sleeping sickness - Gracie - May 20 2015

[this thread is back dated to May 16th, 2 days before light returns to the cave]

A large boulder of a stone sat for nearly a month in an exact plot of soil, just long enough that the vegetation of Eridanus had started to crawl up it's smoothed sides. It wasn't an easy sight to miss, the pink chrysalis was very out of place given the green of it's surroundings. Gemless birds swooped down occasionally to roost on the diamond, some feeling brave enough to peck at the hollowed stone where they were unanswered by the life form within. Their efforts to disturb the neonate continued everyday, growing deviously into throwing pebbles off the pink diamond. Little rocks began to surround the chrysalis, a bit comically. It now looked like the gem womb was rested on a bed of pebbles; like a bird's egg in a nest.

Gracie was a heavy sleeper, not once did the outside world wake her during her slumber. It was something else entirely that woke the panda cub. A striking jolt inside her chest had the tiny female flailing around inside her chrysalis, the pink diamond began to wobble back and forth becoming uprooted from it's place in the dirt. It tipped over anticlimactically, but it still bought the attention of the birds who had restlessly been disturbing the chrysalis. They twittered and cheeped an encouragement to the girl, she didn't know what all the ruckus was however and her struggles intensified.

Finally the diamond enclosure gave way, not from her weak physical struggles, but magic from the matching gem attached to her chest had a lot to do with it. It was time to live! Gracie poked her head out from the top of her shattering chrysalis and blinked her gorgeous purple eyes at the dark abyss that was her new life... and yawned a mighty yawn. A bird chirped once before falling silent, all eyes were staring at the "newborn" gembound, watching and waiting to see what she would do next. She started to giggle, alarmed by the noise that rose from her throat.

"shattered innocence"

Having wandered away from Wynry by accident the little fawn at first was extremely nervous but then decided that the lamb would be fine. There was no danger in these caves, it was full of friends! Still, being away from his closest friend left an ache in his heart that wouldn't easily be filled without the lamb's companionship... However, there was an ache in his belly that wouldn't easily be filled without sustenance. Glancing back the way he had come then at the glorious room of greens his belly finally won out.

The little fawn trotted forwards and began sampling all of the different types of plants. There were so many different kinds from ferns to lichens! The fawn was going mad with all the different types of delicious flavors! It was absolutely wonderful! The little fawn found his favorite plan though, a bit of clover that he thoroughly enjoyed. His tail flicked back and forth happily as he munched on the plant and listened to the birds chirping and playing overhead. It was a very serene moment and for a brief second he forgot his duties in the sheer moment of bliss that he felt.

It was until he heard the sound of cracking, similar to that of when Wynry hatched, that he snapped back to reality. What was that? Following his ears he approached a little area overgrown with plants that housed a large pink stone. A stone that was almost completely shattered by the creature within. A large black and white creature with beautiful purple eyes. Vazi didn't know what sort of creature it was but it was far different than anything he had ever seen before.

"Greetings." He approached and reached forward to touch her nose with his own in greeting, welcoming her to the world. "I am Vazi. Do you know who you are?"

RE: sleeping sickness - Gracie - May 25 2015

Gracie's eyes were glazed from her slumber and the surroundings were darker than they should have been because of it. Slightly blinded by the darkness her heart began to race with apprehension. The noise of someone approaching only made the frantic beating increase. The panda cub stifled a yelp when a wet nose touched her own, she had not seen him coming at all.

His voice was kind and soothing, however, foreign and she stared at him in confusion. It was short lived. The words rang over and over in her head until, click, they started to make sense. Trying to use her own voice, Gracie inhaled and opened her stubby maw to try and mimic his speech. Only gravelly growls escaped, and she started to giggle at a particularly high pitched one. "Grrrrr graaaaa," she squealed in delight, again more uncontrollable laughter. She was laughing too hard to attempt to say her own name again.

Clumsily, the panda tried to step out of her broken chrysalis but tripped on the edge and careened forward in a summersault right towards her company in a black and white wrecking ball of fur.

The little deer boy jumped back slightly, startled by her sudden yelp of alarm. Well, he supposed it was warranted. He had just come out of nowhere and touched noses with her. It was just that with Wynry's hatching he had did the same and the little lamb had reciprocated it without complaint. He supposed that everyone was different though. He was slowly finding that out through life.

The little cub attempted to answer his words, or he assumed she was trying to answer as she made various sounds with her mouth. He leaned his head forward in an attempt to try to understand her better. "Graaa? Graaaayyy?" He tried to encourage her. "Go on. You can do it." He said encouragingly. At her laughter he couldn't help but give a little smile. She was so excited! The day of hatching was a very special one! One that always elicited joy from the one that was hatching and the ones who watched too!

He even began laughing himself which was why he almost didn't move out of the way in time of the panda coming straight towards him. "Whoa!" He cried, leaping nimbly to the side. He would have tried to stop her but with her large size it would probably end up knocking him off his feet. He was still rather new himself and his legs were rather spindly still. Instead he went to her afterwards, asking with concern, "Are you alright?"

RE: sleeping sickness - Gracie - May 28 2015

She managed to roll a few times before the momentum of her fall faulted and Gracie rested in an awkward position. Her hind paws were on either side of her head, upside down and folded up was her body. Puffing, she tried to straighten her back out by throwing her rump down against the ground but it took a few times before she was parallel with the world again. Rolling over, Gracie was upright but still laying: legs sprawled out and belly against the cool dirt. She was dizzy and didn't even think to try and stand just yet. Her muted laugh returned, the fall had scared her momentarily. "MM! MM!" she hummed, nodding dramatically to let her new friend know she was okay.

Gracie wanted to try her name again, this time her brow furrowed in concentration. "Gra... Gracie!" she cried out, giddy with relief that her voice did in fact work.

One success! Gracie grinned and pulled her legs inward. She wanted to go for the next goal now, walking. Purple eyes gleamed with excitement and her little heart began to race once more. Looking to Vazi, making sure she wouldn't go flying into him once again, the cub tried her luck at rising up to all fours.

It was difficult getting them all to move at the same time, her limbs seemed to have a mind of their own. Four separate minds, not even on the same page. Being balled up in her pink diamond womb for so long, her legs were still awfully cramped up and resisted the panda's every attempt. Forcefully, and with every muscle in her weak body, Gracie commanded all paws beneath her to stand up... and succeeded! For a few seconds until her legs began to wobble and shake. "Ayeee!" her howl was pitiful as she fell forward, head feeling too heavy and big for her body. The klutz fell face first into the dirt with a small cloud of dust rising around her.

Oh deer! It looked like she had fallen hard. Was she alright? The little fawn trotted over to her only to have the little panda cub sit up and give him a confirmation --at least he thought it was a confirmation-- that she was alright. That laugh sure sounded promising! So, the little fawn laughed as well. "You sure took a tumble! I'm glad you're alright, though." The little one said as he smiled at her. The smile only faded when the panda furrowed her brow, his head tilted to the side in a questioning gesture. "What's wrong?" He asked curiously before he received his answer. Oh! She'd gotten her name! "Gracie." He nodded his head. That was a pretty name, like "grace" but with an "ie". Ironically she seemed anything but graceful right now but that was alright. Perhaps when she grew older she would live up to her name a bit better.

Happy that she was happy the smile returned. "Come on! You should try getting up again! You can do it!" The little panda again tried to walk with her legs but it just seemed like today wasn't her day. Gracie seemed to get them under control for a split second before tumbling again, this time she landed on her face. Oh no! The fawn bounded over to her and knelt at her side. His large eyes flashed with worry as did the gem at his chest, turning a green very briefly before returning to its clear color. "Gracie, are you alright?" The previous fall had been hard but this one looked to be distinctly more damaging, he hoped she was alright.

RE: sleeping sickness - Gracie - May 29 2015

The panda cub's name was indeed a singing example of irony. Gracie lifted her head up from the dirt and sputtered a few times, flicking her tongue against her teeth to try and remove some dirt. Her bottom lip quivered and it would seem Gracie would soon start crying. But, surprisingly, the tears didn't come. The second fall wasn't as scary as the first, the dirt in her mouth was the worse part. It tasted terrible! And her stomach grumbled painfully at the tease of matter entering her mouth that wasn't food. The terrified look of horror and humiliation washed away, and a slight grin returned when she saw Vazi didn't leave yet.

The little deer had been so encouraging to her for standing and walking, Gracie was a bit sad she let him down. But there was always second chances right? "I okay," she reaffirmed her wellbeing before trying to stand for round two. This time with less force and maybe a bit more grace... Paws spaced out underneath her a bit awkwardly, again, but more stable this time around. She stood! No wobble at all this time, and she resisted whooping as it might unsteady her. "I DID IT!" she yelled, too loud. The excitement almost knocked herself over, but she caught the teeter carefully and began taking her first steps. Gracie was nearly hyperventilating with excitement. Awesome! Walking was awesome!

It seemed that the panda cub was made of tough stuff for she sat up and seemed to be perfectly okay. The fawn breathed a sigh of relief before he rose to his hooves. It looked like she was about to cry for a split second but instead of bursting into tears the cub straightened up and gave a grin. Vazi returned her smile and nudged her gently with his head. "Come on, once more! You have to learn to walk at some point!" He said cheerfully with a light teasing tone to his voice.

Vazi watched as she once more rose to her paws and this time with no wobbling! Yay! The little cub was finally learning! He was excited for her and in his excitement he gave a whoop of joy. It wasn't him that was walking but with how he'd been with her since the beginning he felt great excitement. When she failed it struck him as particularly bad and when she succeeded it made him extra happy!

Now it was time for more of a challenge. The little deer took a few bounding steps away from her and stopped a few feet away. He turned to her and pawed a hoof on the ground as he said, "Come on! Try to walk to me, Gracie!" He called, voice still patient and encouraging as he waited to see what all she could do.

RE: sleeping sickness - Gracie - Jun 08 2015

Gracie gasped as her friend darted off and for a split second she thought for sure he was going to leave her there all alone in the dark world. Relief was imminent once the deer friend stopped and turned around. Squinting her purple eyes she tried to see him better, but with no prevail. The panda cub wasn't completely blind, she could see better with every passing moment since she fell from her chrysalis. But the lighting was screwy, shadows tilted and moved about as creatures passed in front of the limited light sources. It was eerie, and Gracie then decided she didn't want to be alone at all… perhaps, ever.

"Otay!" she puttered, pink tongue flashing momentarily between sharp canines to lick at her nose. Watching her two front paws like a drunkard leaving a bar, Gracie moved them stiffly forward putting way too much thought into the movements. If someone would push her maybe she'd fall into step more naturally. It looked like she was a broken, malfunctioning toy the way she stumbled forward. Finally reaching Vazi, she panted a yawn. Moving was tiring! And her stomach grumbled so.

"Why grrrrr?" she imitated the noise she imagined her stomach was making, pointing a paw towards her belly. A mistake, teetering the girl nearly fell forward again but corrected herself quickly and fell back onto her rump. A light laugh at her lips.

The little panda seemed to be moving slowly and steadily towards him. Her technique was off and a little bad... but hey, whatever got her going would work just fine! He stomped his hooves in a sort of cheer as she came closer and closer and finally made it. "Yay! You did it!" He cheered, sounding decidedly happy for her success. He was glad that she was doing so well and not just giving up after making her first failed attempts. Vazi was glad that he had been around too. What would she have done if he hadn't come by? Perhaps she'd still be lying on the ground without someone to cheer her on.

Vazi's ears twitched towards Gracie when he heard her stomach let out a rumble. When she questioned what it was the deer gave out a little laugh. "That is your stomach talking to you. It is saying 'I am hungry!'! But stomachs cannot talk like us so they must go 'grrrrr'! When he said "grrr" the young deer poked his head in front of Gracie's and made a "ferocious" face as if he was imitating her growling belly. It was all in good fun though and he was trying to make the panda laugh by being silly.

After he lifted his head back up the red deer looked around for something to feed the bear and saw a berry bush full of delicious blueberries. He trotted over to it and looked back at Gracie. "Come! I have found you something to eat." He called before turning to the bush and taking a mouthful of leaves and berries in his mouth so show her what he meant.
