn't get anything done, she told herself. So she squared her shoulders and walked away from the stupid vines and the fence.

With a huff, she set off to search for something else to tie the fence together with, contemplating the construction as her eyes moved over nooks and crannies of the cave. Perhaps if she struck the twig into the ground, she wouldn't have to juggle with it. Then she could have a twig going horizontal to the next one, to guard against anything coming to the fence, as it would be stronger than simple rope or vines...but she didn't want to juggle with that, holding it up and tying it at the same time, so she could just stick the next twig in the ground, and tie one end and then other.

She searched absentmindedly now, lost in her problem solving. But how would the rope keep the twig upright without slipping from the weight? She didn't want to make a wall of them, that would require too many twigs, so maybe she could cut a grove into the upright twig with her sharp stone finger for the twig to rest in while she tied it.

She sighed. That would require a lot of work.

She saw a glimpse of something long and thin along the floor trailing along into the dark and did a double-take, almost disregarding it and missing it against the bright crystal nearby that washed it out the part she could see into one flat color. She went over to it, following the trail of what looked to be twine, and whooped with laughter when she saw a whole coil just sitting there, discarded. She picked it up and brought it back to the pile of twigs, her spirits in much higher condition.

She walked slowly back to the area with the twigs with the coil of twine around her shoulder, humming tunelessly as she went. When she made it back, she looked at the discarded vine and wondered if she really could make it move to her will.

She raised her hand and focused, but nothing happened. Her finger failed to have its customary flash and its drain of energy so, she mused, maybe it was because the vines were dead? She shrugged. It was worth a try.

She placed down the twine on the ground and got to work setting up the twigs, cutting a notch in the thin wood with her sharp finger, slowly, humming along as she did so.

Would Tenn hum along with her, if he was here? She wondered. He didn't have Amalthea's lovely voice, but his was nice and deep, richer sounding than Cayenne's raspy one.

Time passed slowly as she worked, and she felt stronger, less likely to black out again as she just stood and worked with her hands. Stick two twigs in the soil, cut the grooves, both at the same height, place the third horizontal twig that would serve as a bar on her shoulder to rest while she tied it in place with the piece of twine she cut, then the same with the only groove, making sure to leave half for the next bar. Over and over she worked, letting her hands work while her mind wandered.

After a good long while, she stood back from the fence and nodded, satisfied. Then she looked over at the cave deer off in a far corner and her face soured. Those giants wouldn't care for a one foot tall fence. She just shook her head and made a note that she would replace the fence with a magnificently, ridiculously tall hedge later on when she grew up. One with thorns. And a little door for her that she could wave open with her magic, and the plants would just open, only for her, like a soft curtain.

That'd show those annoyingly tall giants.

She hopped over the fence, satisfied that it held when she put her weight on it to jump over it, and started spreading the soil from the second basket she had placed with the rest of her supplies. At least she got to start her garden.

She took seeds carefully from her pack, placing them in soft cups of earth in rows, remembering where each one was supposed to go and which one was which. Putting the row of Tamusen bushes next to the plant that released a pollen that slowed the heart rate would probably be bad if she had to grab a lot of the red leaves over and over again. No, that one would go in the far corner, surrounded by a line of rocks.

Once a row was planted, she raised her hand and asked them all to come to life, watching them all take root and start sprouting budding red leaves. She grinned. This was definitely her favorite spell.
